Keys to the Game: Seahawks @ Titans

Limit the Run.
Shawn Alexander leads the NFL with 1496 yards and the Seahawks are
third in the league in rushing. Though he's racked up the most yardage
on cream puffs like that Niners, Rams and Cards, the Titans will need
to overachieve on Sunday if they are going to have a chance to keep him
from his 10th 100-yard game of the season. Much of the effort will need
to come from DT Albert Haynesworth who is the main cog in the defensive
machine. When he is being disruptive, the Titans defense plays up a
notch. This could be a key game for Brad Kassell in run support who
needs a big effort. If a case of the tackling whiffs return, it will be
a long day.
Avoid the Burn.
The Seahawks have a balanced offense. Despite having one of the best
running games in the league, they are 13th in the league with the
passing game. They have five receivers with over 350 yards and two,
Bobby Engram and Joe Jurevicius with over 600. With the Titans safeties
giving extra attention to the run, Pacman Jones and Reynaldo Hill will
have to play well and avoid the deep pass off of play-action. Seahawks
QB Matt Hasselbeck had four touchdown passes last Sunday and has put
together another solid season with a 92.7 passer rating. KVB and
company will need to keep the pressure on in order for the young guns
at CB to have a chance.
Generate Offense. The
woes of the Titans offense continued last Sunday and the unit has not
scored a touchdown in nine quarters. In order to keep the ball away
from Alexander the Great, the Titans must execute their short passing
game and establish the run. Seattle is 10th in the league in rushing
defense but this number may be somewhat skewed as they've faced few top
runners this season. The Giants Tiki Barber put up 151 yards on them
though they did hold the Texans Dominick Davis to 40 yards. Regardless,
the Titans haven't done much since the 21-point outbreak against the
Niners who Seattle beat 41-3 last Sunday. With the limited weapons in
the passing game, Brown will need his best effort of the season on
Sunday for the Titans to stay in this one.
Special Special Teams.
Pacman Jones brought one to the house last Sunday and the Titans will
need everything special teams can give them again this week. With the
offense sputtering, a shorter field always helps. The Seahawks have
allowed one kickoff return for a touchdown and averages 8.3 yards per
punt return. With scoring opportunities likely to be minimal, Rob
Bironas will need a take advantage of every opportunity. Craig Hentrich
had a monster punt last week and will need to help keep the Seahawks
pinned back and make them drive a long field. If the Titans are going
to have a shot in this one, they need to make something special happen
on punt coverage which means swarming Seahawk punt returner and
ex-Vandy player DB Jimmy Williams who has put two on the turf so far
this season but will want to show especially well in Nashville.
