View Full Version : Eddie George/ Jerome Bettis
Great article in today's Tennessean on the similar situations Eddie George and Jerome Bettis were in a couple of years ago. Both were faced with reduced roles on their respective teams. Jerome accepted the role and pay cut, remained with the Steelers and will play in the Super Bowl tomorrow. Eddie asked to be released, spent a horrible year in Dallas last year and is now a man without a team, but not officially retired. The ironic thing is that they have the same agent, Lamont Smith.
I'm not saying that if Eddie was still here, we'd be in the Super Bowl, but it would have been nice to see him go out a Titan.

SEC 330 BIPOLAR 02-05-2006, 01:29 AM Oh...no doubt. I've been well aware of the agent angle here. Another poster characterized this as a "tale of two backs"... it is just another in a long line a tragedies for the Titans.
A tragic hero is an honorable protagonist with a tragic flaw, also known as fatal flaw, which eventually leads to his demise. The concept of the tragic hero was created in ancient Greek tragedy and defined by Aristotle. An Aristotelian tragic hero must have four characteristics: goodness, superiority - such as in terms of politics, reputation, or perceived wisdom, a tragic flaw, and a realization of both his flaw and his inevitable demise. Usually, the realization of fatal flaw results in catharsis or epiphany. The tragic flaw is sometimes referred to as an Achilles' heel after the single fatal flaw of the Greek warrior Achilles.
It's a bit ironic when you think about EG in a boot.
Also what comes to mind is:

Many players have learned from the two different paths of Eddie George and Jerome Bettis. What they have learned is that sometimes it pays to take less money to stay with a team you know and not test the free agent market.
Floyd has faith in Tank and recognizes that he is a smart player, he knows the system and he has potential. It is wiser to keep a guy that you know has the potential to make plays than to spend a large amount of money on a new free agent who you hope to make a difference. Remember, the Titans have a horrible record when it comes to signing free agents.
Tank wants to stay in Tennessee. He knows the team, he knows the system, he has made lots of close friends on the team and in the city and he enjoys Nashville. Besides, it's best to stay where you started and at least go into free agency with a strong season behind you.
I stole nothing. I only accepted what you offered.
I even cited you anonymously.
Here is your full public credit.

RollTide 02-07-2006, 10:28 AM The titans have sucked royally the last 2 years. What benefit would eddie have being the short yardage back on a horrible team? Bettis is getting all this love mainly because his team has been good. Eddie wouldn't have any of that. He would just be this old, slow back playing out the rest of his career on one of the worst teams in the nfl.
SEC 330 BIPOLAR 02-07-2006, 11:50 AM I love Eddie. Even though I was sad to see him go:sad2:I was also glad.

Chris Brown did a far better job in 2004 tha EG could have ever hoped to.:winker:

Chris Brown did a far better job? Yeah, when he wasn't on IR. Has he ever played a full season without missing a game due to injury? No. At least Eddie was reliable and never missed a game.
Also, Eddie is still in shape, unlike the swole up Bus.:hmm:
(I'm fighting every urge in me to post something smarmy and totally inappropriate)
Soxcat 02-07-2006, 01:04 PM Good point. Eddie might have had close to the same number of yards Brown had playing all 16 games and getting twice the carries.
EG would not of been better than Antowain Smith who averaged 3.7 yards per carry in 2004.
SEC 330 BIPOLAR 02-07-2006, 05:53 PM Keebler girl, have you been sticking your head in the oven again?
http://sports.sportscrew.com/images/football/nfl/allsport/titans/brown_chris2.jpg
^ 11 games started, 220 rushing attempts for 1067 yards and a 4.9yd average.
http://bengals.enquirer.com/img/photos/2000/10/100900georgefumble.jpg
16 games started, 312 rushing attempts for 1031 yards and a 3.3yd average.
Now, it really sucks that Brown was injured like that that year. He missed the whole back end of the season. Of all those starts EG made what percentage of them was he 100% ? Whatever number you come up with may sound favorable but keep in mind he had a relatively long career for a RB. Yes, Chris Brown's career by comparison has been a short one, and yes he has had injury issues but the simple fact remains that "first down Brown" did more on the ground in eleven starts in 2004 than Eddie George did in 16 in 2003. EG also had a better team around him IMHO.
"Has he ever played a full season without missing a game due to injury?"
Do you look at the rest of the league?
Backs who missed starts in 2005...
# 39 Willie Parker
# 26 DeShaun Foster
# 38 Mike Anderson
# 32 Edgerrin James
They're others but these names are just the most impressive.
But true, these backs only missed a game or two, not almost 1/3 of the entire schedule. I see your point. The vast majority of superior RB's start and play 16 games. Chris Brown is and can be a great change up man when he's not busy getting dinged and licking his wounds. It's long been my contention that we need a 1200 yard back...this class includes...
Shaun Alexander
Tiki Barber
Larry Johnson
Clinton Portis
Edgerrin James
LaDainian Tomlinson
Rudi Johnson
Warrick Dunn
Thomas Jones
Willis McGahee
Reuben Droughns
Willie Parker
These guys make their starts...but until we have the draft capital, we must worry about greater needs such as QB, OT/OG, LB, S/SS, ... RB is like #5 need to me...not worthy of a first day pick, Henry/Brown, $$$, and all things considered.
Now quit hatin' on Chris Brown girl! :winker:
