SUMMARY: QB Billy Volek has put in extra work this week in case he gets the start on Sunday despite indications Kerry Collins will start the game. "I’ve been putting in a lot of extra hours," Volek said. "I came in Tuesday on our day off and broke down some film and got in a lift. I’m putting in extra hours, which I always do. I’m comfortable with the game plan we have, and I’m just ready to get the regular season here." If the Titans intend on using rookie Vince Young during the game Sunday, Volek would be listed as the third-string emergency quarterback Sunday. "I really have no choice," Volek said. "I’ve got to make the best out of what it is. The Tennessee Titans own my rights." If Volek is on the roster Sunday, his $1 million base salary become guaranteed. So far, no offers have been presented to Volek who has a no-trade clause in his contract.

this isn't a big deal. Nobody offers anything, so what. How much signing bonus did Collins get?

Volek doesn't have a roster bonus. Here is what the article actually says:
If Volek is on the Titans roster Sunday, his $1 million base salary guaranteed.

It just means that if the Titans cut him after September 10 then they still have to pay him his salary.

that isn't what is said in the original post " The Tennessee Titans own my rights." If Volek is on the roster Sunday, he will gain a $1 million roster bonus."

I think we will pay him anyways. Besides, there is no guarentee that Collins won't be broken in half before Vince is ready. Also, cutting him not only makes us looks stupid, it makes us look heartless. (which we are) ... however, there is a good chance that someone will want to to business with us before the trade deadline, so if we get another Titans puzzle piece in a week 5 trade, so much the better. His contract is up at the end of this year anyways. (I think) ... it's not like he's got some huge contract that will hurt us and it's not like we don't have cap room or whatever to absorb him... Cutting Volek would be dumb.

Starkiller, where can I find basic terms of the Titans contracts, how long they are, bonuses, cap numbers and the like? Is there a place where the information is broken down in a fairly simplistic manner? Also if there is something that doesn't jive in my post, ie the lenth of his contract, could you clear that up for me?

I understand that there is a good chance he could get cut, but is that really all that beneficial?

The smart thing would be to cut Collins so he doesn't get his salary guaranteed if he goes down.

Starting Vince Young makes more sense than that.

that makes less sense

titancentral.net has a salary cap chart. Of course it's not up to date (it's as of june 14) but it can give you a balllpark

The NFL Players Association has some of that info on their site. It has base salaries year by year throughout the contract. But there are no bonuses listed or salary cap figures.

As mdfan said JTB (on titanscentral) does the best job of keeping track of that, even though it isn't official and he gets some wrong occasionally.

I personally think, if Volek doesn't start that is, that he is a waste of money IMHO. Kerry Collins will be starting, and I think Vince Young will learn a lot from him, and will be ready to go in when needed. Fisher said Young will be the #2 Qb no matter what, so what good is it to have Volek 3rd string emergency qb. We could save money, or we could trade him.

In the end, we are not going to spend all of our cap room. It's Bud's money to spend, so I imagine that he's the guy who will make the final decision on whether to keep Volek (either as a backup or just as trade bait) or just cut him.

Floyd Reese was on George Plaster's radio show this evening and he said, "Billy will receive that bonus if he is still on the team at kickoff." He said it in a strange way. It would be crazy, but why cut him or trade him on opening day? I guess they are trying to do to Billy what they did to Steve and keep him tied up until the very last minute.

I can't see us cutting him. Either trade him for whatever we can get or keep him as security.

Heck he may even start.

I read a possible reason for why Volek is still here...

Eventually he will be traded to San Diego. It has been rumored that they were interested. They need a backup. We want to dump Volek.

So what wouldn't they have already made the trade if it is going to happen? Check out the Titans' week 2 opponent. We don't want to hand them a walking playbook until after the game...

Came straight to me as soon as I read San Diego.

Matt Mauck sucks. I'd rather have Major Applewhite. but for serious, I'd rather pickup a guy like Dave Ragone or Drew Henson and just let him learn for a couple of years while Vince gets his brains beat in.

I agree, but I did read that the Titans told MM to stay in town.

I say keep him unless someone (insert SD) is willing to come up with a good deal, personally that would be a Donnie Edwards trade but I'll take a 2-3 rd pick. I want VY to get the keys asap but I would rather it not happen until after the bye week. I gets us past the worst part of the schedule and lets him ease into his role.

Chargers LB was shot, done for the year.

They won't trade Edwards now and heck, we wouldn't get Edwards (or a 2nd - 3rd pick) for Volek.

I'd rather have Ragone (or Rohan Davey) than Mauck

I'd prefer Ragone to either one of them.
