View Full Version : Saban's red flag...
Creeping-Cruds 09-08-2006, 11:58 AM What was with Saban and his his "I'm not sure what I wanna do here" coach's challenge last night? An NFL head coach needs to make that decision on a dime..
Up to that point they were still in the game but it was all downhill after that..
fairwin 09-08-2006, 12:24 PM He probably sucks at jarts
Yeah, I don't know what happened there.
Poor coaching and stupid mistakes on defense doomed the Dolphins in that game - there's no way the Steelers offense should have scored 21 points against the Dolphins defense with Batch as the QB.

I heard this morning on ESPN that he was waiting for the replay to happen on the big screen and it never came. I believe he was waiting on someone watching the replay on t.v to tell him to challenge it or not and by the time he got the word the Steelers was ready to kick the FG. Does anybody think they should bring back the buzzer?

brink back the buzzer!
or
Tie the red flag to a brick and allow the coach to throw the brick at the refs- that should get their attention!
Vigsted 09-08-2006, 01:05 PM I thought the buzzer was still in use? Anyways, I didn't see the play, but how could Saban not get a hold of the sideline judge?

The buzzer was deemed useless, as it was proven to be too unreliable. It was voted out this past offseason. It was voted in that you could run up or down the sideline, or even onto the field to throw the red hanky.
Credit Saban for NOT knowing the rule.
I would have run onto the field, wound up, and stepped into a heave, aiming at the zebra's noggin.
Crash Override 09-08-2006, 01:43 PM Regardless, they would have scored anyway.

Give the "reviewing" team until just prior to kicking off to review the play.
Everything happens faster during an attempted PAT. And, it seems you don't have the same amount of time to review a (much more important) play.
Just a thought.
nigel 09-08-2006, 02:28 PM Give the "reviewing" team until just prior to kicking off to review the play.
No way. Thats part of the strategy of the game. A lot of times after a questionable call you see the other team hurry to get the next play off so it cant be reviewed. You gotta move quick if you want to challenge.

200 fantasy points for referencing JARTS!
Creeping-Cruds 09-08-2006, 02:41 PM Regardless, they would have scored anyway.
Batch had just fumbled the ball away at the exact same spot.. Maybe they only get three..
Either way credit the loss to Saban (and Culpepper's horrid passing)

Hey thanks!
It did look like he was tossing one of those yard darts out there though...didn't it?
It was a finesse toss.
Sukrillux 09-08-2006, 05:43 PM Saban as well as a few other coaches and players were on the field after he threw the red flag. He threw the flag well before the snap and one of the officials should have seen it. I guess next time he will learn to run up to the ref and throw it in his face. Saban got shafted there... I was really pullin for the Dolphins, too. Put that Steeler SB win behind us with an 0-1 for the squeelers. :grrhee:

More likely they run a more vanilla up the gut run maybe it takes them 3 plays to get it done and they run the clock out or to almost nothing. Him not getting it gave them a chance IMO.
smili 09-08-2006, 09:23 PM Saban has got to be more decisive - he even did a double take, started to toss it once and pulled it back, and then tossed it like he was tossing a quarter in a fountain. If you're going to wait to the last second to challenge at least get near a ref and/or do something to draw some attention.
It reminds me of the team that waited until a split second before the bal was hiked for a game winning field goal attempt - and trying to call a timeout right before the snap so the guy would go ahead with the kick it and then have to rekick it. Cutting it too close imho.
Ewker 09-08-2006, 10:31 PM I think he was trying to decide if it was worth it. There was a good chance they would score and run out the clock even more. I think it was one of those damn if you do damn if you don't choices
GoTitans3801 09-09-2006, 12:24 AM Yeah, but if they'd challenged, maybe Parker would have ran the TD, and my fantasy team would be better off!
The Mrs 09-09-2006, 02:49 AM He was waiting for the "go-ahead" from someone watching the replay. No coach wants to waste a timeout or review something that has no chance to be overturned.
If the TV cameras caught him throwing the flag, one of the MANY refs should have seen it. I think it was a case of no one stepping up. One of the refs saw it, the kick went off and then no one 'fessed up. As soon as one of the refs saw him walking with the red flag in his hand, he should have held up his hand and put the whistle in his mouth.
Or maybe J. Porter was giving out kisses to the refs as well.

/QUOTE]
There are 7 officials, none of them have "constantly watch coaches to see if they are going to throw the flag" as their responsibility. Just like there isn't a dedicated "timeout watching" official.

I like the way you think
pittsburgH SUCKS!
LazyManJackson 09-09-2006, 04:39 PM I briefly felt sorry for Saban cause he did throw it before the xtra, but he did look very cautious about throwing it, he had to be more descisive, but it was a good play by the Steelers, but what a poor FG by Reed...

Man I'll second that.. I hope Palmer eats the towel-biters for breakfast twice this year..
A favorite NFL memory: the look on that caveman Cowher's face after the fireworks field goal #3 by Nedney in the playoffs. I could see the smoke coming from his ears from across the field from my seat 20 rows up...
