View Full Version : What the Titans need with 40 mill in cap space
BigRob 11-02-2006, 09:41 PM First thing,
Get Nate Clements to pair with Pac Man (If he is still here). Clements, Pac, Hope would be a great secondary.
Use the rest of the money to go after some pash rushers and defensive tackles, and skill position players to pair with Vince.
Draft:
Pick up a first rate Free Safety in the Draft.
Pick up some offensive skill players with good Receiver draft.
Pick up some defensive help early.
Don't be surprised if a big chunk of the cap space ends up paying for a rather large unscheduled cap hit that ends up getting accelerated into 2007....

Gunny 11-02-2006, 09:58 PM Pac won't go.
bongo59 11-02-2006, 10:00 PM yes he will..................he's going down under
SupDawg 11-02-2006, 10:30 PM Just stay away from Freeney and Calvin Johnson.
bigtitan53279 11-02-2006, 11:10 PM Just stay away from Freeney and Calvin Johnson.
why would you stay away from the best player in the nation at a position of need?
Childress79 11-02-2006, 11:35 PM A couple of minders for Pacman
RyansTitans 11-03-2006, 12:19 AM why would you stay away from the best player in the nation at a position of need?
how many times do i have to say this. Ted Ginn JR is the best reciever in the whole friggin NCAA. Faster , HE CAN CATCH , and is a great returner...
Calvin has wonderful hands and decent speed.. He dosent have breakout speed like Ginn...
Teddy will turn out a better reciever then Johnson in the NFL you all will see
1st off .... we do NOT need an ELITE WR, he would be underused
as much as I'd like to have a CJ or a TGjr, I don't see it
this is not a gunslinging offense - never has been
strange as it may seem, we would be better served going for Peterson
(as long as we are drafting positions not really in need)
WE NEED cornerbacks. for weeks it's been only the need for 1 ... now it's looks more and more like 2. I'm all for picking up a Vet and drafting another
Gunny 11-03-2006, 12:37 AM Pacman will stay, drafting another sounds good.
Drafting a DE or DT (with or without Haynesworth)
We don't need CJ, Jnr or Peterson (another injury prone back, no thanks)
If Pacman was going to be released, he'd be deactivated for the rest of the season ala TO and Keyshaun Johnson.
Vigsted 11-03-2006, 04:56 AM how many times do i have to say this. Ted Ginn JR is the best reciever in the whole friggin NCAA. Faster , HE CAN CATCH , and is a great returner...
Can I have some of what you're smoking? Calvin Johnson is the better receiver without question. Ginn is a good receiver with great speed, but speed is greatly overestimated in the NFL, what you need is incredible hands. And we already have plenty of guys on the roster who can do returns very well.
Laserjock 11-03-2006, 06:24 AM We need two monsters...one for the Dline and one for MLB. I want an MLB that is a head hunter...that plays better when his shoulder is separated kind of guy. Peter is going the way of all slow white guys in sports....smarts doesn't keep up with physical abilities in this game.
Go get a CB and SS in FA if possible. May have to draft a WR because I do think we need a tall, fast and strong guy like AZ's Fitzgerald or Bouldin. Would love to have one of those guys.
Titans2004 11-03-2006, 07:16 AM I think you have to spend money getting a stud CB. Insurance for Pac.
We will know if RB is a need by how White does late in the season and if we restructure Henry.
If you have a chance to get a true #1 WR like Johnson then you do it. He will improve the running game by forcing the double team. VY is never going to be a Manning type of QB with awesome timing/accuracy thus a bigger more physical WR with great hands to snag the ball out of frame is what he needs.
I hope that Tulloch proves to be a stud MLB.
This draft is going to be the best safety draft in yrs and since safeties are undervalued they tend to fall some. Thus a good one will be on the board in the early 2nd and most likely early 3rd.
Just stay away from Freeney and Calvin Johnson.
If the Titans do not make a serious offer for Freeney then Reese deserves to be fired for that alone. Got to offer at least enough to ensure he leaves the AFCS northern border town.
No mention of an O-Line.....I'd like to protect our investment and open holes in the running game. If we control time of posession, our D won't need all the upgrades.
Soxcat 11-03-2006, 08:08 AM I wouldn't care if we spent every first round pick on defense in the draft.
Just pick the most dominating S, LB, CB, DT or DE available and don't worry about "filling needs". We need studs not just bodies taking up postions.
It is about time we built a dominating defense and considering our QB of the future and the desire to run the ball we could use some OL but Reese has shown he can get some of those gems in the 4th and 5th round and we already have our LT.
Agreed.
Tulluck might or might not be good, but I want a beast at MLB and safties who bring some pain with their tackles.
Vigsted 11-03-2006, 08:13 AM Our O-line is not looking bad for the future, unless Amano is going to be the starting C when Mawae retires, we need to start looking for one to groom. Other than that we need another G to compliment Bell. I think Roos and Stewart are going to be good at the tackles. All in all something to be adressed in rounds 3-7.
Riverman 11-03-2006, 08:57 AM O-line, D-line and a kick A blocking back (not sold on Hall yet.)
zackmann 11-03-2006, 10:38 AM I want Adalius Thomas...he is so versitile, we could play him at DE, LB or S...
I'd also have my eye out for Jared Allen or Freeney or Lance Briggs...
And I am not in favor of drafting a WR in the 1st round...
BigRob 11-03-2006, 10:47 AM I want Adalius Thomas...he is so versitile, we could play him at DE, LB or S...

I love Adalius Thomas as well, but he is already 8 years into his career. Don't spend big cap money on a player on the back half of his career. Plus, you will pay through the nose because of his versatility. All of the 3-4 teams are going to be gunning for him along with any 4-3 teams that need LB and Pass Rushing help.
bigtitan53279 11-03-2006, 11:28 AM how many times do i have to say this. Ted Ginn JR is the best reciever in the whole friggin NCAA. Faster , HE CAN CATCH , and is a great returner...
ginn runs latterally too much trying to break the big one. he'll get clobbered in the nfl doing that. give calvin johnson troy smith and see how much better his stats are.
We don't need CJ,
you've been saying this the past few week and i dont get it. bennett is gone after this season. givens has shown nothing. brandon jones, as much as i love him, hasnt shown he can stay healthy. wade has never been more than a #3 and williams and roby are nothing more than bodies.
our problem the past 4 or 5 years has been we havent had a game breaker at WR. someone who can get big chunks on drives. it's hard to go 70-80 yards a drive when it takes 12-15 plays.
theprizdfighter 11-03-2006, 11:58 AM Mario Manningham of Michigan has hands, size, and speed!
I also like the S from Notre Dame with the wierd name. The one who boxes. He is one bad dude. Lets get him in the 2nd.
Titans2008 11-03-2006, 12:56 PM I think Manningham is a soph.
Titans2008 11-03-2006, 01:02 PM If we can just sign Freeney, we can compete next year. We don't really NEED to draft a wr, but we don't have THAT many holes. IMO, take the best player available in the first round, and if we finish the year badly, that could very well be CJ. What we really need is a guard, center, FS (1st or 2nd round please), MLB, backup QB (free agency), and another CB. Center and guard can be had anywhere in the middle rounds. MLB and FS should be priorities for the first 3 rounds, but if there is someone on the board who is a special player, we definately don't pass on him just because we don't need him. If we can't get Freeney, we'll need to probably use our first rounder at that position to get a difference maker. I'm still not sold on any of the prospects at this point...
Childress79 11-03-2006, 01:06 PM Solidify the D immediatey with the money & we can be back as a contender in one swift offseason.
Defence wins games, the O is developing okay as it is. Altough you can never have too many good linemen they need to be drafted. Free agent OL cost the earth.
Vince10 11-03-2006, 06:25 PM Ted Ginn is not the best WR on his own team. I like Gonzales a lot. Ginn does have great speed, though. The best WR is either Johnson or Jarrett. The Titans should draft neither of them. Other needs, such as DL, DB, and OL are far more pressing. RB is far from a need. Lendale and Henry are very good.
Titans2008 11-03-2006, 07:43 PM Henry is one game away from a season long suspension. Chris Brown will be gone. Do you want Lendale "I pulled my hamstring getting out of bed" White as your only decent option? Neither do I.
bongo59 11-03-2006, 07:48 PM Fragile Fred will be a FA too next yr..................and I bet he would come cheap.................

Alright, Ill be anyonbe that once Lendale White gets going as a starter and gets enough touches, he becomes a straight up monster, just like he was at USC
bongo59 11-03-2006, 08:01 PM i like LW alot................but he needs to get serious about his job................as for other guys..............I hear Greg Ellis and Shaun Ellis may be shown the door in 07..............both guys are DE that are best suited in a 4-3 but are being asked to play OLB...............in a 3-4...................they could be causualties.
TitanJeff 11-03-2006, 08:07 PM Looks may be deceptive but LW will need to have a monster off season if he's to become anything close to an RB who can take the load. I don't think he shown yet he can be durable which means the Titans have to sign Henry or Brown or look for a reliable third-down RB.

He went 3 years in USC without any big injuries. I think if we can drool over Adrian Peterson, who has had at leaste two major injuries in his time at OU, then we shouldn't be worrying about LenDale's durability. We should get that out of the way this year and just set a game aside where he can "be the man".
avvie 11-03-2006, 09:46 PM Why isn't "Give Avvie a loan" on that list?

He also didn't take the load at USC. Since being drafted with the hammy, he's had various smaller issues in camp and during the season (ankle) that has limited him. Just looking at him, I'm not convinced he is physically able to take the punishment of 25+ carries a game.
And I am not among those who would risk Peterson with an early first.

The only way to find out is to try him for a game. I don't know what you mean by his physical looks, he seems to be at a comfortable weight. And he even surprised me with his bursts of speed when he got the touch.
can someone please explain to me why they do not feel Corner is our most pressing need ?
paraconspiracy 11-04-2006, 12:50 AM because hill is still young... we have a few young guys with talent. corners dont always just take off in this league. and you can usually help a corner a little without giving too much else on the defense.
really i guess its matter of opinion of what our biggest need is.
some think corner
some think WR
some think safety
some think d-line
i would rather have a probowler at any of those instead of a corner
probowl DE gets pressure on the QB... allowing a bad corner to look better.
a great safety that can cover alot of space can make up for a lower level corner a bit.
and a great WR could open up our offense like we havent seen since the 80's
and who's gonna start opposite Hill ?
seriously ... we need 2 .... not just one
unless the boy makes a DRASTIC change in behavior, I would bet against Adam Jones being a Titan in '08
paraconspiracy 11-04-2006, 02:00 AM well maybe.. but pac's here for now. you dont go out to find his replacement before we decide if he's still here. if he's gone in 08... then we have next years draft and free agency to replace him.
Fragile Fred will be a FA too next yr..................and I bet he would come cheap.................
he should
The only way to find out is to try him for a game.White not only didn't carry a full load at USC, he played in twelve-game seasons. If he's going to be a feature back in the NFL, he'll need to carry the ball 20+ times per game times 16 games, a minimum of 320 carries a year. If you want him to get 25 carries a game, that's 400 carries a year, not including the preseason and (hopefully) playoffs.
In his three years at USC, White carried only 197, 203, and 141 times.
It takes a full season to find out if a back can carry a full load, not one game.
Banshee2 11-04-2006, 12:15 PM Mario Manningham of Michigan has hands, size, and speed!

I like Manningham, think he'll be around later.
Zbkowski (pronounced "Zib-ih-cow-ski") is the guy from ND with the weird name. I also like Samardzija (your guess on that one), he seems like Drew with more speed...of course, the Cubbies may have dibs on that one!
Hellblitzer 11-04-2006, 12:28 PM FA#1 Clements
FA#2 FREENEY
1st round... trade way down if were top 5. If not the best player available.
2nd round... SAFETY
3rd round... DT
4th round... QB
5th round... WR
Now in a perfect world we can trade Pacman for a late 1st or a 2nd.
Banshee2 11-04-2006, 01:11 PM I think Collins stays around to be the Neil Odonnell-type cat for Vince...
I like the thought of grabbing great FAs from our own division. Makes us better and Indy/Jax worse. I give Freeney a TON of cash and pray he doesn't get hurt (as our FAs have a tendency to do)...
I'm not as sure we need a WR. I don't think we've seen anything from Givens, but I don't necessarily think that's his fault. The guy's got skill, we just need to be a little patient. BJones has come along nicely as well. I think WR in the 1st round is a mistake. Defense wins champs, so let's build the D. That being said, I won't complain if we give VY a nice, big target to throw to...
Peterson is not where we wanna go. Trade down and take Mike Bush from U-of-L. HUMONGOUS, and he's a TD machine.
I do agree that S is a need. I like getting one in the 2-3rd. I'd rather take a seasoned corner from FA, someone who can play either zone or man straight up...
One more thing, a prediction. I'm saying it now - Pacman will be here next season and will explode. We all had to wait for Haynesworth to grow up and look at what happened with him! Wait...nevermind.
Just my thoughts.

As much as I would love for us to pick up Adrian Peterson
We have spent 3 first day picks in the past 5-6 years on RB
Brown-3 round
Henry-(traded for 3rd round)
White-2nd round
I realize that Brown will probably leave for greener pastures and a new hospital to visit on a seasonly basis, but White and Henry can carry the load. A pick will need to be spent in the mid rounds for a faster, more elusive back to change the pace.
That is, unless we really want to use the wishbone, which Im not opposed to ;)
Da Architek 11-04-2006, 02:10 PM Does anybody have a clue about the progress of Lowry or Fuller. If one of them can really step up the S problem is solved... Big IF tho
TitanJeff 11-04-2006, 02:50 PM Does anybody have a clue about the progress of Lowry or Fuller. If one of them can really step up the S problem is solved... Big IF tho
Titans Radio had an article on Fuller yesterday. He's still not 100% from his injury last season. Maybe he pushes LT very soon.
They like Lowry who has stood out on special teams. The depth chart has him behind Fuller but you wonder if he might slide over and become the #2 behind Hope at some point.
ammotroop 11-04-2006, 02:59 PM This offseason will be crazy yet again. THe outcome of the next five games will determine a lot. Plus the season is long, lets hope for no serious injuries. I just want to watch Young improve, and I dont think it would hurt to give him another weapon. The defense needs help from the top down.

IMO we could get a S off the street to "push" LT IMO. I suspected Fuller wasn't 100% and that was the reason we haven't seen as much of him. If we win a few more games this year we might be looking for a S in the first round of the draft. The kid from LSU might be a nice pickup.
PhiSlammaJamma 11-04-2006, 08:11 PM We have enuff thugs to steal some more cap space.
bongo59 11-04-2006, 08:51 PM i think there is an excellent chance that we lose over 35 % of the roster next yr.................I also think that we will lose Henry and Brown...........AH and AJones................the latest is the team may really look to reshape themselves next yr..................with trades and cap room. I have heard that there is real concern about giving Henry a new deal with him being a strike away considering that VY really needs a strong run game to develop....................bringing in a vet RB like Taylor or Green on a two yr deal ..................also McGahee maybe free too............he is said to want out and wants no part of Buffalo.......to keep him they would have to tag him and I dotn know if they will do it.....................Greg and Shaun Ellis are out there too at DE and Adalius Thomas fits a 3-4 mold great but he has also played a 4-3 end and did it well.........................so is Nate Clemments.......................there will also be quite a few players let go from teams that one might not expect for cap reasons......................Mike Williams and Ricky Williams Dom Davis and even Robaire Smith are on that list........................Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen too are rumored to be out in Wash...................................
bigtitan53279 11-04-2006, 08:57 PM normally there is about a 25% roster change, so 35% is not a stretch.
and why would robaire be released for cap reasons? every indication was we were willing to give albert an extension, and now with this whole stomping thing it looks like we wont. that would easily open up robaire for an extension.
bongo59 11-04-2006, 09:00 PM Robaire wants to test the market once again..............he hit the lottery once and he knows the Titans wont offer him a deal like he got from Houston....................Somebody else might and he wants the chance..............the Titans tried to get him to sign a new deal the last two weeks and they were rebuffed.
cld12pk2go 11-05-2006, 09:00 AM I would offer Robaire a 4yr 10-12 Million deal . It is possible that he could get 50% more than that on the market though...
I hope someone doesn't give him another king's ransome...
GoTitans3801 11-05-2006, 09:28 AM Well, we've got to keep at least a couple DTs on the team. Mahelona is here to stay, but long will be coming back from injury, and I don't think starks is in the best standing with the domestic issues. I think we'll keep one or the other of Albert or Smith.
I just hope we get a DL guy either in the draft or FA who can really help make a difference. A stronger Dline helps defense SO Much!
Starkiller 11-05-2006, 12:10 PM I would offer Robaire a 4yr 10-12 Million deal . It is possible that he could get 50% more than that on the market though...

He'd probably get twice that much on the open market...
Banshee2 11-05-2006, 06:17 PM I wondered about Mike Williams (DET)...I thought maybe he might be cast off from up there real soon and then maybe Norm doesn't have to stand up and pound the desk so much.
Maybe the USC connection can spark us a little.
jagsontherise 11-05-2006, 08:05 PM Fragile Fred will be a FA too next yr..................and I bet he would come cheap.................
