CHOW, SCHWARTZ IN A SCRUM?

Word on the NFL grapevine is that Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz got into a shouting match after Sunday's win over the Jaguars.

(Guys, you won the game. Be happy.)

Apparently, Schwartz was miffed that quarterback Vince Young threw a pass late in the game, with the Titans clinging to a seven-point lead.

Specifically, the ill-advised attempt came with 72 seconds remaining and the Titans facing third down and 12 from the Jaguars 44. (The field position was the result of a failed onside kick attempt by the Jags.) Jacksonville had no timeouts remaining; thus, if the clock had not been stopped by the incompletion, there would have been less than thirty seconds remaining after the punt.

The rumor is that Young actually changed the play from a run to a pass (hello, single-digit Wonderlic score). Regardless, Schwartz was livid, and Chow supposedly got an earful in the locker room. Head coach Jeff Fisher had to separate the two.

Man, we wonder what would have happened if the Titans hadn't won five games in a row.

FRICTION BETWEEN FISHER, YOUNG?

Word has reached PFT world headquarters that the Vince Young entourage is becoming increasingly annoyed with Titans coach Jeff Fisher.

There's a perception/belief that Fisher has been badmouthing Young to Fisher's friends in the media, pointing out the things that Young has been doing wrong instead of the things that the rookie from Texas has been doing right.

One of Young's harshest critics has been ESPN's Merril Hoge. Most recently, Hoge suggested on this weekend's NFL Matchup show that Young should have thrown the pass instead of run -- on the stirring 39-yard touchdown scamper that delivered a victory in Young's debut in his hometown of Houston.

So why would Fisher be dissing his new quarterback? Because Fisher didn't want him. Fisher and offensive coordinator Norm Chow wanted USC quarterback Matt Leinart. Now that Young is taking the league by storm (including an appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated), Fisher possibly feels compelled to point out privately Young's flaws.

After all, if the team is winning games despite Young's mistakes and limitations, the conclusion could be that it's happening because the rest of the team is playing pretty darn well.

And being coached well, too.

I think Schwartz is feeling the heat. He also had a tirade after the game. He's probably thinking that his coaching azz is on the line next year. If we lost this game somehow because of Vince's mistake, Schwartz probably was thinking it could cost him his job.

Chow should've said, "Your defense is ranked last in the NFL and you're trying to tell ME how to coach?"

AND

The whole thing about Fisher and Young = :bsflag:

Call me crazy, but Hoge and Fisher are very close. They have vacationed together. Well, more like fishing trips.

Remember in 99-2001. Hoge had Fisher's back when ever they were talking about the Titans.

It does raise the eyebrow a bit. Is Hoge only acting out what Fisher is telling him to? Hoge is literally looking like an idiot of course, but why would he say that VY was the demise of the TN franchise? That's pretty out there considering he's just an analyst.

Something to ponder.

Can't buy into Fisher using media outlets to point out flaws in Young. That sort of thing can bite you hard.

if vince and fish were not getting along and the tension was as bad as PFT says, i think bud would side with vince and fish would not be here next year.

since bud has already said that wont happen, i think it's safe to say things are fine.

I could believe the Norm v Schwartz, but not the VY v Fisher, Vy is like Mcnair, and Fisher loves Mcnair and are still good friends to this day, so I think VY and Fisher will bond the same way

Chow should have punched him in the mouth...Schwartz would have just bent over, gone into a soft 'zone' and said "it doesn't matter if you are kicking my arse, I'm still winning. I'm a GENIUS! I'm a GENIUS!"

I would think Swartz wasn't too pleased that the offense wasn't contributing much. It had been a long day for him. He could finally relax, and poof...Vince throws a pass that leaves them a lot of time on the clock, especially against a very tired defense. I am sure it was the proverbial last straw, especially after Vince had taken a 22 yard sack earlier.

Yeah, but why scream at the coach AFTER the game, when the team won? Pointless and classless. Address your concerns when breaking down film and during practice, not getting into a shouting match. Idiot move if this is true.

Jimbo is trying to Schwartzify Chow. I am still unconvienced on Chow, but I don't think the Schwartzing is going to take.

I'm glad Schwartz and Chow went off at it.. A little competition between the two should help both coaches/sides try to prove they are better than each other and try to minimize mistakes on the field, and i'm sure that will reflect on gameday. We all know who the better one is though and who's the lucky one. I blame schwartz anyway.. If it escalates I hope Bud makes the right decision to fire Schwartzie.

Its silly to assume Fisher holds a grudge against VY despite the fact that he was drafted instead of Leinart whom rumors says he wanted. Lets remember that VY practically added a few years to JF's contract after many thought he was gone after the season. You can tell by the look on JF's face whenever VY scores a TD that he's crazy about him and proud to have him on the team. Who wouldn't!

Leinart doesnt fit into our offense anyway.. who's he going to throw to... Drew Buterfingers? There are many Leinarts in the league, but only one VY. I'm sure fish realizes that.

The fight between both coordinators (if true) also send a message to VY to weigh his decisions more carefully before pulling plays out of his ***. A bad decision by him makes his coach take critisism as well.

well if he really did change the play, dont u think that one of the vets in the huddle would have said something about it being a pass play, i mean i kno vince gets the play call, but wouldnt one of the vets step up and say that they should do a run play

PitBull
12-20-2006, 02:23 AM
Didn't he change the play at Houston to score the game winning TO. Somebody in the huddle (i don't remember who) told him it wasen't a very smart call and he should throw, yet he told him to stuff it and played it regardless.

I'm sure i read/heard that somewhere. Did anyone hear else hear that, or am I just imagining it?

chow vs. schartz, fisher vs. young...

...IN A STEEL CAGE!!!

Maybe I live a sheltered life, but it sure has been a crappy coupla years with the coaching staff.

The Schwartz attack is pretty darn stupid...irrespective of my opinion of Chow, I am POSITIVE that neither he nor Fisher approved of the pass play. That was just plain old rookie ignorance. I'm betting that the thought of a clock never even entered VY's mind...after riding the pine all day and having no offensive luck at all, I'm guessing he was hoping to provide SOMETHING worth seeing because the fans wanted it. Hey, people DO screw up on their jobs once in a while.

JS, in his hissyfit, said he only cares about the W...so why the turmoil? Didn't we get the W?

If Swartz got yelled at for every time he lined the corners up 8 yards behind scrimmage in the red zone he'd be teary eyed from Chow's garlic breath.

I think we are too predictable. Run Henry somewhere, usually off tackle....it's not really surprising anyone. I will say Henry blew one third down when he tried to bounce it outside. All he had was a corner coming up, and instead of putting his head down and running at him, he tried to use his speed to get outside and by that time it was too late.

root for chow to come out of the booth during a game and handle shwartz the way Buddy Ryan handled Kevin Gilbride. That was a bright shinning moment in Oilers/Titans history. :slap:

Well, if he did we might get some media attention! :woohoo:

Yep, and nothing against Henry, but hes not that fast to bounce it out like he did that play

I don't think this even happened. Just doesn't make since. The only person to get mad at here is Vince. He made a boneheaded mistake. But so what, the mistake didn't cost us the game and it was far from the only mistake made on Sunday. I think this is just some more PFT junk.

No kidding. Vince made a mistake, the coaches acknowledged it. Don't make fire when there isn't even smoke.
