yeah, in four or five months the iphone will be icrap compared to something else.

That's why I still have one of those handcrank phones where I just ask the operator to connect me to who I want to talk to. The technology changes so fast, there's no point in ever getting anything better... :ha:

Funny side note. In 2001, my best friend and I had an argument about this. I told him phones would be able to play music and take pictures soon, he said it was at least ten years away. I said it would be here in five or a little less. The early ones hit five years on the dot.

The good thing about technology advancing so quickly is that a device like an iPhone will be like $5000 to purchase but in two years time when something more advanced comes out you will get an iPhone for ALOT cheaper and it isn't all that different.

Same goes for stuff like TVs, DVDs, Projectors etc.

I got the feeling, if America is ever on the brink of getting pwned by Japs or Chinese, we might have to nuke'em, bc were so far behind, so actually, wed wipe out the technology we didnt already have, and hopefully develop it ourselves

This iPhone is a clever scheme...since it runs on Mac OS, it introduces Windows users to the system...I'm sure that Apple is counting on a percentage of users to jump platforms.

The Mac Mini was supposed to do that also...worked on me!

ipod got me to use itunes, eventually. They are gaining ground. And they are gaining ground where they are skilled. Ultimately, they could win. When you think on an evolutionary level, the only reason humans even evolved was because they wanted to adorn their caves with art, which led to intelligence, and apple is all about art. They are the visual. They ultimately have control if microsoft doesn't adapt. Tools will only take you so far. Art and beauty will always win.

However, I have some inside info. Apple makes awesome products, but they are vicious brutes to work for. And I may be dealing with that soon as a Mac tech.

Apple is winning because of simplicity. They were the first to make it easy to use an mp3 player. They were the first to make it east to sync the player to your music library on a computer. And they were the first to make it easy to buy music online (legally). If tech companies can't make the experience easy, consumers won't buy into it...

And that's what they want to do with the smart phone.

Mac OS X is simply more secure that Windows. And this is coming from a guy who spends his days fixing people's computers for a living. Now, Vista will be more secure than XP, but the question will be how much (and at what cost)...

I don't see how the viruses is so much though, I don't get any. (and recently switched from Norton to Avast)

Viruses are a huge problem (in Windows, anyway). Of course, so is Norton Antivirus so it's better off you dumped it.

Personally, I've told all my clients to hold off on Vista. No need to rush out and get a brand new Microsoft OS that's sure to have bugs. Wait a while for things to get patched. Personally, I fear I'll have to go out and buy it.

Also, if you do buy it, never buy the retail version. You can get the full OEM version (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070130-8730.html) online for half the price.

I have a Dell Dimension e310 i got it last yr for xmas, it has windows XP and runs like Norton 05, i have no viruses, never had any problems either, and i plan on getting the new Norton later this year, i think that as long as youre not using your computer for the wrong reasons, you dont have to worry

Never waste your money on Norton. Just download a good free antivirus app like AVG. Not only is is just as good at spotting viruses, but it won't slow your computer down as much (and is free).

Norton sucks.

I had the odd virus using Norton Internet Security Suite & although they were detected,the suite often couldn't remove them. That's no help to the average noob who buys a PC off the shelf.

I switched to Zone Alarm Security Suite after reading reviews on it,I would recommend it to anyone. On it's 1st scan it picked up & fixed a couple of trojans that Norton didn't even detect.

IMO if you run XP & don't want to get viruses; browse with Firefox,avoid searching for porn & stay away from filesharing programmes like torrents.

That's exactly right. You'd be a fool to buy this version cause you'll be pissed when the new one comes out. It will work off of the 3G system and the internet will be lightning speeds better than the Edge that it currently works off of. This makes a huge difference considering the phone has to have internet to work properly. There are other things to that I could mention too but it would take a while.... Just wait till the next one comes out before you spend $600 on a phone, trust me.
