View Full Version : Chargers to look for new HC next week?
Vigsted 01-14-2007, 08:21 PM Seriously, how can you justify keeping Schottenheimer... that was the worst piece of coaching I've seen in a long time. I can't believe they went away from their unpredictable blitzing defence that clearly had Brady flustered in the early part of the game, and instead started using the Schwartz' rush 4 cover nothing defence, allowing Brady to pick them apart.
And what idiot does not knock down the pass on a 4th down??

The same type idiot that doesn't fall on a punt when he muffs it. Chargers were very poor today, considering how many times they started at their own 40 or better and came away with nothing. Even had a 3rd down at the 33 and Rivers takes a sack. Pretty bad effort all around.
PhiSlammaJamma 01-14-2007, 08:45 PM I thought they should have run LT more down the stretch. Other than that, just goofs. The int fumble, the return fumble, all costly.

Why of course it was Schwartz's fault and Bennett for the dropped passes and running out of bounds with no db within 10 yards.

tha stupid challenge costed them a timeout at the end of the game. i have no idea what marty saw there, he was probably just desperate.
oh, and for the person who asked why hill should have knocked the ball down on his late game picks, ask marlon mccree why.
Jwill1919 01-14-2007, 10:01 PM Actually reminds me alot of a Titans game; dominate the whole game, but keep the opposition close enough to make a move and then lose in the end by playing conservative. LT looked awfully upset at the end. Sometimes players can't overcome coaching, in the case of Schottenheimer and Schwartz.
bigtitan53279 01-14-2007, 10:03 PM LT looked awfully upset at the end. Sometimes players can't overcome coaching, in the case of Schottenheimer and Schwartz.
that's because of this.
"I would never react in that way. I was very upset," Tomlinson said. "When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for, that is disrespectful. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach."
The coordinators made all the calls, not Schottenheimer. He wasn't even wearing a headset much of the time, if not all. You can't blame him for making bad calls in the game.
But with the power struggle going on between him and Smith, no telling what might happen.
FightinTitan 01-14-2007, 10:27 PM No, the Chargers will be looking in New Orleans for Drew Brees.
Phillip Rivers was missing in action today.
I did not see Marrty drop any of the dropped passes. I did not see Marty fumble the balls or throw thee interceptions. I did not see himm wearing #29 and committ a huge personal foul.
avvie 01-14-2007, 10:43 PM I was under the impression that Marty had learned his lesson and would'nt go conservative this time around.
I was wrong.
The players made some huge mistakes, but I too was looking at the field and asking myself "Is he playing zone D??"
Why, oh why, do coaches stop doing things that work?
Now, I'm not putting it all on Marty's head, but it did seem to have a big influence.
Riverman 01-14-2007, 10:47 PM Except for needing to run the ball more and clock managementment I can't put it on Schottenheimer. He challenged the INT/Pats fumble recovery I believe to give his defense a breather in hopes for a stop. Didn't work out, and they REALLY needed that timeout in the end. If they had stopped the rest of the drive and the 2 point conversion we wouldn't be discussing this.
Hey- the Pats are not just lucky- they play with INTENSITY and CREATE their opportunities. Troy Brown went for the strip, got it and Caldwell busted his butt to recover it. Brady led them on the rest of drive throwing darts. The receivers caught it. We know about how their defense plays with great synergy. Somehow, the Pats locker room/team chemistry always has them playing with this style.
I can't put all that on Schottenheimer.
GLinks 01-14-2007, 11:05 PM Marty Schotty will be back next year. They failed to close the door when the could, but I doubt someone else could come in next year and get them as close. Plus the players love him. Regardless of the loss, they have a good thing going and they shouldn't change it.
ezeblazin 01-15-2007, 02:08 AM Speaking of bad calls.......the worst call of the game was going for it on 4th and 11. Not only did they cost themselves 3 points, but the field position the patriots got allowed them to score 3.
6 point swing in a 3 point game
Laserjock 01-15-2007, 06:22 AM LT + :spud: [more] = win
Failure to let LT :spud: now = Shotty go
Carpy 01-15-2007, 10:48 AM You gotta feel for Marty. If he runs LT too much he's blasted agai for "being too conservative in the playoffs", even though that was clearly his best chance to win.
The challenge, the burnt timeout straight after an injury delay and the 4th and 11 call are on the coaching staff (Marty or his assistants), but so are the excellent screen call at the exact right time. The defensive call that pressured Brady into throwing the pick on 4th down and the various other play calls that gave Rivers wide open receivers to throw to.
The MANY dropped passes, the running out of bounds when you have 30 yards of free field in front of you, the muffed punt, the failure to get both feet down in bounds, the headbutt, the decision to intercept the ball instead of bat it down and not cover it up, the wasted time through players being in the wrong position in the final hectic minute - are ALL on the players.
You tell me where the blame should sit.
Miami and/or Oakland have got to be praying the Chargers let Marty go, because he would become far and away the best candidate for their HC openings.
Chargers announce Marty's staying. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20070118-9999-1n18marty.html
kinda weird how Marty can consistently put together over .500 teams and lose one game in the playoffs and get the boot; while JEff has had a hard time getting 5 wins and suddenly gets bck to .500 and gets a multi-year extension
how the hell do you fire a coach that went 14-2 (2006)
9-7 (2005)
and 12-4 (2004)
I'm sure we'd all love to own those records
and like AD stated, the Chargers are committed to MArtyball in 07
Vigsted 01-18-2007, 11:48 AM Well, the problem is no team or owner are going to be very happy having a team that is consistently is among the top 6 in the NFL regular season, but never win a playoff game.
Imagine if Fisher kept going 12-4 but never advanced beyond divisional week, would you be happy to always come in second (or in this case 3rd(T))? I wouldn't. Of course, maybe they should keep Schottenheimer for the regular season, but then send him on holiday when the playoffs come around. Whether it's his fault or not, he has a bad record when it comes playoffs.

Its funny how people see things and interpret things.
I saw Phillip Rivers as the propblem for the Chargers. I thought he threw some stinky passes and made some poor decisions. Add in many dropped passes when Rivers did throw the ball on target.

No that's not funny at all, that's how humans work. Stimuli and response.
LazyManJackson 01-18-2007, 06:21 PM My initial thought when people were saying Marty should go, was that it was the players mistakes/individual mistakes that cost the chargers the game, and you just can't get away with that when playing the pats...
I still stand by that...

True, but you're not going to consider Schottenheimer's abysmal PO record at all?
