I was browsing Amazon.com and saw Oblivion is available for the PS3 (not out here yet) and I was thinking of getting it. (Amazingly they will ship out Oblivion to Australia but not Resistance: Fall of Man - wtf?)

Anyway can someone tell me what the fighting style is like in it and I understand you can pretty much chose your own storyline is this true?

i think it is one of the most boring games i've ever played, but to each his own.

I thought it was one of the best games I've ever played. Only true problem was constant loading times but that may be different with the more powerful PS3.

I never had problems with loading times. I mean there are loading times, but they're pretty quick, like 3-4 seconds at the most.

Regarding storyline, there is a main storyline that you can follow whenever you want to, but other than that you can explore the world at will and follow a lot of other sub-storylines.

Voice and the cinematic sequences are very well done. I personally think the intro is one of the best game intro's ever made.

Gunny, I don't like RPGs and I have played this game inside and out a couple of times. What I like about it is the mixture of hack-n-slash game play with RPG style leveling and story. Think KOTOR with even more control of the fight.

I don't think it was boring. I haven't finished it because the gates were a real pain in my ***. That first one took forever. At some point I'll pick it back up again. The hardest part for me was the fish scales. I spent days trying to figure out how to get those damn fish. The whole vampire thing was a pain too. But overall, the game is a lot of fun because it is so wide open. You just have to be able to put it down in my opinion, and then come back to it again. I don't know how much further I have to go in it, but I made it to the school and now I'm closing gates up. I figure I'm getting pretty close to the end.

You probably played it on the PC. The 360 version suffers from lengthy loading times, something that was greatly improved on the PS3.

Vigisted, Gunn..
i just got done playing the PC version for the last couple of hours for the very first time.
You're right.. its awesome.

I just made it out of the sewers after the king was killed and i barely survived one of the goblins in there who was plastering the **** outta me with magic spells and beams..

i hid behind a rock and attacked back with my bow and arrows..
How do i use my magic?
I haven't figured that out yet.

The race i chose was imperial, and i decided to be an archer. My sign is ummm.. can't remember but i get 150 points of magicary.

I saved the minute i walked out the sewer and reached the greenary.. The big heavily armored guard told me that I'm supposed to go to this creek place to find the king's son 'jeffery' and give him the amulet.

Can't they just fedex it instead..
Whats with the sewer rats... they're as large as horses.

crap its 2am.. gotta hit the sack. Have to be in the office in 5 hours.. :(
tips are welcome and would be appreciated.. ;)

You are about to lose like 40 hours of your life to this game. Have fun.

Puck
05-22-2007, 02:02 PM
40 ? damn, that's awfully quick

while the main quest can be completed quite quickly, if you plan to join all the factions like the Thieves / Dark Brotherhood / to go with all the Fighters / Mages - you could easily dump 100 in here

--and with the release of the Shivering Isles that should add about 20 to it

Had to start again but it makes a little more sense when you chose the characteristics and all that of your character.

I'm playing this game now and have a question. I made myself a Nord warrior. The first spell I got was the one where you shoot the fireball. What would be a good upgrade to this long range attack? Do I have to upgrade magika somehow before I can get better spells?

I saw spells for sale for mega bucks at Imperial City....guess I need to be able to barter well to to get a better price?

Rebel Titan
01-11-2008, 08:56 AM
After you have risen in levels at the Arcane University you will be able to create your own spells. They can be costly but they are well worth it. Plus, you can create armor, rings, weapons, and such with more than one magical effect. You can experiment with different combos. Barter, Personality, Race, and Profesion all affect buying and selling. Characters of the same race give better deals, same with professions. Also, Nords are not the best for magic users, Breton, Dark Elf, High Elves are much better.

Bobo
01-11-2008, 10:19 AM
Well I guess I need to raise my levels and get more mullah. I've beaten the Arena now, so I'm not sure if there's another way to do both those things elsewhere. I could just go through the quest or wonder around and see what happens.

I figured the Nord wouldn't be great for magic, but my only long range magic attack is really weak. Gotta work up to something better.

Puck
01-11-2008, 08:36 PM
yeah, you're not likely to do a whole lo of damage with long range magika ... something else to keep in mind (it's almost a fault) as you level, your enemies level too

btw..... what are your majors ?

Bobo
01-11-2008, 11:52 PM
I'll have to check on my majors, I forget.

I'm a freakin vampire now. Looks like I have to find 5 empty grands soul gems and some other junk for this crazy witch to make me a vampire curing potion.

Bobo
01-12-2008, 02:12 PM
My majors are armorer, athletics, blade, block, heavy armor, alteration, destruction.

Is the only purpose of buying a house in this game to store stuff?

Puck
01-12-2008, 02:50 PM
several things you can do to work on leveling your attributes (and ultimately your character)
learn a conjuring spell (low level skeletons for instance)

equip all heavy armor (remove any rmor that isn't heavy)
cast skeleton conjur spell
attack it to aggravate it
block it's attacks and allow it to hit you a few times without causing major damage ... this will raise both your block and armor skills
when you go to repair your gear (by selecting a repair hammer in your inventory) your armorer skill will also increase

the easiest way to raise athletics is to jump will you run around
swimming also raises your athletics
--blade-- conjur more skeletons and whack away

you get the idea
repeat for your destruction and alteration spells
just cast spells while you explore the game

it's worth spending a few minutes each session doing this
yeah it gets a little tiresome but you build the character quicker

Bobo
01-12-2008, 03:29 PM
Alright I'll give that a go. Thanks Puck.

Got any opinion on buying a house and what it's good for?

Puck
01-12-2008, 03:36 PM
buying a house simply gives you somewhere to offload your junk and somewhere to sleep to level up
there's really no benefit to buying since you can "acquire" a few houses via different quests

before it's all over, you might have 1/2 dozen houses full of items

have you joined a guild yet ?
where are you in the "main" quest ?
Jauffrie / Cloud Temple / Oblivion Gates, etc....

Bobo
01-12-2008, 05:03 PM
I've joined the fighters guild, but don't think I've done one of their quests yet.

Joined the mage's guild, just got to be a member at the arcane university and waiting on my staff to be made.

I've found several gates, but didn't know if I should venture in them yet. Guess I should?

The last thing on the main quest was to look for something at a site in the Imperial City at noon.

Puck
01-12-2008, 05:40 PM
at some point you'll want a "Feather" spell to alter encumberance
as most of the goodies in Oblivion are heeeaaavy

the Fighters Guild quests were few and far between
Mages Guild was fairly easy to advance through

Bobo
01-12-2008, 08:30 PM
Doh I may already have that feather spell. I've got a few things that I'm not sure what they are. Either I have to drop weight too often, or I hold on to too much crap

Any side missions you suggest trying? I want to mil the game a lot instead of just blowing through the main quest.

Gunny
01-12-2008, 09:13 PM
I stopped playing it and I never got through the first gate but been playing for ages.

My character sucked.

But I will go back to it.

Bobo
01-12-2008, 10:33 PM
What kinda character was it?

Gunny
01-12-2008, 11:03 PM
I can't remember, I think I made him from scratch.

Puck
01-13-2008, 12:36 PM
I think one of my better characters was a Breton with Blade, Restoration ,Athletics, Mysticism, Heavy Armor, Alteration ,etc.. majors

Bretons are pretty good with magika right off the bat and are pretty good warriors too ... it's real handy to have both

oh yeah Bobo

2 things you'll want to get soon

Umbra .... probably the best sword in the game (and doubles a Soul Trap device)

and there's a SOul Gem Marcus wants you to get early in the game, but DO NOT GIVE HIM THE "Azura's Star" !!!! it is a re-usable soul gem (which are used to trap souls of creatures you strike down - for using to recharge your magical items)
you do not have to give him Azuras Star to progress the main quest, other items can be given instead

Puck
01-13-2008, 12:40 PM
Doh I may already have that feather spell. I've got a few things that I'm not sure what they are.

ultimately , you may want to go to the Arcane Univerisity and enchant some armor with feather spells

I had a
Helmet
Shield
Curaiss
Boots
Greaves
Gauntlets
a ring
and a necklace
all with Feather Enchantments
came in handy on long explorations where lots of Daedric goodies were

Bobo

I'll try this first, but after research, it seems that if I do it now, I'll have to kill her and then I'll be guilty of assault and murder. I guess that's a pretty bad thing right? Get thrown in jail? Lose items?

So you can buy the feather spell at Arcane? I looked it up a bit, but don't have this answer for sure. Do you just use the spell once and the items you have are now always lighter? Or do you have to keep using the spell over periods of time to keep the weight of the items down?

I have a feather scroll spell now (found somewhere), but it looks like it only asks for like 30 seconds, so I'm a little confused here.

the only tip i can give you is how to become a millionaire on Oblivion.
When you heal the vampire king he'll give you a $1000. Ask him again and he'll give you another. He'll never say no so keep asking him until you have enough.

No more pickpocketing.. :woot:

if you do ever get thrown in jail the only items you'll lose are the ones marked in red...everything else you get back

you'll go anywhere there is an "Enchanting Pillar" (or something like that)
it'll ask you for a spell and an item you wish to 'enchant'
the it'll tell you how much it costs
I'm not sure if a scroll will do the trick - you need the spell

Puck

no horse ?
you were given a horse at the very beginning of the game from Jauffrie at the Priory ... if you're anywhere near the Priory, it'd be worth going and looking at the stable to see if your horse is still there .... do not take the ones that clearly mark as stealing.. you can also buy horses from stables

the best horse in the game comes from DARK BROTHERHOOD, Shadowmere. he fights enemies, cannot die and always returns to the Fort if you ever lose him

to get the Dark Brotherhood to approach you, you must kill someone

Read the book and it will tell you to visit the Shrine of Azura. There are 15 Daedric Ruins, each with it's own side quest and reward. You only need to complete one of them and return with the item for Martin to continue the main quest.

Complete one of the Daedric Shrine side quests and take your reward back to Martin at the Cloud Ruler Temple. Speak to Martin about the daedric artifact and he'll ask if you're sure you want to give it to him because it will be consumed in the process. If you don't want to give up the artifact you have, go do another shrine side quest and return with that item instead. You'll be given a list of the daedric artifacts that you possess and will be allowed to choose which one to give. Remember, it is gone for good once you hand it over to Martin so give him something you can live without.

Would it be better to get a staff of frost when fighting in Obvlivion gates? I'm just guessing the frost would damage enemies there more.

I've already got my staff from Arcane, but can't you just buy other staffs that are similar?

Puck
01-16-2008, 05:23 PM
you'll find plenty of staff's throughout
I hardly ever used them ... blades are more "effective"
