View Full Version : Titans Trade For Mike Williams
jfrancis04 04-27-2007, 07:24 PM The Tennessean has an article discussing Michael Turner, but the very last sentence of the article is as follows: "The team has also been in conversations with Detroit about receiver Mike Williams, a first-round pick by the Lions in 2005. Williams caught just eight passes for 99 yards last season."

PickledMidget 04-27-2007, 07:37 PM Chow Power
titansfan9 04-27-2007, 08:31 PM I want him, this also makes me believe that if we draft a WR it will be Ted Ginn...
titansfan9 04-27-2007, 08:32 PM Williams is supposedly about to be cut isn't he?
Gunny 04-27-2007, 10:33 PM I want him to end up in Tennessee. I think he could do well in Chow's offense.

Certainly couldn't do any worse....
Gunny 04-27-2007, 10:39 PM :ha: good point.

i like ur thought process
formerphinfan 04-27-2007, 10:50 PM Just what the Titans need… add a slow receiver that can be PacMan’s partner in crime.
If character counts, the Titans wouldn’t be interested in Mike Williams.
This USC **** needs to stop.

I agree I'm sick of hearing were taking a USC player this because of Chow. This is getting rediculous why don't we draft, sign, and trade for every player Chow has known throughtout his career.
Gunny 04-28-2007, 12:09 AM the whole ONE player we have.
RyansTitans 04-28-2007, 12:09 AM ahh.. idk.
rather have d jax then mike but whatever.
anyways peeps im off to bed. :)) gonna be hard to sleep. Im puttin my Ginn jersey on before I do tho. Hopefully it'll give me good luck.
See you guys in the chat tomorrow. Well some of you.
dgood 04-28-2007, 12:26 AM Hoping for Williams and McCariens becoming Titans tom.!!!!
PAtitansfan53 04-28-2007, 12:29 AM the whole ONE player we have.
Never said we had a lot of them just said that's always the talk come draft time or when there is a USC FA. Chow knows him so they will probably draft him it just gets old when people base everything of Chow knowing some guy.
IMO Williams would work out fine.. Vince needs a big possession WR that goes out 7 -8 yards, finds the hole and turns around, we need to throw it to him 6-7 plays per game.. can you name me a better possession wr out there for a 6th round pick??
dg1979us 04-28-2007, 12:46 AM I think he would work out fine too. It is kind of hard to judge players playing in Detroits offense. He certainly has the potential, and I would would be worth a mid to late around pick.

Perhaps one who actually puts forth an effort

Detroit was 4th in passing in the NFL last year :suspect:

Big deal, stats in the NFL honestly mean next to nothing. They threw for yards last year because they were behind. And sure, Williams seemingly should have had better stats, but the Detroit passing offense was not good. He is young, with loads of potential. I think he is definately worth a mid to late round pick, because you could end up with a stud. And if not, then all we lost was a lower round pick. Worth the risk IMO.

You don't throw for 4,000 + yards just "because they were behind." Martz is an offensive genius and Detroit had a very good offense. Kevin Jones was having a pro bowl type season before his injury, Roy is a pro bowler, hell mike furrey had 1,000 + yards and 6 tds.

I am not arguing that he hasnt underachieved, he obviously has. But that still doesnt mean he doesnt has tons of potential.
And secondly based on NFL.com, Detroit was 7th in passing yards, 13th in TDs, 6th in INTs thrown, second in sacks given up, and dead last in rushing yards, and 21st in scoring offense. So, again, stats really mean nothing, their offense wasnt good. Obviously, Williams has underachieved, but that still doesnt take away from the fact that he is young, and still has plenty of potential. I wouldnt give up more than 4th for him, but I think he is worth a mid round pick. We could end up with a stud player.
And they were also 28th in total defense, which would at least somewhat indicate their passing yards came from being behind and being in predictable passing situations.
GLinks 04-28-2007, 02:09 AM One thing is for sure: Mike Williams is still faster than Dwayne Jarrett.
GLinks 04-28-2007, 02:10 AM And cheaper.
theprizdfighter 04-28-2007, 03:00 AM You have to admit there is an advantage of players coming from USC already knowing the offense.
SEC 330 BIPOLAR 04-28-2007, 03:07 AM I'd be fine with Williams.
theprizdfighter 04-28-2007, 03:09 AM I would be too. Detroit is a terrible place for receivers. Their organization is horrible. Williams needs a change of scenery.

Roy in Hawaii
Mike Furrey 1,000 + and 6 TDs
BMW with less than 100 yards...
I just found this: "Williams seems to be as good as gone here. Marinelli is basically demanding BMW get down to a designated playing weight, 220 lbs, which is just not where the guy should be playing. Martz feels he cannot be effective on the outside in the offense. There is a reason his nickname is BIG Mike Williams. The guy has already gotten down to about 220, he just can't go any further. He used his body to his advantage in college and if he could just get some playing time and confidence, he'd still be able to use his size in the NFL. Unfortunately, M&M are obsessed about playing weights. If M.Williams is getting a shot somewhere in the NFL, it most likely won't be in Detroit. Heck, even Josh McCown got more time at receiver than BMW, and he's supposed to get traded. Mike could be cut sometime this offseason, and definitely will be if the Lions take CJ. The funny thing is, Calvin weighs 239, 10 lbs more than Mike! However, the guy might still have some dynasty value, if only a little, in really deep rosters. He is only 23, and if he can mature, he's got the ability."
Oh yeah, I forgot about McCown (the QB) playing WR over him.
He still has potential if given a shot if he gets his act together
Gunny 04-28-2007, 03:36 AM It sounds like he did what was asked of him to get to 220.
Maybe he had trouble staying at 220 ?
ROCKYMTNTITAN 04-28-2007, 09:21 AM Williams just needs some Vince. I'd love to give him a shot, he's only two years into his career, he could definetaly turn the corner if given the right team situation.

Kind of big news, there's going to be a lot of competition in camp for the 3rd WR slot. We'll see who else we get today at WR, I honestly at this point don't think we'll pull the trigger in round 1. I think we'll go WR in two or lower, unless we trade down.
Gunny 04-28-2007, 09:40 AM Good. I hope he can justify his first round draft status in Tennessee.
He needs to work hard, this could be his last chance.
LazyManJackson 04-28-2007, 09:42 AM Very good news, we desperately need recievers, and I believe Mike can play very well when given a chance...

Most receivers need a few years to get going.
goTitans.com 04-28-2007, 10:06 AM SUMMARY: According to an NFL Network report, the Titans have completed a deal with the Lions for WR Mike Williams. The trade is for an undisclosed draft choice but is speculated to be later-round pick. The deal would reunite Williams with Titans OC Norm Chow. Williams, the Lions’ first pick in 2005, has been a disappointment since being taken 10th overall that season. He had just eight catches last season.

BigRed3 04-28-2007, 10:08 AM Does this change our draft strategy or no?
Starkiller 04-28-2007, 10:16 AM Yes, it lowers our need at WR. It doesn't necessarily mean we won't take one in the 1st round, but it does cut down the need factor. And if nothing else, it might lower the need to take one later on that we might have gone after otherwise.
And I think adding Williams for a late pick, of which we have many, is a good deal.
moose4now 04-28-2007, 10:16 AM Does this change our draft strategy or no?
Not much, I hope.
We still needs WR help beyond this.
I'd still use our #1 on a WR.
therealtitandea 04-28-2007, 10:19 AM I think the Titans are building up squads for different packages.. A big Package, with big wideouts who can receive plus block, and an offense built for moving the ball and possession ... soooo I see alot of different things coming this season
titanbuoy 04-28-2007, 10:19 AM Not that it's a big deal, but I hope the Tacks acquired Williams without having to part with either of their 4th rounders.
edit: I've never been a fan of Williams, but I'm on board :koolaid: ...

Burner28 04-28-2007, 10:21 AM This is a good trade for us. Now we just need 1 WR in the draft.
Gunny 04-28-2007, 10:26 AM Not that it's a big deal, but I hope the Tacks acquired Williams without having to part with either of their 4th rounders.
It would have been a 6th or 7th I imagine. They were going to cut him eventually I think.
Calvin could be a Lion?
Starkiller 04-28-2007, 10:28 AM I can't see the trade being for more than a 6th...
nomoreschwartz 04-28-2007, 10:42 AM Damn...Mike reinfeldt is a freakin animal!!! Will he ever stop with this madness??? The NFL should just give us the next 5 superbowl trophies!

Let's hope so.
johnnybow 04-28-2007, 11:22 AM Hopefully this means we'll draft a DE with our #1 now.
yeah!
GLinks 04-28-2007, 11:30 AM This is really good, but this DE stuff is wait and see.
As far as WR in one, I think this opens up the Ginn possibility a little more.
It also shuts the door on Jarrett I bet.
But if Turner is in the mix, and we end up at #30, I'm okay with that. I'd love to take Anthony Spencer at #30. Or Eric Wright, for that matter. I really don't want our CBs to just get by: I want that squad to dominate. I am still all for taking a top CB.
theprizdfighter 04-28-2007, 11:32 AM Yeah. No Jarrett now.
GLinks 04-28-2007, 11:33 AM I woke up today like, "Is it Christmas yet?"
Mike Williams with any pick 5th-7th is like that one gift some might get to open on Christmas Eve. That's good stuff.
GLinks 04-28-2007, 11:35 AM Hey all you "guests" out there -- today is a great day to jump off the fence finally and join up. Let me guess: some of you read surreptitiously for a year or two. Come on in, the water's fine!
Burner28 04-28-2007, 11:39 AM If were at #30 I want Aaron Ross, Chis Houston, or Reggie Nelson. Then go with like Quenten Moses in the 2nd.
Gunny 04-28-2007, 11:45 AM Come on in, the water's fine!
They want you to put some shorts on. :grrhee:
DCtitan49 04-28-2007, 11:49 AM this could be the best draft in a while for the titans.

It doesn't say its a done deal. It says "are expected." There is a difference.
cld12pk2go 04-28-2007, 12:05 PM I would think it could work out very well for us. If Chow can get him back to his USC form, then it could turn out to have been an absolute coup.
so in other words, this isn't a done deal ?
ZELL22 04-28-2007, 12:43 PM Me likey. He will Perform now, for sure. He has a big ego,he couldn't help not being considered "The Man" in Detroit, he will have that chance here. Lets hope his attaitude will be "I'll show them" type of attitude, instead of, "I can't take this S-it anymore, I quit!!". Time will tell. I just know that we will now go D-end now for sure, thankfully.
TitanJeff 04-28-2007, 12:48 PM Until it goes down, this might need to go to the rumor mill. Anyone hear any confirmation during the draft coverage?

They did talk about the trade to titans but it wasn't confirmed completely...
smili 04-28-2007, 02:36 PM I'm not a fan of the deal...
I was under the impression M.Williams was a hair from being cut, so I hope it wasn't more than a 7th if there is in fact a deal. With Calvin Johnson going to Detroit M.Williams' time was up anyhow.
I also wonder if the trade means we pick up his salary.
If he becomes a problem case here like he was up there we need to cut him loose. We need players with more commitment than he has shown.
Spinnaker 04-28-2007, 02:51 PM well great!

TitanJeff 04-28-2007, 09:50 PM 105th pick overall, 4th rounder from the Raydahs.
Methinks the City Paper jumped the gun and I'm moving this to the rumor thread.
4th Rounder for Williams ?and? McCown ? or did McCown require extra compensation ?
GoTitans3801 04-28-2007, 10:59 PM Apparently they did. I'm disappointed, and surprised at the article in the city paper.
DCtitan49 04-29-2007, 11:06 AM Whats the word on this guy, has the deal been confirmed, or is gotitans.com just pulling our legs?? if anyone has any information post it here please.

dgood 04-29-2007, 11:08 AM Oakland got him and McCown for a 4th rounder.......sort of odd how ESPN, NFL Network, and GoTitans reported he was a Titan.....oh well.
BabyGonzo 04-29-2007, 12:19 PM ESPN stated it was 4th this year and a 1st next year , NFL network said it was just a 4th i wonder who is right ?
i really think that Titans thought that deal was gonna happen and it is the reason why they didnt go after a WR early ..
DCtitan49 04-29-2007, 01:38 PM well i didnt want him that much anyways..
