What an arrogant, poumpous-arse peckerwood.. I would really love to see De La Hoya pull one out just for old time's sake this Sat.... Mayweather is an obnoxious jerk, and very full of himself, but he is as genius a boxer as there has been since Pernell Whitiker. The whole point of the HBO series was to paint Mayweather as the antagonist, and De La Hoya as the good guy. It's a sales pitch, and it works obviously; De La Hoya sells the fights, but Mayweather will make it a masterpiece. Prepare for a close, but unexciting (to average fans) fight. As much as people like you dislike Pretty Boy, he is still the pound for pound best in boxing. De La Hoya is not, and is not built to beat him. We shall see. PaCmAn 4 MvP32 05-01-2007, 08:00 PM Doctor im picking Mayweather......haha BigRed3 05-02-2007, 09:40 PM I really hope this match lives up to its enormous hype, because it is going to be a long time before we see a boxing match of this magnitude again. KamikaZ 05-03-2007, 12:31 AM I really hope this match lives up to its enormous hype, because it is going to be a long time before we see a boxing match of this magnitude again. It won't. Floyd will be brilliant, and Pretty Boy being brilliant is NOT a fun show for casual fans. Sorry guys.. texdude2006 05-03-2007, 12:40 AM Floyd is going to destroy him RyansTitans 05-03-2007, 02:41 AM of course PAtitansfan53 05-03-2007, 04:00 PM Can't wait I'm ordering it on pay-per view. Floyd will win hands down he's to fast and his defense is top of the line. The Golden Boy is a bit rusty and it will show. And by the way you have to have to have a certain ****iness and swagger to be a boxer. If you walk in the ring doubting yourself your going to get your ace handed to you. Look at Ali for example. The Gloat 05-04-2007, 07:58 PM Well, it's fairly obvious who my boy is. But don't decide to dislike Floyd because of the way he's ACTING lately. That's all it is, an act. Sure, he's ****y, but he's not the a-hole he's pretending to be to hype this fight. I hate the way he's talking too, but I know it's all just an act for sales. He does believe he's the best ever, but I understand why he believes that. Every great fighter does. KamikaZ 05-06-2007, 12:36 AM I had the score 116-115 Mayweather. This was EXACTLY how I called it. Mayweather was brilliant against a bigger, more aggressive fighter. It was close on the cards, but Mayweather was superb. Congrats Floyd, you earned it man... RyansTitans 05-06-2007, 12:55 AM That fight was the sh/t Creeping-Cruds 05-06-2007, 03:28 AM Bah, Mayweather did indeed win but he absolutely continues to be a boring fighter to watch - and this fight was pretty darn boring as well.. As it so often happens, an undercard fight (Bautista/Medina) delivered the goods though... The Gloat 05-06-2007, 04:04 AM Once again Mayweather makes it look too easy. Toyed with De la Hoya the entire fight mocking him by letting him win the few rounds he did. He scared me at times, but he always does by letting the opponent throw their hands hopelessly about. I honestly felt really bad for Oscar. It was like watching a sparring session. The Gloat 05-06-2007, 04:08 AM Bah, Mayweather did indeed win but he absolutely continues to be a boring fighter to watch - and this fight was pretty darn boring as well.. As it so often happens, an undercard fight (Bautista/Medina) delivered the goods though... Mayweather is boring to the casual fan. I've always admitted that. But to boxers and people that appreciate the sweet science, he's amazing to watch. Jaw dropping. But yeah, if you like brawling, Mayweather isn't the guy to watch. He's smart. I disagree with the undercard though. Horrid undercard matches, and GBP should really have put someone in the ring worth watching for at least one of the 2 fights. We were all sitting around just hoping they'd end because they were bore-fests. Creeping-Cruds 05-06-2007, 11:18 PM Mayweather is boring to the casual fan. I've always admitted that. We were all sitting around just hoping they'd end because they were bore-fests. Well I don't consider myself a casual fan - been well into boxing since around the time when Floyd Sr. got TKO'd by Ray Leonard. You can call Floyd Jr. an artist etc. - the painting is nice but it's boring as hell to watch the strokes. Jr. is a swift hunt-n-pecker and methodical boxer but he's not dangerous ala Roy Jones a few years back and his bouts are not exciting. Gimme any combination of Hearns, Hagler and Leonard. Now that was great boxing.. Floyd needs to back up his mouth and take the fights with Mosely and the rest.. KamikaZ 05-07-2007, 01:20 AM As a Golden Gloves boxer myself, I relish watching Mayweather watch. He's not exciting to watch, but he is an artist nonetheless. I put him in the same category as Winky Wright or Pernell Whiticker; masters of the art, but not fun to watch to the casual fan... The Gloat 05-07-2007, 03:19 AM Winky isn't very skilled though. Mayweather shows his skill throughout the fight. No matter who you put in front of him, he'll make them look like a sparring partner. Slow, frustrated, and outmatched. The reason he isn't a 'threat' is only due to his fragile hands. He breaks them just about every fight. He had Oscar's legs loose last night when they were on the ropes at one point, and his counters made Oscar stop jabbing because he was getting hurt. Sugar Ray Leonard is my favorite fighter of all time, but if Sugar Ray was as smart as Floyd is, he may have gone undefeated as well. Floyd doesn't want to end up a vegetable like Muhammed Ali. The moment you start fighting for the crowd, or just giving them something exciting is the moment you become vulnerable and WILL begin losing. He's a perfect boxer. I like fighters too, but fighters aren't as impressive - just more entertaining. Big difference. I wish people would watch the fight over again though before acting like Floyd somehow ran the whole night. He stood right in front of him far too often, he just didn't get hit. He even backed in to the ropes to get Oscar swinging wildly. He exchanged a lot, but a lot of times you have to watch him closely because you'll miss a lot of what he's doing. He's brilliant. He'll retire undefeated no matter who else he fights, and will still be healthy, mentally and physically. He's in it for the career, not to make UFC fans happy. And Mosely isn't a fair fight. It'll have the same result as Gatti and DLH. Too slow now, and the main issue is reflexes. If you can't see Floyd, you can't beat him. KamikaZ 05-07-2007, 12:50 PM I agreed totally with what you said, except the part about Winky not being skilled (and SRL part; Hagler is my favorite fighter :ha:). He's clearly a pound for pound top 5, albeit not the same fighter as Floyd. Other than that, great insight cous. OILERTATTOO 05-07-2007, 12:53 PM Winky isn't very skilled though. Winky is an extremely skilled Defensive fighter. He is almost impossible to get a clean shot on and throws straight hard punches out of his defensive stance. I expect his fight with Hopkins to be another yawner though. Both fighters are great, but I expect it to be a slow fight like most of his are. Styles make fights. Of course I will watch the fight even though I do not expect it to be action packed. Floyd is in Roy Jones territory now. He is so fast and accurate that he just dominates his opponent picking and choosing his spots. Only difference is that Roy could take you out with one shot that would come for any angle in a split second. That made him more exciting for me. Floyd's style and skill keeps him from having to show his heart (which is what we all want to see tested on any fighter) and I have never seen him hurt. I thought the scoring of the fight was horrible and should not have been that close. Yes, De La Hoya pressed the action in moments, but Floyd controlled the fight with ease. I should have listened to my heart and not let the hype get to me on this one. My money was on Floyd but I thought that maybe Oscar could catch Floyd with a shot that could change the fight and slow him down just enough to make the fight competitive. I was stupid for even thinking there was a possibility. When you are as good as Floyd is and Jones Jr was, you don't have to take any chances during the fight. If Floyd keeps fighting, which I would be shocked if he stuck to the retirement, someone will catch him sooner or later. How he reacts to that is what I wanna see. Roy could not take a punch very well when his time came and I blame that on the fact that he never got hit for most of his career. For the fan of boxing, skill is only part of it. Sometimes boxers have so much skill that their heart does not get tested. Too bad every fight can't be like Gatti/Ward, Holyfield/Bowe, Mugabi/Hagler, Hearns/Leonard just to name a few. So, who is the guy out there to test Floyd? Later KamikaZ 05-07-2007, 01:08 PM Only fighter I honestly see as a test is Winky Wright at this point, and that's because he'd be fighting a 1) MUCH larger fighter and 2) a fighter with very competent ring generalship and very good defensive skills, with the power to test perhaps (although Wright doesn't have the capacity to knock him out, probably only dismantle an offense). If they could find a catch-weight at middleweight, I would LOVE to see this as a boxing fan. However, what does Floyd still have to prove? I wouldn't have an issue with him retiring at this point... Casual fans would probably kill themselves rather than watch that fight though, but I think it would be amazing. Bottom line, I don't see a single fighter out there who can make it an EXCITING fight for Floyd. I thought Judah could have, because he has power and speed to match Floyd, but mentally, he just isn't there at all. The Gloat 05-07-2007, 04:48 PM Yeah, Winky has the defense, but it's a defense that just about any fighter can use. The turtle-shell. He only started using that defense after he was knocked silly due to the lack of defense and his weak chin. I hate watching Wright mainly because he doesn't do anything special. Not many gifts, just a jab. He doesn't place perfect shots or anything. Just stays in the shell and jabs. It'd be nice if we had an entire field of Manny Pacquiaos, or Rafael Marquezs, but when you're in a career so competitive some guys are just going to play the chess match and win fights doing what they need to do. Floyd treats it like a job, and that's why he's unbeatable. The moment he starts brawling, he becomes Sugar Ray Leonard and then will retire with losses. |
