OK Titan Techies...

So the guy who was going to install my speakers on my new deck fell thru, so I have to start all over. I was going to go with some Phase Techs that he could get, but now open back up to some suggestions (other than Bose ;) ) AND looking for a reasonable installer in the Franklin area.

Any advice would be great!!

They have some cool speakers that look like rocks at Costco.

Here's a stump speaker...

Not sure about the rock speakers on the deck, have to ask the boss. Have you heard the speakers from this company?

if you can handle the cost, I suggest Kef

I was looking at Polk, Boston Acoustic or Mirage. My problem is I want something with some kind of bass response, but I also don't want to get huge speakers. Might be wishful thinking.

I was joking. ;)

I figure it's only a matter of time before they put speakers in gnomes and other lawn ornaments.

I have Polk Audio in the den (a Laserjock recommendation) and am very pleased. Feel free to come over to check it. I don't know if they make anything for the outdoors though.

They have hanging planters that are speakers also.

I was looking for speakers in the shape of those kids with the big eyes in those mexican paintings. AND they move to the sound of the music. Two words....AWE and SOME.

Don't forget the ones which appear like an old woman bent over the flower bed. I never quite understood that one.

Pink flamingos.

if you want speakers that sound like speakers, I'd stay away from the rocks / shrooms.

More like a lot of things than a mushroom... especially since most mushrooms aren't green... reminds me of a stool I had when I was little.

Honestly, the specs on the patio speakers at this outdoor speaker depot look damn good as do the prices. I wish I knew someone that has done business with them though...

VolnTitan

OK...Puck, Laserjock...look at these specs and give your opinion. These are from that outdoorspeakerdepot.com.

http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/apprspp.html

http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/apmasepasp.html

http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/aw650150w.html

The company that actually makes the speakers is Proficient Audio who is owned by Speakercraft.

Any thoughts on the specs would be great because obviously I can't listen to them locally.

Puck

these
http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/aw650150w.html
because of the dramatic price drop and the LOOOOOOONG 10yr WRNTY
I also like the pivoting tweeter design

these http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/apprspp.html would be my second choice simply because they're the lowest price

VolnTitan

I am leaning towards the A650. The only thing is the AP650 are a little cheaper and their sensitivity is better, but don't know if 91db is that better than 89db. And I also love the pivoting tweeter deal so I can always adjust the "sweet spot". I just get leary with the whole "get what you pay for" idea because the price on these is so reasonable considering how unbelievable the specs are on paper.

Puck

then again, it depends on how loud you plan to get with your outdoor action.
if you plan on gettin real loud, then I might not suggest any of these.
3db of sensitivity is not really that big-a-deal with part-time occassional use equipment ...... what receiver are you hooking these to ?

(i will add this : on the 4th, i had a little boom box outside my garage while i was getting things ready.....once a few people showed up, i added a second boom box out my living room window ....... then al of a sudden, my neighbor across the street cranked up something ... it was loud ... loud enough to drown out 30 people in my yard and this thing was across the street ...... it was this http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_PRODUCT_PAGE_EVENT&product=awms_wave_index])

I will be hooking it up to my old stereo which is an Adcom Preamp/Tuner with a seperate amp. Will have plenty of power. I won't be playing it loud or anything, but it is when it is low that I still want to hear some "fullness". Those speakers I posted links for are a little "big", meaning about 11" in height, but I thought with the 6 1/2" woofer, it might provide some low end even in the open.

VolnTitan

Kef are great speakers, but on paper (I know...on paper) the specs are better on the other speakers and they are less than 1/2 the price. I know I am fretting over nothing. I mean, it is outside. Even the best most expensive speakers are only going to sound decent in the great outdoors with nothing for the sound to "bounce off" from.

You young whipper-snappers better keep it down because I'll know when it's cranked up, there is a party goin' on and I'll be crashin'.

Puck

you're right
the Kef's are quite expensive .... there's always eBay

I'll stick by those 650's
but it concerns me that the price wa dropped so low

but hey,...... for $159 .... who cares if they suck , right ?

years ago I bought an MTX outdoor speaker ($99) and actually used it for my center channel. it worked very well. it was a 3-way and had decent range. I got it at HH Gregg. you might wanna see if they have them still. I always prefer to buy something like this in town, just in case I need to return it

VolnTitan

I ordered the 650's. They are actually Proficient Audio speakers according to someone on a Speaker board. Here they are from another company that sells them:

http://www.surroundsolutions.com/cgi-bin/surroundsolutions.cgi/11611.html?prod=Proficient%20AW650

Like you said, $150 for the speakers and $50 for the volume control, can't really miss.

I know squat about outdoor speakers, but I think they'd over some type sub if you really want the lows.

VolnTitan

They have subs, but one is shaped like a tree trunk and the other shaped like a rock and the wife isn't "down" with that....

good luck
and be careful hooking up the volume control
put the outdoor speakers on your B channel
turn the (outdoor) volume control up about 75%
then turn up you receiver to the desired max outdoor output
that way you aren't overdriving the speakers or overtaxing the amp

VolnTitan
07-10-2007, 10:33 PM
Right. Not worried at all about overtaxing the amp, but point taken.
