View Full Version : NBA in Nashville?
just a thought
with the exit of the Preds looming, youd think that a new tenant would be high on the list of things to do
I've always thought basketball would fare better than hockey here, and I caught some talk discussing an NBA team looking to relocate
doing a little research, I found a site listing Nashville as a Top 10 city to either relocate or expand an NBA team to
I'll post a poll on the chances of this happening
BigRed3 07-06-2007, 09:01 PM I really doubt that it happens, but it would be sick if there was an NBA team in Nashville. Even though i've grown to like hockey, I have to say that i'm a much bigger basketball fan.
how would the Nashville SuperSonics sound ?
yeah, I'd go see Kevin Durant
Crash Override 07-06-2007, 09:27 PM I doubt it but anything could happen.
Gunny 07-06-2007, 09:43 PM Las Vegas will get a team before Nashville

You really think that David Stern will allow a team to go to Las Vegas after the debacle that was All-Star Weekend? They don't even have a proper building to host a team for 41 games a year.

What debacle was that?
BigRed3 07-06-2007, 10:20 PM Maybe debacle was a strong word, but if you read articles on it, it seemed like it wasn't the safest place in town to be. Although a lot of that can probably be contributed to the fact that it was the All-Star Game in town. I doubt that there would be that much buzz around just a regular team. Also, there was a little incident involving a certain cornerback.
I read an article stating Stern would not allow a team to be in Vegas as long as betting was open on NBA games
furthermore, there isn't a venue appropriate for the NBA in Vegas - or Oklahoma City for that matter
there is here
PhiSlammaJamma 07-06-2007, 11:10 PM It just doesn't even sound like an NBA town. I will give you credit for supporting those memphis showboats, and the Titans, but nba might be a bit of a stretch for TN.

?
it sounds more like a hockey town ?

Most of which was not basketball related, more high profile people going to Vegas as a result of the basketball, they'd be there because it is a high profile event. Plus basketball does have a thug image.
However Vegas is Vegas any day of the week, probably safer on a non-All Star event weekend, but still millions of people there.

?
you do realize Memphis is in TN right ?

probably safer than any non-NBA event timeframe
ergo : Vegas = bad choice
they can have the All-Star game there and even Summer Camp
but 41 home games ? :ha: no way
DCtitan49 07-07-2007, 12:55 PM Nashville wouldnt get any fan support for basketball, plus Memphis is way to close, and they dont even sell out every game. if a Franchise did come to nashville, it would pick up and move in 2 years.
Other Cities that could get Teams include
Oklahoma City
San Jose
Las Vegas
Baltimore (i would be agaisnt it)
St. Louis
Twin Cities
all those cities are closer then Nashville to getting a franchise...
Hoffa 07-07-2007, 03:06 PM Louisville might be in the running, a huge basketball state, the ABA Colonels was successful there.
There is talk of building a new arena for UL, could be combined.
I don't follow the NBA anymore, but I'm pretty sure Indy already has a team.
BigRed3 07-07-2007, 03:34 PM What i've always wondered was, how does St. Louis not have an NBA team?
Hoffa 07-07-2007, 03:56 PM St Louis had a NBA team, the Hawks, which moved to Atlanta.
They were in the ABA, but did not survive the merger, just like the KY Colonels.

lol, i dont even know what i was thinking, i thought i put St. Louis, but owell....
Memphis is way to close
and ?
it's not like the markets would compete for fanbase
well, you could get some Memphians coming to Nashville
but noone from Nashville in their right mind is going to Memphis
and, believe it or not, it's quicker to drive to Atlanta than it is to drive to Memphis
PhiSlammaJamma 07-07-2007, 07:26 PM ?
you do realize Memphis is in TN right ?
What is your point. Of course I do. I congratulated you on supporting the Memphis showboats and the TN Titans. But I do not think you can support an nba team. Memphis is way below league average for attendance. They are falling apart at the seams despite a new uniform and arena. They didn't even sell out the home opener, and the memphis business journal mocks them.
DCtitan49 07-07-2007, 08:15 PM Memphis is way below league average for attendance
so why would nashville be any different?
What is your point. Of course I do. I congratulated you on supporting the Memphis showboats
why would you do that
Memphis and Nashville are polar opposite cities for the most part
and neither city does much to support the other
But I do not think you can support an nba team. Memphis is way below league average for attendance. They are falling apart at the seams despite a new uniform and arena. They didn't even sell out the home opener, and the memphis business journal mocks them.
again, apples and oranges
you might as well be comparing Jacksonville to Miami
noone from Nashville is driving 4+ hours to Memphis to see the Grizzlies, nor would I expect the reverse
Nashville did a pretty good job of supporting hockey
people here are more likely to support basketball than hockey
you can stop this Memphis talk at any time
DCtitan49 07-07-2007, 10:48 PM if Memphis was at leagues bottom with attendence, why would Nashville be any different??? and nashville fans havent even expressed the slightest want in an NBA team.
if Memphis was at leagues bottom with attendence, why would Nashville be any different???
why would Nashville be anything remotely similar ?
just because they're cities in the same state ?
the two are 200+ miles apart
thats like saying that Tampa and Miami will suffer sagging attendance and blackouts just like Jacksonville - because they're all in Florida... that just doesn't make any sense
these Nashville / Memphis comparisons are unfounded
you 2 must not realize the difference in the cities
Memphis might as well be a territory of Arkansas
the cities really don't get along with each other
and the culture is quite different
one really has nothing to do with the other
I can understand if you and PSJ don't feel that Nashville wouldn't support an NBA team....but do so with a legitimate reason. Using Memphis as an example is not a legitimate reason
My argument is, if Nashville can support professional hockey, why couldn't they support professional basketball
DCtitan49 07-08-2007, 10:38 AM Miami, Tampa, and Jaxonville are all big cities, and Football attendence and Basketball attendence are 2 different things, i think Nashville is smaller then memphis in terms of population, so why would the nba just throw another team into Tennessee, when chances are, the team wont be successful, they will go in debt right off the bat, and it would be just plain pointless.
DCtitan49 07-08-2007, 10:42 AM Memphis Population: 650,100
Male: 47%
Female: 53%
Nashville Population: 545,524
Male: 48%
Female: 52%
Nashville is 100,000 people smaller then Memphis, they havent said they even want a NBA team, so why are we even having this discussion, there are 10 other cities a team would go to before nashville, sorry guys but thats the truth.
it is a hypothetical scenario
hence the "no chance in hell" option
I can tell you this
whenever the Predators leave, the Sports Council will be wanting to find a new tenant ... and I doubt it'll be hockey
I just don't see that building empty
Nashville might not be a big town, but it has a big draw
there's also alot of money in Nashville
we'll see
DCtitan49 07-09-2007, 05:09 PM dude, im promising you, for at least the next 30 years, there wont be a team in nashville.
GoTitans3801 07-10-2007, 12:43 PM Memphis is closer to nashville than Atlanta is. That being said, more people travel from Nashville to Atlanta than from Nashville to Memphis.
Ewker 07-10-2007, 01:09 PM I like hockey, I just didn't like the Preds. I have always been a Blackhawks fan but rarely follow them anymore (because they suck :ha: )
As far as the NBA coming to town, it would fail. Last time they had an expedition game here didn't they have to give tickets away just to get fans in the seats???
NBA=National Boring Association
dg1979us 07-10-2007, 01:33 PM Memphis was dead last in attendence last year, and Atlanta was 26th. There is no way the NBA would put another team within a 3 hour drive of both of those cities. Maybe the Grizzlies would be interested in relocating at some point, but there is no way that Nashville is high on the NBA's list for expansion or relocation.
VolnTitan 07-10-2007, 02:35 PM NBA? No thanks.
DCtitan49 07-11-2007, 08:17 PM exactly my point
The Gloat 07-18-2007, 06:23 PM ?
it sounds more like a hockey town ?
It sounds more like it once was a hockey town.
