I'll go first.

I've got two writers on it. One is mostly for read only I guess, but it can burn at 1x... and the second is a "SONY DVD RW DRU-720A ATA Device"... that's what the computer lists it as. Turns out that it's 16x. They likely come a lot faster than that now. I haven't shopped one in quite some time. I looked on the web. Looks like writers like that aren't anything special. I got this thing 3 years ago. I'm still happy with it even if it is a bargain bin item now.

Hell, it can't match my junior gamer wanna be video card, but dammit, I can run windows vista ultimate without a bunch of bull****. :irked:

Anyone done any hardware upgrades?

Mac house. 20" imac. Little ibook to play with. Used to be my daughter's, but I "inhereted" it when she got a MacBook Pro for college. My wife is using the pc to do internet stuff when it works.

I have few of them (Macs and PCs), but my primary one is a Vista Ultimate PC that built myself this year from parts I ordered from Amazon and NewEgg:

NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT (256MB VRAM)
DVD-RW (don't remember the speed)

I'll probably buy a new Mac laptop later this year after Leopard comes out.

still chugging along with XP on this puppy.

the Mrs. is thinking of upgrading from the Dell P.O.S. she bought 5 years ago. I was somewhat of an AMD fan back in my PC days.

Yeah, I built it right at the beginning of February when Vista came out since my XP machine was about 5 years old. I didn't build it as a high end PC, but as what you might call an upper mid-level (lower high-end?) PC.

AMD can't compete with Intel on pure power, but unless you are going for a high-end PC there's no reason to pay extra for Intel. You get better $$/speed value with AMD.

I don't know how they stack up in benchmarks. My Dell laptop with Core 2 Duo seems marginally faster than the AMD running graphical apps, like Oblivion, yet my AMD seems faster for multitasking regular apps. Both systems still run on XP though, so they're not using their full potential.
