So what's your favorite sports movie..comedy or not?

I have seen Hoosiers and Slapshot mentioned...both good. A few of mine are:

North Dallas Forty
Brian's Song (the original)
The Replacements

There was also a pretty good movie about a college football team..typical story line....QB misses games then comes back to win, running backs mad at each other and some huge white guy on steroids....lol.

The original Longest Yard gets my vote.
Not really 100% a sports movie per se, but Green Street Hooligans is great flick about English Football hooligans..

You guys might have no love for soccer but Escape to Victory is a great sports/war movie.

I also love Robert Redford's Downhill Racer & Pumping Iron. For me it's like coming,I'm coming all the time.:))

Good list Smitty, and thanks Gunny...that was it. We should probably add Knute Rockne (with Ronald Reagan). I had forgotten about Jim Thorpe, very good movie also.

John Frankenheimer's 1966 classic Grand Prix is amazing. If you've got a big screen TV you owe it to yourself to go out and buy the 2006 DVD release of this gem. Spectacular cinematography highlights this film; the racing sequences are simply breathtaking (obviously no CGI, it's the real thing). James Garner in the lead is great (when is he not... the guy is criminally under-rated).

and hey, as an added bonus it's got the legendary Toshiro Mifune in it (attempting english)

Big Lebowski

Never thought of that as a sports movie.. Great flick nonetheless...

That's because it's not. Just because a flick has bowling in it, doesn't make it a "Sports Movie".

Anyway, I wouldn't even call my favorite movie of all time, Raging Bull, a sports movie, even though it revolves around a boxer. The best sports movie I've ever seen is probably Brian's Song (not that TV bull****).

Motorsports would be a different catagory I believe, but yes, Grand Prix was pretty good. Since we went there, some other great ones, including movies with great chase scenes, here are some decent ones.

On any Sunday (old classic about Motorcycling, narrated by Steve McQueen)
Heart like a wheel (The story of Shirley Muldowney - Drag racing)
Vanishing Point
Dirty Larry, Crazy Mary
Gone in 60 Seconds (original was good too)
Little Fauss and Big Halsy (old dirt bike racing movie)
The Road Warrior (Mel Gibson)
Driven (Sly Stallone)
Funny Car Summer
Bullitt (Steve Mcqueen chase scene)
Ronin (DeNiro - some good chase scenes)

Why would it be a different category? "Motorsport" by it's very definition is sport... A film that deals specifically with the sport of F1 has to be considered a sports movie. Not sure how is Dirty Larry, Crazy Mary, Gone In Sixty, Road Warrior, Bullitt,or Ronin qualify as sports films though.... sure they have car chases, but a car chase isn't a sport. If that were the case wouldn't that mean that any film that has a scene with a person running would also qualify. :))

I could have changed that to "gearhead" movies.....you know..anything involving motorcyles, cars, etc. Since there are very few movies that really deal with car racing, I just threw a few in that were entertaining. Take it or leave it. Don't tell me you have never digressed from a subject...if not..find your nearest bar.
