View Full Version : HBO Presents...Flight Of The Conchords
KamikaZ 08-10-2007, 12:35 PM Quite possibly the best television show on tv right now...HBO presents the "4th Best Folk Group from New Zealand", showing the fictional exploits of them trying to make it in NYC. It's a non-traditional comedy with these guy's implementing their songs into the shows. It's very highly reviewed by critics and is becoming more popular.

Creeping-Cruds 08-10-2007, 12:52 PM He may be dead..
he maybe did what?
Although HBO plundered an opportunity to extend the original Tenacious D show 7 or 8 years ago which was basically the same exact show, I do really like FOTC...

Good lord at we know what isn't.. John From Cincinnati. I can't believe they killed my beloved Deadwood for that mish-mash of a show...
titanbuoy 08-10-2007, 03:53 PM I'm sooooooooooooooo out of the loop on this series. Everyone is talking about it and here I sit, completely clueless. I'm not sure it's been shown up here in the Great White as of yet, but it probably has... I'm just slow to catch on at times. :clown:
Apparently that Sopranos is a good show... have you guys heard of it.

Yeah. HBO rarely has poor shows, but this one is definitely one of them. It's positively tragic that Cincinnati was green lighted, while Deadwood was cut.

well it airs right behind Entourage (if that helps any)
btw,..... shouldn't HBO programming be similar regardless of where you receive it ?

We don't get HBO up here. Most of their programming is shown on TMN (The Movie Network). I hate starting to watch a show after I've missed a couple of episodes, so hopefully they haven't started running it yet.

you couldn't get HBO even from a satelite provider ? .... you do have those don't you ? .... the little silver round thingy they stick on the side of your house ? :))

Hey now... I was expecting the profanity filter to edit that for me...oops.
hated Deadwood...
it took a different breed to enjoy Deadwood

Yeah, I'm sure she likes Deadwood too.
HALL97ROX 08-10-2007, 04:44 PM I loved Deadwood. It wasn't cancelled by HBO. The cast demands for money is what got it cancelled. Now you can see Sweargin(sp) in that stupid new Andy Samberg movie and the sherrif is the villain in "Live Free or Die Hard" David Caruso says "Great Career move guys"
Hoffa 08-10-2007, 04:46 PM Yeah, I'm sure she likes Deadwood too.
I don't understand your angle with the picture, but that term is what you referred to me as.
titanbuoy 08-10-2007, 04:53 PM I don't understand your angle with the picture, but that term is what you referred to me as.
If you're at all familiar with Deadwood the character of Al Swearengen refered to everyone as ****sucker. I inserted a pic of him calling you that for not liking his show (my attempt at humor).
Pam Anderson (after her famous tape with Tommy Lee) is the most famous of all Canadian ****suckers. Seemed like another good, humorous response....
Chit Hoffski, we can never get on the same wave length.
Must be a Canadian thing.
Hey Jeff, have I used the term ****sucker enough yet?
Hoffa 08-10-2007, 04:55 PM If you're at all familiar with Deadwood
I'm not. I watched it once. Like I said, I didn't like it, so I didn't watch it. Sounds like I was really missing something  .
I didn't know Pam Anderson was Canadian, but it makes sense. :))
Creeping-Cruds 08-10-2007, 06:39 PM I loved Deadwood. It wasn't cancelled by HBO. The cast demands for money is what got it cancelled.
That, my friend, is not true... I've followed this very closely.
HBO pulled the plug on Deadwood over production costs and ratings projections.
They offered Milch a half season run to wrap up the series and he declined.
I've posted this before but here's some pics pics from my trip to Deadwood. We chose a random date to go, which turned out to be the one weekend when a bunch of the cast was also visiting...

Once eh? Too bad. It was a great show. Powerful stuff.
Everything about John From Cincinnati except the SoCal setting and the John character is "taken" from Deadwood. To bad it doesn't work to a fraction of the percent it did on the former..

Seems like that game would be more satisfying if you chose one of these kids who really freak out about a differing opinion - sometimes they even call you a bigot:evil:

Throwing a label on someone is easier than actually considering another opinion...:))

Hoffa 08-11-2007, 03:23 PM Seriously,
Westerns don't appeal to me in general, and Deadwood did not grab me. Couldn't get into it, just not a big fan of that time period.
John from Cincinnati I like. I like the SoCal surfing culture it's set in. I lived in Daytona for a while in my 20's and was part of a trashy beach circle. Don't like to call it Beach Bum, cause I didn't bum anything, but I drove an old rusted out Chevy van, had a cheap beer bar I hung out in. I had no money, but looking back it was the happiest time of my life so far.
The show is weird, sometimes too weird for me, but I do like it better than Deadwood.

Yeah after 25 years by a Florida beach I'm over it, but that doesn't have much to do with why that show doesn't work for me.. One episode though - for a show like Deadwood - isn't enough to base a fair opinion..
titanbuoy 08-11-2007, 04:20 PM I think if you ever have the opportunity to watch it from episode one, you should give it a shot Hoffa. If only for the amazing Ian McShane alone; I've always liked the guy but his performance in Deadwood was still a revelation.
I checked out your photos CC... it looks like you had an awesome time. I had no idea Dan also played "franks and beans" :) I can't believe I never noticed that. That fight Dan has in the final season was as brutal a scrap as I'd ever watched on film... I was exhausted just watching it.
Hoffa 08-11-2007, 05:17 PM Fair enough, I will give it another shot. I would like to start with episode one, and watch the first season in a marathon.
25 years? Wow, I was only there for 4. I went back to Daytona last month, lots of changes. I'm not really over it yet. I'd like to move back, maybe when I'm older...

I go back to West Palm maybe once a year and it's changed every time. Feels like some weird mix of over-development and 3rd world..
i'm sorry
I thought this thread was about some New Zealand folk singers
not Canadian SockCuckers :eh?:
GoTitans3801 08-13-2007, 05:56 AM Why can't it be about both?
Creeping-Cruds 08-14-2007, 03:04 PM Just read that Flight is being reviewed for renewal by HBO and John From Cincinnati has been cancelled...
avvie 08-15-2007, 03:57 AM So, I just checked out some clips. All i had ever seen before was two guys with acoustics on a stage. Dullsville. But "Muther*Uckers" was hilarious!! Particularly to me because I could never understand why anyone would put a record on the air that had to be edited so much that the sentences were incomprehensible. Big ups to FotC for actually singing that way!
KamikaZ 08-16-2007, 10:48 AM They really do benefit from an actual show, as my introduction to them was similar to Avvie's (their acoustic live show). The show has made their work and material infinitely more humorous.
"Muther*Uckers" was hilarious!!
encore !

I love FOTC. I think the show is awesome although the live sets are better
GLinks 08-26-2007, 01:28 PM Endorsement: Flight of the Conchords is hilarious.
"Most Beautiful Girl...in the Room" -- priceless
Them Newzies are funkified.
Jermaine was doing "Outback" commercials for a while. Those are funny, too.
Their HBO comedy special is worth watching as well.
GLinks 08-26-2007, 01:29 PM Best HBO show of all-time: Dream On
which is basically a funnier "Californication" with David Duchovny that just premiered on Showtime.
titanbuoy 12-19-2007, 10:49 AM Hey! Here it is some 18 months later and I finally had the opportunity to check out the first season of FOTC. Frickin' brilliant. Loved nearly every minute of it.
All of the songs were hilarious, if pressed to pick a fave I probably go with "It's Business Time".
Big thanks to those who recommended it.
Creeping-Cruds 12-19-2007, 10:37 PM Best HBO show of all-time: Dream On
Preposterous...
KamikaZ 12-29-2007, 11:16 AM Best HBO series is either OZ or The Wire. Not even close...
what about the Sopranos ?

HBO has renewed both "Flight Of The Conchords" and "Entourage" for 2008. I'm looking forward to more great shows, funny songs from FOTC.
'Conchords,' 'Entourage' Keep Flying (http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-hborenewsentourageandflightoftheconchords,0,680727 8.story)
Creeping-Cruds 01-03-2008, 03:11 PM what about the Sopranos ?
I rank em as follows:
Deadwood
The Wire
Carnivale
Oz
Sopranos
Sopranos lasted 3 seasons too long and had a few unbearable storylines. Otherwise a great show..
HBO is running the final season of The Wire starting this weekend. Easily the most underrated show in TV history. Absolute brilliance...
titanbuoy 01-03-2008, 03:24 PM Mr Show was the best thing that ever aired on HBO END of discussion. :irked:
http://www.chrisbuck.com/images/FullSizePhotos/MrShow1_b.jpg
:)) :ha:
J/K. I'm just a huge fan of Mr Show. I really enjoyed the first few episodes of "The Wire" but after that seemed to get caught up in nothing but repeats of those three episodes (I eventually gave up). I guess I should grab the first season on DVD. Honestly I suffered the same experience with Oz.
I also loved
Deadwood
Band of Brothers
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Rome
Larry Sanders
... I'm forgetting something obvious.
cajuntitan 01-03-2008, 03:36 PM The best ever HBO show was....
Fraggle Rock!
And that is a serious!!! Not really!
I could agree with Mr. Show, I also loved that show. The lost episode was great.

Hmmmm, part of The Wire's brilliance is that they don't retread themes from season to season and it's an ongoing story vs individual stories and improved with each season.
That's a complaint I'd never expect about that show..
Season 1: The Hood
Season 2: The Docks
Season 3: Local Gov't
Season 4: Public Schools
Season 5: Media
OZ went about a season and a half too long and did get redundant by the end..
titanbuoy 01-03-2008, 10:22 PM Sorry, I explained that poorly. I meant "The Movie Network" (the station that broadcasts the Wire in Canada) aired the first few episodes and then kept re-airing those three episodes for some reason. They did the same thing with Oz. I got tired of tuning in to see only to see repeats so I gave up. I enjoyed the what I saw of both shows (loved that psycho "Adibisi" (?) on Oz). Both are from some of the same creative minds that were behind the show "Homicide: Life on the Street" (Tom Fontana, David Simon). Homicide is my all-time fave network drama, so I was really looking forward to checking them out. Because the HBO stuff is a little pricey to purchase I just haven't gotten around to grabbing them.
Creeping-Cruds 01-03-2008, 11:48 PM (loved that psycho "Adibisi" (?) on Oz).
Man, my wife and I would fight over Adebisi.. He was my absolute favorite character on the show and she outright hated him.. Can't believe Said of all people got the best of him.. I was pissed when they killed off Mr. Ekko on Lost as well.. How the hell did that darn hat stay on his head all the time...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8c/Adebisi.jpg
RIP Simon Adebisi
when do the new Conchords ep's air ?
