Titans 2007 Preview
"2007 will present many challenges looming ahead but one needs to look back but one yr and remember the nightmare that existed in Nashville. There was the Volek fiasco over lying to Chow, Chow pounding him mercilessly, and Fisher shipping him out to SD and bringing Collins in so late.......and then turning the job over to him and not VY because VY was felt to be too green. We had CBrowns agents making a trade request because they thought he was deserving of a new deal............He got burried on the depth chart after a terrible opening game against the new Jet 3-4. We also had Roos flipping to the LT spot and no idea how he'd do and Hartwig telling the media how dysfunctional the lockeroom was. We had AJones show in preseason after a tumultuous rookie yr and we had no WR's outside of Drew Bennett. RB spot was a sore subject. THenry was coming off a terrible yr with a suspension and Fisher showed CBrown who was the boss............... and we had a new QB with many people questioning his pro prospects based on his tools since the media said Fisher and Chow wanted MLeinart. We had a GM in open war with the coaching staff and a fractured lockeroom. The season turned in week four against the Cowboys at home. VY got the start after a nightmare performance by Collins in Miami. The Titans got spanked badly in the first half and we lost our best DL to his temper and terrible behavior. Post game the big story was Jones asking for TO's shoes on the field with TO abliging him. The real story was to unfold the next week. The Titans went up to Indy, a place where they got hammered the last 4 yrs and lost by a point and VY played very well against a good team. THenry showed up that day. The coaches decided to make some changes and the season turned on a dime. Within 4 weeks, VY was the story in the league and the seasons fortunes changed based on chemistry.
This offseason, our only real issue has been the suspension of AJones, which was met with much national fanfare but really made training camp quite serene because there was no distractions. It was all about football. There was record attendance in offseason work outs. The fanbase was a bit perturbed by some offseason moves to let Drew Bennett and THenry leave and seemingly not replace those losses. Some questioned the selection of a S in round one who would move to CB. Well after three preseason games this is clear. Entering 2007 the Titans have less questions surrounding them and less off field distractions. The depth is as good as it was in 99 or 2000. The coaching staff remained fairly intact and Fisher looks to enter the season with a new deal and a promising young roster.
QB...........went from the most questionable areas of last yrs roster to solid in one yrs time. Collins is a bad starter but he will be fine in a pinch. He knows the offense now and it shows. There is not likely to be a third kept because the rest of the roster has some serious talent that the team will want to keep. VY is the unquestioned leader of this young team. The team will go where he takes them. The biggest weakness is that we need to think about getting a QB to the PS to develop
RB............White is the leader for now.......CBrown surprisingly returned because he found there was no green in anyone elses back yd. He could still be the "one" here in Nashville after a solid preseason. CHenry is the new Henry and he looks to have alot of upside but he will be featured on third downs and ST and make a bigger impact in weeks 6-17. The depth is far better than any other time in TN Titan history. I see this area as an upgrade across the board because the talent is great and deeper and the OL is a yr better and cohesive as a unit. Roos is clearly a top 5 LT who is a virtual unknown and Mawae has found the fountain of youth due to VY's ability. Bell is the ideal OG with VY as a QB because of his feet and I see him as a future pro bowler and I think David Stewart is one of the best young RT 's in the NFL. This is the bread and butter for the O. VY is also a serious rushing threat based upon his 500 plus yds last yr in 11 games and 7 rushing TD's.
OL............this is the priamry strength of the TN Titans...........no group is better and they are very good at every spot. There is also deep depth with Amano, Loper and Wand. The new addition of Harris is also needed with Mawae getting up in age. This group makes the running game happen and they will not give up because they adore VY..............they will go the distance to protect the Franchise.
TE...........Flashy it is not.........but Bo Scaife is the lead dog. He has uncanny communication with the franchise and he will put up Wycheck numbers this yr. Hartsock replaces Kinney in two TE sets and has been a real find. He is solid all around but not flashy. Cramer is the guy that is the glue of a team..........he does nothing individually that stands out but he never makes mistakes and he makes plays on ST and when he gets the chance to play on O ( remember Washington last yr)..........He is a football player that you want on your team. Troupe is a major disappointment because he was drafted high and has more talent than any TE the Oilers/ Titans have ever had........to be fair injuries have slowed him...........but I believe our offensive philsophy has changed so much that I think he'd best be served elsewhere. I see him as a possible trade or even cut.
WR............the national media thinks we have nothing here........so do many AFC South fans. I think they are in for a surprise. But those at BSP and here know that losing Bennett was not that big a loss. 46 catches will easily be replaced by BJones who had 27 in 10 games. Moulds replaces Bobby Wades 33 catches. Moulds had 57 catches last yr and that was considered a bad yr for him in Houston. The Titans are already better with these changes. I look for RWilliams and new rookie CDavis to be the third and fourth guys..........truthfully WR 5 and 6 I see on other rosters.......I see two pickups after final cut day. If a young one sticks it will be between Ealy and PWilliams. Personally, I think Ealy should get the nod because of his Scaife like relationship with the franchise. All in all.........this group is better and deeper and more explosive than the 2006 version...........now they have to show it.
DL................this is second biggest question in Titan camp. What do we have. Again folks here raised an eyebrow when I said we were going to be fine here without adding a SRice or any other cast off DE.............Odom and LaBoy can both play but have seen three yrs of adversity and constant injury. This yr their luck turns. KVB is a stable constant force who just needs help. No longer will teams OC's be able to slide protection to KVB. This will allow him to make the plays he did when he had KCarter and Haynesworth on the line his first yr in Nashville. Speaking of Fat Albert.....He is not so fat any longer and that is also a nice change this yr...............he has had a very quiet offseason and reported to camp in the best shape of his life. Remember its contract yr............I expect him to produce serious production because he has alot to prove emotionally mentally and physically to get paid like the top 5 DT in the league. Albert's issues last yr allowed us to find Tony Brown (silver lining).........Tony was a Panther cast off who was alot better than anyone thought including the Panthers. His best spot is DE and he can rotate down low..........but getting him on the edge is a must. The depth at DL is fine with Long and Mahelona and if Simon signs this group is solid. Connover is also a nice player but may get the axe........ Its a lot better than anyone will think. The preseason has shown that the Titans are alot better upfront than anyone thought.
LB.............OLB's is the best in the league. MLB remains the only question on this team.........no one has claimed the spot so I think the first Q of the season will determine who wins it much like our RB spot did last yr. I would expect Fowler to go against the Jags because of the Run first Jag O...........but I see Tulloch getting alot of snaps week two and three. The best news..........both Tulluch and Fowler are stud ST's. The depth here is also the best its been since 2000. MLB play will determine the run D........I think top 15 is likely.
CB..................Everyone predicted a drastic drop off because of the loss of Jones. You all know I said from OTA's we would not miss Jones on D at all based upon what I saw. The CB spot is deeper than it has ever been. Griffin looks to be a great pick and regardless of where he plays he is going to make plays. He proved it in OTA's, preseason games and all TC long. No player was more impressive for his meteoric improvement practice to practice. Finnegan was a great player for us last yr at nickle with 70 tackles and several picks and a TD's returns. He is a playmaker who hits and it 4.33 fast. Harper and Herndon are vets that have seen it all and give tremendous depth. Eric King is a young player who also made his mark all camp long especially at the nickle and dime spots. I predicted early we would not miss Jones at CB and I think people see why I said it now.
S...............SS is locked up..........CHope is probowl quality. Depth is great there with Lowry and Scott. In a pinch Finny and Griffin can play both S spots since both are ex Safeties. LT is the weak link but he has played great this preseason holding of fthe more physical Lowry. Scott could be cut but he has done nothing wrong and will be on a roster somewhere. DNickey is a very avg S but excels on ST and I think will make another roster. Fuller is a real nice player because he can play 5 DB spots.
ST...........this is the area where the loss of Jones will be huge. He was the best ST player in the AFC in my view. Only Hester was better but Jones changed games with his skills as a PR. I think we will get adequate replacement cost with Finny and CDavis. K is solid with Bironas who had the best camp of any K I have personally seen in Nashville. He has confidence now with a yr of experience and he needed to be pushed with the competition he go tthis TC. Hentrich is the best directional punter in the league and remains quite viable and is a weapon in his old age.
Coaching............Will Fisher let JS unleash the dogs on D? That is the question ...........but this scheme has always required great outside man coverage to really get its full effect...........this is the first yr since 2000 that the Titan D has that..............I think KBulluck has a chance to make Def player of the yr if they let him go wreck havoc. On O.........Chow needs to let VY grow............he will have ups and downs but he will be a matchup nightmare for 80% of our opposition.
The schedule is 4th most difficult but I have broke it down to FA losses and additions and I think we face more bad run D's than most teams. this plays to our strength............The games that will be the toughest for the Titans will no longer be the Colts............It will be Jax and SD. The rest of the games I think are going to be very doable for this roster..............I personally see an 8-8 or 9-7 record...........but the quality of the wins will be much better than 06 and the losses likely wont be as harsh as we saw last yr especially starting the yr. The upside is very high if the D comes to play and VY goes on to progress the way I think he will ...................but we could be worse if the run D faulters. Any injury to VY will cripple this team but I think we can sustain hits to many spots without missing a hitch unlike the Colts."
