View Full Version : Movies that make you cry
Starkiller 11-08-2007, 12:18 PM Even real macho guys can be brought to tears from time to time. There was a story on Digg with 25 movies that fit this category (though many of them are debatable).
So, my question is, what movies make you cry? Even specific moments (hopefully no spoilers will be posted).
For me, I'd say the ends of Saving Private Ryan. Also the end of The Iron Giant ("Superman").
titanbuoy 11-08-2007, 02:18 PM Tons of films make me cry. Sometimes it’s the story on screen and sometimes it’s simply the sheer genius of the filmmaker that moves me.
I had a really awkward moment on a first date with a woman who eventually became my fiancé (and eventually became my x-fiancé). I took her to the film “Love and Basketball”, and honestly was pleasantly surprised at what a quality flick it was. At one point the romance in the film begins to disintegrate, and at that moment the song “Fool of Me” by Me’Shell N’degeocello comes on. It’s a very special song to me, a stunningly raw and beautiful track by an artist who I admire greatly. For it to come on like that, unexpectedly at an already emotionally charged moment in the film had me sobbing like a 5 year old. It was a total drag… here I was on a first date with this uber-hot redheaded Hungarian goddess and I’m spilling like Michael Irvin at the HOF.
I think that’s the highlight of my weepy movie experiences, but as I said for me getting a little teary at a movie is a regular occurrence. I’ve never really thought about the frequency but I’m sure once every month or two I’m apt to be getting a little verklempt at the hands of some skillful filmmaker.
And yeah, last year I picked up a DVD copy of Love and Basketball and I’ve yet to make it through a viewing without getting misty. :clown:

Childress79 11-08-2007, 04:28 PM Phenomenon 1996 Travolta/Robert Duvall movie.
I found this film very moving it just builds & builds & I just didn't see the end coming. I cried like a baby.
I watched an old Jared Leto movie 'Prefontaine' for the 1st time last week. I was ignorant to the story of Steve Prefontaine before watching the movie. I was teary eyed at the end.
Twelve Monkeys is one of my all time favorite movies, moves me to tears at the end every time.
Another little known Bruce Willis movie is In Country. Moving story about the legacy of Vietnam veterans.

:ha: j/k I've never seen it.
The last time I got misty at a movie was not from where I would have expected: The reprise of "In Your Eyes" from Peter Gabriel's concert film Growing Up Live. "RAAAAAAACHEL Z!!" Powerful delivery, as was that version of "Secret World".
I can't remember any others now, though I'm sure there were many...but I'm not sure that they count: when I lost my fiance and little girl, I was triggered by seemingly insignificant scenes/dialogue, and I would turn to jello. There were some songs that I couldn't handle either, so I went on a media fast; it's only been relaxed by 10%, and I have no TV. I rent suspense/horror movies.
GoTitans3801 11-09-2007, 09:14 AM That list is really good, Murse.
Childress79 11-09-2007, 09:19 AM You guys seem to have missed that Starkiller started this thread as a result of reading the digg article.
Starkiller 11-09-2007, 10:57 AM Yeah, that was the one I saw on Digg.
GoTitans3801 11-09-2007, 12:52 PM Hadn't seen it before the link was posted though. I'm not a regular reader there.

Man I can't believe I've heard of that movie for years and still haven't seen it.
Braveheart will choke you up bad a few times.
Saving Private Ryan of course is a tough one, and Forrest Gump is another Tom Hanks tear jerker.Green Mile too....Hanks is just going for the heart lol.
Stand By Me was a bit sad.
Anyone remember The Outsiders? Man that ending sequence was pretty brutal.
The ending of LOTR : Return of the King....another tough one.
And now for a silly child moment, but I wasn't the only kid in the theater with a wet eye when Optimus Prime died in the original Transformers cartoon movie.
The ending of LOTR : Return of the King....another tough one.

Yeah a bit sad at the end. That was a cool, weird lil movie.
PickledMidget 11-12-2007, 10:22 PM You guys have failed to list the ulitimate "guy cry" movie.
My wife has surveyed several guys and every one of them cried at "Rudy".
Tell me I'm wrong!
Tears of joy? Eh those are hard to come by. I don't think I felt like shedding a tear at the end of Rudy, maybe felt like hootin' and hollerin' :ha:

Deuce Wayne 11-15-2007, 03:51 AM every time I think of movies that get me teary, this one always pops in to mind, and I can't believe that I'm not alone. (seeing as how it's uploaded to youtube lol)

There are tons of them though. Crash has plenty scenes that get me. That Walk to Remember movie, when Mufassa dies on Lion King, ahh, there are tons more but I can't think of any at the moment.
GoTitans3801 11-15-2007, 08:52 AM Oh man, I'd forgotten Homeward bound!
Starkiller 11-15-2007, 09:41 AM Where the Red Fern Grows got me when I was growing up.Ditto. Might be the only book that has ever made me cry.

New York Doll
Just watched it again this week on Cinemax. About Arthur Killer Kane of the Dolls, who seemingly never recovered from the band break up in the early 70's. Lived a miserable 30 years holding on to some imaginary feud with David Johansen only to find out in the days preceding a long awaited reunion show that they were still friends. The ending to the story though is very sad...
Carpy 11-17-2007, 09:31 PM Stand By Me was a bit sad.

I was a big fan of that book and Rumble Fish as a kid. Don't think I've seen the Rumble Fish movie though.
The Outsiders had one of the best casts for upcoming stars ever I guess.
Creeping-Cruds 11-18-2007, 07:15 PM Borat... when he's having that hotel room brawl with that hairy ******* I just can't contain the tears - FROM LAUGHING MY ARSE OFF!

The movie didn't do the book or the cast justice though. Too bad, AMAZING BOOK.

Rumble Fish you mean? It's be many years, but I recall both of those books as being top notch.
Gunny 11-19-2007, 04:59 PM We read Outsiders in high school, it is a quality book. Need to re-read that.
