what is this ST prequel you speak of?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0796366/
Great cast so far.. Simon Pegg as Scotty? Awesome!

Should be noted that JJ Abrams is the same guy putting out that weird as of yet untitled movie that everyone was on about here for a while...

I just hope it's more substance than hype.

The great cast is a good sign.

I have a lot of faith in JJ to write a good script. I don't think I've ever seen one of his projects that I didn't like.

It's like Joss Whedon without the string of idiotic network cancellations...

Yeah what difference a ratings hit can make.I 'm baffled as to why Battlestar Galactica has lasted so long when shows like Angel & Firefly get canned.

It helps that BG is a friggin brilliant show on a lowly cable network. That show will run its course and then some...

Hmm...not sure what that means. Next season is the last....BSG has a finite storyline; the last season sucked, to boot.

I guess everyone finally got over 01/18/08, and decided to just wait it out and see what the damn monster is.

EDIT: There's a new trailer for it, and the movie is now officially titled Cloverfield.
http://www.worstpreviews.com/trailer.php?id=966&item=2

It's a very Godzilla-ish monster, though it seems not to be the central character.

I don't get the fixation with trying to find out everything about a movie before it's come out.

I understand that the mystery created around Cloverfield is intentional & it's building a desire to see it. Sometimes if you go into a new movie knowing erverything about it it can dampen the experience for you.

i love the return of the 80's Cylons and their Raiders

I would just like to see them try something innovative with the movie. Forget all the treckies. Go for the blockbuster and try something different in the space genre like Aliens did. Or go for some T-3 type non stop action. Or even some space opera would be a nice change for the Treks. Just something totally unexpected would be nice rather than the same old thing. The Trek movies really got dull for me. It's time for them to take it to another level like batman did. Go darker. something. Give me something I can latch onto.

Man i really liked Razor.

I've loved BSG. I'm suprised people think the third season sucked.

BSG has done so much right, Good character development (even for non-major characters), good special effects, bold chances with the storylines.

I was skeptical the way the second season ended, but I thought they did a great job with the story in the start of the third season. I'm skeptical again with the way the third season ended, but so far I've liked what the writers have done so I'm faithful that the 4th season will be great. I just hope it leads to a big screen motion picture!

My question about the prequel, is it really a reboot? I've read that in some articles but I don't see that from anything i've read script-wise.

Sounds like they are being true to the story from enterprise and the original series. I'm interested to see how it plays out, but I like that aspect of it. The casting will determine how the movie pans out, but I like Quinto as Spock.

The only thing that seemed untrue to the original series was having Chekov on the ship so early when he wasn't supposed to originally be around when Kirk took over the enterprise. :geek:

Good god I hope we don't end up with AVP-like nonsense.. There is enough mindless Hollywood action forced on the public every year already.

Star Trek movies have been mindless and boring. They saved a whale one time. They need to amp it up a bit.

Actually, I didn't...I have no TV  I have to buy DLs from iTunes if I want to see something....which is EXTREMELY rare. Oceanic Time Warner Cable has pissed me off in a huge way, so I returned their equipment with the universal symbol of brotherly love.:))

Kane: A symbolic name. Cain killed Abel; Admiral Kane was killed in Mutiny on the Bounty

Cloverfield: Judging from clues, I'm guessing that this is the name of a government/military project that went awry. See the beginning of the second trailer, linked in this thread.

Granted Star Trek, is SciFi-Action, but I will vomit if I see Spock spinning into some idiotic wire-fu moves. "Mindless" is the correct adjective for the action Hollywood cranks out these days. Who'da thunk'it that TV would be smarter than the Movies..
There are books, and there are comic books. Hollywood can't differentiate the two so the book readers suffer..

I didn't realize until just now, one of the bigger problems the franchise probably faces in the theater is that the trek characters are so closely tied to the actors in the series. Very few action movies are so closely tied to the actors. Anyone can be batman or spiderman for example. But nobody can just be captain Kirk. Unless of course, you do a prequel. But even so, the actor who plays that role has to nail down the mannerisms to pull it off.

This does remind me how much I liked Starship Troopers. My Father actually wanted to go see this at the theater, so I went, and thought it was the dumbest sci-fi movie ever when I saw it, but for some reason I watch it over and over and over again and I've come to appreciate the risks they took with it. Now I am playing the game Mass Effect and see all kinds of references to that movie. The movie has grown on me quite a bit. It can be pretty funny and innovative now that I see what they were trying to do.

I swear, I'm not understanding the disappointment with Cloverfield. It's exactly what is was proported to be, and it's an excellent example of what it was proported to be.

It helps to know that the people whom I know that were unimpressed are the same ones who get upset at Wheel Of Fortune contestants.

There is nothing brilliant about the movie. It was marketed extremely well, which got people interested.

Otherwise is it a movie of halves. Half a monster, half a plot, half the length.

What is so good about it? That you kinda see something in the dark tear up a city for 80 minutes, that cannot be stopped and then you have to read up on who, what, why and where the monster is what it is on google.

Sorry but that isn't worth paying $15 to see at the movies.

Creeping-Cruds
01-27-2008, 09:13 PM
then you have to read up on who, what, why and where the monster is what it is on google.
Pretty sure that was the point.. Big monster stomps NYC... What more do you need to know? Not saying this movie was that good, but it's still just a monster movie..
Want more out of a CGI monster flick go rent THE HOST...

Sorry but that isn't worth paying $15 to see at the movies.
Maybe, but neither is the Spiderman3/Pirates3/Fantastic4/Rush Hour3 nonsense that everyone seems to love so much...

What is so good about it? etc, etc..
You have to understand that it's a movie with a monster in it, but it's not a monster movie. The monster is not the focus or the main character, just like James Cameron's Titanic wasn't about a boat sinking. Both the monster and the ship are secondary background characters which create a backdrop for the story.

The way it's made is awesome. It does a very convincing job of having you feel that everything that is happening is all live and in real time.

In a related subject, I never wanted to see Brokeback Mountain, but it's not because I thought it was a movie about Heath Ledger getting his salad tossed.

I knew the next generation show used at least a couple physicists as consultants to make sure it was fairly accurate with allot of the tech based on theoretical ideas but the movie is going to use the same. It should make for a decent movie and believable.
