View Full Version : In this corner...XBOX 360, in this corner Ps3
Big TT 12-01-2007, 06:08 AM I am looking to buy my first (well since college anyways) gaming system. I teach high school and made the mistake of asking my kids for their opinons about which would be the best purchase between and got very little in the way of useful info, it seemed to be split about 50-50 between and each side was very passionate about which one was best. But what I took was that it depends on what types of games you like to play. I will certainly purchase Madden, I also have played Halo and liked it, so I guess the "shooter" type games would also be on my list. So give your honest opinions for me, but don't make me call the principal down here to break up a fight.:grrhee:
always buy hardware to match the software. Find your killer app and then get the system best for that game.
Gunny 12-01-2007, 07:28 AM If you like Shooters, get a 360.
I think the PS3 has a better variety of games.
better variety ? you have got to be kidding
one thing to consider is your current equipment and your needs
if you happen to have a 1080p set and like to watch movies, then go ahead with a Ps3. I'm not sure what gunny means by variety .... there's hardly any variety (of quality anyway) on the Ps3 .... there's much more variety on the 360
if you happen to want to play more than a small handful of games, then go ahead and get a 360. there's a good mixture of racing games, 2 of the best FPS anywhere, a surprisingly good selection of RPG games and plenty of action/adventure. now that the new chipsets and heatsinks are installed, we may have seen the end of the RedRingOfDeath

Gears of War > Resistance (FPS) Bioshock/Halo3 -360exclusives
Mass Effect > Folklore
Forza/PGR4 > Motorstorm
something else to keep in mind is that there has been plenty of documentation that cross platform titles (Half-Life2:Orange Box most recent example) perform better on the 360
something you did not mention and not sure if you're even considering it, but if you have kids you should consider a Wii
----- note from an owner of all three
without a doubt, I am more in tune with the current offerings on the 360. there's just so many more titles and the top games are of higher quality
-I do, however, covet the Ps3 as a fantastic DVD/BluRay player
-the Wii is a blast with certain games. Mario Galaxy is destined to become one of the next best games of our time. Zelda, Metroid, Resident Evil 4, Zack and Wiki are all top notch games ... however, it may be easier to find Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq before finding a Wii for Christmas

just sayin ...... it's something to consider
Gunny 12-01-2007, 06:28 PM Please. Outside of Mass Effect you have Bioshock, Halo and Gears of War. All FPS.
Microsoft couldn't produce an adventure game to save it's life.
It's racers are poorer Gran Turismos.
RPGs - pfft, Final Fantasy XIII exclusive.
Metal Gear - exclusive.
Uncharted - What does Microsoft have?
Have anything like Warhawk? You sure don't.
Heavenly Sword - nope
God of War - nope.
LittleBigPlanet - Ha, not even close.
Go on over to the X-Box reviews and what do you see in the genre catergory - Shooter, shooter, shooter.
Gunny 12-01-2007, 06:31 PM something else to keep in mind is that there has been plenty of documentation that cross platform titles (Half-Life2:Orange Box most recent example) perform better on the 360
Actually, that would be EA laziness. Not PS3 problems.
Also consider developers say PS3 is only using 10% of it's possible performance, 360 uses a lot more. So think long term. Just saying.
And also consider the crapbox has a 33% failure rate, so if you wanna go through the hassles of getting a new console every 5 minutes, go right ahead.
Then there is the Halo 3 problems. The game doesn't even work.
5 of the 8 games you mentioned aren't even released yet
Gunny 12-01-2007, 06:42 PM PS3 is a long term investment. (well all consoles are).
By the time the PS3 has been out the same amount of time the 360 has (about 2 years now). Those games will be released.
And they are all different.
I think the choice should be made with the actual games as the biggest consideration. You can watch Puck and Gunny argue it out again :slap: but at least you'll get some game ideas :ha:
I'd take some time to look at what games you like, and think you'll like. Then see if they are on both systems, or just one. It's not a very easy decision imo. I have the 360 and will probably get the PS3 someday :bonk2:
Gunny 12-01-2007, 06:46 PM ^ Like I said, if he likes shooters, get a 360.
Actually, that would be EA laziness. Not PS3 problems.
I never said it was the Ps3's fault
the fact remains ... Ps3 ports are inferior to their 360 brothers
the situation was similar with ps2 ports
Also consider developers say PS3 is only using 10% of it's possible performance, 360 uses a lot more. So think long term. Just saying.
that's due to the complexity of coding, which will result in fewer titles released overall
And also consider the crapbox has a 33% failure rate, so if you wanna go through the hassles of getting a new console every 5 minutes, go right ahead.
the new chipsets and heatsink replacements should reduce that figure to single digits
Then there is the Halo 3 problems. The game doesn't even work.
I can't wait for my Legendary Edition Halo3 to arrive
if it doesn't get past the point where I got it stuck when I rented the standard edition, I'll be calling MS for a new console
Gunny, you can't convince me of anything on this topic
I've got both of the consoles, and the 360 gets MUCH more work
I haven't had a single issue since my launch-box was replaced
^ Like I said, if he likes shooters, get a 360.
That's just an oversimplification. There are many good sports, racing, and rpg games. Some exclusive, some not.
Gunny 12-01-2007, 06:57 PM I'm not trying to convince you of anything.
Those are the facts.
What you play more is irrelevant.
PS3 has a better variety.
360 has shooters.
It's the way it has been with Sony and Microsoft.
By the way, outside of EA ports, what ones have been inferior?
And developers will figure out the so called complex code (except EA who just don't care).
Gunny 12-01-2007, 06:59 PM That's just an oversimplification. There are many good sports, racing, and rpg games. Some exclusive, some not.
It's a fact. Look at the 360 top reviews, most are shooters.
Non-exclusive games are really moot in this type of discussion as you can get them on both systems.
Uncharted
8.0
http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/uncharteddrakesfortune/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=tabs&tag=tabs;reviews

Heavenly Sword
8.0
http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/heavenlysword/review.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=tabs&tag=tabs;reviews
"skilled players will probably finish the game in a little more than six hours, and it probably won't take longer than eight hours for anyone else. "
"So short it can be finished in an afternoon - Not enough variety to the bad guys' design and attacks - Some bosses feel a little cheap."
not very good investments for consumers
Gunny 12-01-2007, 07:34 PM Uncharted - Game ranking 89%
Heavenly Sword - Game ranking 81%
Get a worldwide view instead of one view.

And Great games are good investments. Halo and Gears of War are even shorter than Heavenly and Uncharted. If you want a game thats last ages, get Tetris.

OK, that's enough
I just wanted to show you that there is PLENTY of variety on the Xbox 360
I intentionally omitted all shooters from this list
including Shooters would add excellent games like
Bioshock
Gears of War
Halo 3
Prey
Perfect Dark Zero
Undertow
-to name a few
Gunny 12-01-2007, 08:12 PM
It's a fact. Look at the 360 top reviews, most are shooters.
The fact is what you are saying is definitely an oversimplification. There's more to it than just one line of "if you like shooters, get this one, if you like better variety, get that one". Yes the 360 is top heavy in shooters, but that does not mean that the only good games on the 360 are shooters. There are many other games that got good reviews that are not FPS's....and of course Puck has done his duty of pointing them out :ha:
Non-exclusive games are really moot in this type of discussion as you can get them on both systems.
They are not moot in the context of what I was originally trying to say. He should find games he likes or thinks he'll like. Then if he finds out that some are not exclusive to one system, then that game doesn't have to sway him either way.
Gunny 12-01-2007, 08:37 PM Yes the 360 is top heavy in shooters, but that does not mean that the only good games on the 360 are shooters.
I never said the only good games are shooters on the 360. The best ones are, with the exception of Mass Effect.
There are many other games that got good reviews that are not FPS's....and of course Puck has done his duty of pointing them out :ha:
*sigh* They are good games. Not 'killer apps', not must get games. Every system has games rating in the 8s that are of different genres.
The great, killer games. The must gets are shooters.
Not many are of a different genre, unlike the PS3. And the PS3 has a lot more coming.
Heck anyone can get a game of any genre, all systems have them. Whether they are worthwhile is another question.
Ok Gunny, so games that have a rating of only 8-8.9 are not strong enough to consider for the decision on what system to get? That's is too limiting.
And besides, just going by someone else's rating is a bit limiting too. I know it's not easy to figure out if a game will be to your liking, but going by someone else's scores alone isn't the bottom line to me. I've read up on games, played them at friend's houses, and/or rented them to try and get a better idea if they were worth buying.
Gunny 12-01-2007, 09:31 PM I've read up on games, played them at friend's houses, and/or rented them to try and get a better idea if they were worth buying.
Shouldn't that be the answer the to initial post.
Look, I am not saying the PS3 is better than the 360, I am just saying the killer games on the 360 are mostly shooters. While the PS3 ones are more randomised.
KamikaZ 12-01-2007, 10:30 PM I'm gonna make this REAL simple:
Get a 360 IF:
-You want more variety, more exclusives in your gaming library.
-You want a more robust online experience, and are willing to pay a monthly fee.
-You have a preference for HD-DVD movies.
Get a PS3 IF:
-You are a more casual online gamer (as I am), and are willing to get a more stripped down but FREE internet experience.
-You enjoy Blu-Ray products.
-You want a very high performing, durable, extremely well made console.
-You want to play Metal Gear Solid 4.
Pretty simple at this point.
*sigh* They are good games. Not 'killer apps', not must get games.
the point was that you had said that the 360 had little variety
I'm merely demonstrating that their is ample variety
with a little patience and some simple organizational skills, I can show you how to get BOTH ... for FREE (well, not entirely free)
the wife participated in 2 online programs that netted us a 360 for about $60, and a Ps3 for about $110 (and each could have been less) and no, these were not the campaigns where you have to get a bunch of referrals
why settle for just one

How? I almost pulled myself to do one of those websites to get a PS3 the other day, but I had to get all of the referrals and crap... and I just lost interest.
Gunny 12-01-2007, 11:06 PM the point was that you had said that the 360 had little variety

All consoles have variety. Whether they are good, great or not is a different issue.
Shouldn't that be the answer the to initial post.

Sure, he should do research. That's why the over generalization answer you gave him didn't make much sense ;)
How? I almost pulled myself to do one of those websites to get a PS3 the other day, but I had to get all of the referrals and crap... and I just lost interest.
there's probably a dozen or so sites that do these
you will come across a few that do not include referral requirements
for the 360 we used Online Reward Center
for the Ps3 we used Ps34free
it took a few weeks
VolnTitan 12-02-2007, 10:18 PM I believe the online Reward Center requires you to sign up for stuff....
^ that's the whole point
you sign up for a few 'free trials' of products
try something out ... cancel it
that's why keeping track of it all is important, so you don't get automatically extended in auto-renewals
we did stuff like Blockbuster Rentals
tried out some vitamins
checked into a book club
Netflix
Columbia House
stuff like that
there's usually 3 tiers, each ascending in complexity or price
but if you're careful in what you choose you can get through it with very little money invested
to date, we've acquired :
an Xbox 360 - less than $75
a 60gb Ps3 - less than $150
a Canon EOS 20d Digital SLR - less than $250 (a $1200 camera)
and our most recent acquisition -
a 2.2ghz "Santa Rosa" MacBook w/ Windows Xp (via Parallels) pre-installed ($1500) for less than $400 (through shop.free.pay who we DO NOT recommend using as this was a painful drawn out process ... but hey, a $400 MacBook was sweet)
and the Mrs. is currently working on some $500 Visa cards
she finished one in about 3 hours the other day
they're going towards a new iMac for the Puckster :))
trust me it works
just be sure to read the sites Terms and Conditions first
and set up a 'dummy' E-mail account for all the influx of spam
-DO NOT use your regular email account-
bigtitan53279 12-02-2007, 11:48 PM i missed these threads.
it's a moot point really
the Wii is whipping them both
Gunny 12-03-2007, 03:50 AM It wasn't even a PS3 vs 360 argument in regards to what is better.
One day though...:brow:
I also have played Halo and liked it, so I guess the "shooter" type games would also be on my list.
if Shooters are one of your preferred genres, than there's quite a nice assortment on the big white box

Big TT 12-04-2007, 05:26 AM Gunny I was just get ready to post, no really. I have ordered a X Box 360 , should be here in a few days. I also ordered Madden, Halo 3, and Call of Duty 4. I am pretty new to the gaming stuff, only really played a few times with my kids, but I am looking forward to it.

Which 360 did you order? The $349 one will play older games, so you can also get Halo 1 and 2 cheap if you haven't played both.
