View Full Version : Life After People
Creeping-Cruds 01-22-2008, 10:55 PM Did anyone else catch this on The History Channel..
Very interesting 2 hours documenting how things would unfold if humanity just ceased to exist all at once.. 1 Day, 10 Days, 1 Year, 25 Years and so on..
Pretty amazing that experts predict there would literally be no trace left of human existence after 1000 years - only a few things like Mt Rushmore would survive the elements. Even the Hoover Dam would deteriorate and crumble..
Stuff to ponder...
bigtitan53279 01-22-2008, 11:14 PM damn, i was looking forward to that. i guess i missed it
:(
Starkiller 01-22-2008, 11:18 PM It will be on again 100 times by the end of the year.
Gunny 01-23-2008, 02:25 AM Side note - I've never understood the thought process on saving the planet by eradicating humans. No one would ever know how it turns out and no one would be around to appreciate it.
the tree huggers just want to eliminate the "bad" humans. Tree Huggers are "good" and if you disagree with them then you are "bad" and should be eliminated

Well..except for the film crews from Discovery and The National Geographic channels...:ha:
titanbuoy 01-23-2008, 08:31 AM Thanks for the heads-up CC, I'll keep an eye out for it (sounds fascinating). As Starkiller said it's apt to be repeated ad nausea so I'm sure I'll be able to find it.
Does anyone here watch the show American Experience on PBS? It's somewhat hit and miss but the last two have been really interesting. The first was on the life and times of Andrew Jackson (who had a residence called the Hermitage right there in Nashville) and the one this week was on the lobotomy craze which hit the US in the 1940 and 50's (I was pretty much in the dark on this, so it was a real eye opener).

This particular show has no moral theme - just thoughts on what would happen if man was no longer.

100% certified tree hugger here and I have no interest in eliminating any humans, just the behavior that destroys the environment for future generations and other species...
PhiSlammaJamma 01-23-2008, 11:46 AM I will watch it, but you gotta think there will be lots of artifacts preserved. Bones. Structures. Anyway, sounds interesting. I will watch. Chelsea Clinton in 2036, there is a chance of total destruction.
Starkiller 01-23-2008, 03:21 PM John Stewart interviewed an author who wrote a book about this a few months ago on the Daily Show. Is this just based on the same book?

this would be a good place for that Washington song to be linked too
WASHINGTON! WASHINGTON!
Very neat show. I guess that's about my favorite type of tv show, the educational type I guess you'd call it. I needs sum edumacatin.
The Universe is a realyl cool series that comes on on Tuesday nights at 8 central....believe it's the History Channel.
yes The Universe is a good show.
FWIW Neptune is one whacky planet.
Starkiller 01-23-2008, 11:02 PM Yeah, I have a bunch of episodes of the Universe recorded in HD and I've been watching them occasionally (and adding the new ones). Great stuff.
PitBull 01-24-2008, 12:16 AM damn, i was looking forward to that. i guess i missed it
:(
I downloaded it from minninova.
Watched half of it last night in bed on my iphone. Fell asleep 30 minutes through it.
Can't wait to watch the rest.
Gunny 01-24-2008, 04:31 AM I'd like to see a Planet Earth type documentary on the Universe (or the Solar System).
(I am guessing this Universe is that type of show)
Big TT 01-24-2008, 04:54 AM I watched it last night. Sort of interesting and with no moral message at all, just what would happen to all our "stuff" as certain amounts of time passes. 1 day, 1 year, 10 years, 50, 100, 200, 500 ect. Basically sooner than you might think nature starts to erase our "stuff". In a 100,000 years they speculate the only human thing left you could id would be mount rushmore. BTY the last city with lights would be Vegas, thought that was cool.:grrhee:

He'll save the children, but not the British children!
I can't find it on YouTube anymore. Here's a load of other junk, though, that will cause you to be struck by lightning just for watching. Professor Brothers (http://www.superdeluxe.com/static/pb/#).
GoTitans3801 01-24-2008, 12:33 PM I really wanted to see this, it looked interesting though. Did it get boring? I didn't know how two hours of it would last...
Broken Record 01-24-2008, 12:56 PM I missed it, but I've set the DVR to catch it on Feb. 2.

Professor Brothers are a mess!
PitBull 01-28-2008, 04:42 AM After watching the remainder of the documentary, I was really disappointed to say the least..
Whoever came up with the name should be fired. It should be changed from "Life after People" to "What would happen to all our belongings if not regularly maintained by People". Other than the minor reference to the increase in the Fish population which would take place (thanks to all the fishermen being dead), there was very little reference to "LIFE".
The documentary started well with the electricity going off everywhere, and pets escaping their homes and forced to survive in the outdoors, but then it started showing us what would happen to all our belongings and man made structures in time, and just stuck to that thought for the remainder of the movie.
I foolishly imagined the director would take a turn and focus on more interesting factors such as the environment, the ozone layer, global warming, wildlife, evolution of other creatures, the atmosphere, and how these would be adversely affected after humans disappear from the planet.. but instead you're led to suffer through an hour or so of engineers explaining how the cement between bricks expands during the summer which will cause it to collapse after 206 years or so.
Their solution for everything is to paint it, and it was almost comical to hear them stress that point over and over again. "the Eiffel tower is painted once every 7 years to avoid rusting", "the Manhattan bridge is painted every 2 years to avoid corrosion".
I was almost convinced the credits would show:

All in all, I'd give this documentary a C- for lack of content. And thats being generous.
GoTitans3801 01-30-2008, 04:16 AM Disappointing to hear, Pitbull. I'd hoped more things would be included.
