View Full Version : Titans Training Camp Week One Review: QB, RB & FB
goTitans.com 08-01-2008, 10:41 AM SUMMARY: Each year, I try to recap the first week of Titans training camp and give some early impressions of the players. Having said that, I feel it is important to get my disclaimer out of the way first which is "It is only the first week of training camp. What we are seeing now often does change. Take the following opinions as just that."
Now, a breakdown by position group. We'll start with the QB, RB and FB.

vslyke 08-01-2008, 10:56 AM Great article. Do you think we might carry Martin as our 3rd QB this year instead of putting him on the PS?
MJTitans 08-01-2008, 11:03 AM Nice, thanks TJ. I can't wait to see CJ for myself and to see how we use him... Titans have never really had a guy like that, so I'm hoping Fish and Dinger can find ways of fitting our offense to his talent instead of trying to fit him into our offense.
How has Vince looked behind center? His rookie year he appeared surprisingly comfortable standing in the pocket, and then last year for various reasons he looked lost - probably in large part due to taking more snaps under center instead of in shotgun. Are his 3 and 5 step drops looking sharper?
TitanJeff 08-01-2008, 11:48 AM I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I think Martin will go to the PS. He may not stick though. Much depends on the preseason. If he looks good, someone who carries three QBs on their active roster may want to look at him. Also, teams can compete with the $$$ for practice squad players. We lost Skip Hicks from the PS a few years back who ended up on the Bears (I think) squad because it paid more and he had a better shot there.
As for Vince, you might look at the daily reports to get a feel. I think he's progressed but he remains inconsistent. He's not staring down receivers. He's working through his progressions. He still has those "who was he throwing the to" moments. He seems his best when he's moving.
The Gloat 08-01-2008, 06:23 PM Thanks TJ. Especially throwing in the Omar Cuff note. I love his running style. Reminds me a lot of Kevin Faulk, and some team (maybe not us) could use a guy like that.
RollTide 08-01-2008, 08:05 PM I don't think we've seen him go wide open yet.
Expect to see that type of comment often in the next 2-3 years. Gosh he just hasn't gone all out yet. I guess he is too good to give his all in a training camp?
At least we have omar cuff!
TitanJeff 08-01-2008, 08:12 PM C'mon Tide, you know as well as I that there is no reason for him to run full throttle down the field once he's past the defense. Training camp is a marathon.
Talk to us after the first preseason game if you see him dogging it against the Rams.
BTW, excellent spice you have for an av. I love it though the family complains I use too much.
Alpha-Centuri 08-01-2008, 08:15 PM I think CJ hit on RollTide's girl, and has had a vendetta ever sense :suspect:
Burner28 08-01-2008, 09:43 PM Nice read TJ.

Sounds like he did more than hit on her.
GoTitans3801 08-02-2008, 08:02 AM You can never have too much tony's!
RollTide 08-02-2008, 08:58 AM Jeff's family will especially love the extra spice.
All i'm saying about CJ's speed is that comments like what jeff made could be an indicatioin that his speed isn't as overwhelming on the field as his timed speed. When he matches against a linebacker in 5 on 5 drills does he school him? We have some fast linebackers. Does he line up in the slot and get seperation from people?

Everything I have read from media and fan accounts is that CJ IS that fast on the field. Note comments by Fisher of the LB and DB's having to adjust their angles to get a finger on him due to him blasting by initially.
He just appears to be not going full out to achieve that speed, which means that he must make wide-open look easy or he still has another gear left (unlikely).
So RT, what level of performance will it take from CJ this year for you to get past your 4 month and counting bash fest? 1500 all purpose yards? 2000? 3000? OROY? Just curious.
