We should petition the league to play a 4-4-4

But Griffin doesn't really count, if anything he takes someone away. So, it should be more like a 4-4-5.

    Wimbley, Martin, Casey, Morgan

    Ayers, Gooden, McCarthy, Brown

    Verner, Griffin, Wilson, Pollard, McCourty

    sounds about even.....

We did not draft a 3-4 linebacker. He is as much a 4-3 linebacker as there was in this draft.

A 3-4 olb would be 250 lbs with a history of rushing the passer something this guy has not done. He is 234 and has played as a straight 4-3 will backer who is best in coverage. Not rushing the passer.Because 3-4 OLB have defensive end like run responsibility he would not fit at all.

4-3 and 3-4 is meaningless anyway when half of the downs played are in nickel or dime packages.

We drafted him for nickel and dime coverages.

    All your analysis is wrong.

This is true. I think he was drafted as the nickel LB to stick in with brown. Plus lets ayers rush from DE more. Just opens up the options to cover better.

That would be the dumbest idea on earth. You have to have a system people believe in and can be coached to play. Why would Williams with a long history of success as a defensive coach do an about face when he has only one year to deliver?

The main issue is do we play a 4-2-5 nickel or a 3-3-5 nickel or both with different personnel for each. That in no way means we would be a hybrid defense.

If this season proves to be a failure and we end up changing our coaching staff i would be all for a switch to a pure 3-4 and 3-3-5 type system where you draft and coach that system.

I'm not anti 3-4 and it's obvious that some of the finest defensive minds in football have made that switch. Belechick and and his protege Saben and of course Dick Lebeau. All of these guys were 4-3 guys at one time and switched.

But even most 3-4 teams will use the 4-2-5 nickel.

There is also the fact that our offenses in the last decade seem to have more trouble with 3-4 teams. Perhaps if they practiced more against a 3-4 defense they could be better prepared.

Bottom line this year is i don't want a hybrid anything or a 3-4 i want Greg Williams defense. fast, aggressive 4-3.

Gooden isn't what made me think we are going 3-4. It's the fact that every DE we targeted or acquired is like 6'5"+, 280lbs+, and pretty slow.We had our shots at sleeker pass rushing 4-3 types multiple times and we didn't take a single one. This makes me think that these guys weren't brought in to rush the passer but to be used similarly to how the Ravens use their DEs. Also we brought in Sammie Lee Hill who I don't know if he can be a good nose but definitely has the body for it. I don't believe Gooden was a part of the plan, they were just in the position to take a freak athlete so they took it. And I'm aware that Gooden isn't known as a pass rusher but neither was Brown and he turned out to be pretty decent at creating pressure.I'm just speculating and I'll likely be wrong but my logic may not be perfect but it's not absurd either.

We added bigger defensive lineman because Williams (and Grey) like they're lineman to stuff the run while and free up they're blitzing linebackers. That's why I'd like to see us pick up Isreal Idonije, he would be a perfect fit for our defense.

    Example:
In 2011 Greg Williams' starting DE's were Will Smith (282 lbs) and Cameron Jordan (290 lbs)

While he was in Tennessee for our glory years we played Kevin Carter at DE and he was 300+ pounds.

Gregg Williams never coached Kevin Carter.
