These are my observations from the 2nd segment of the season. This includes weeks 6-10. This segment was definitely 1000x better than the last one. This is where we were playing our best football. Back to back victories against PIT and BUF, a bs loss to IND because of the refs, and a blowout of MIA. The only set back was getting absolutely annihilated by CHI. First I'll post some observations, then my trash or treasure segment, and finally we played a bunch of teams that we either picked up free agents from or are thinking about it. I will do an analysis of those players. Let's get started.

    1. Griffin looked much better in this part of the season. Wasn't afraid to make tackles and came in for some big hits. He was not up to a pro bowl level like we're used to, but played much much much better. That wasn't hard though since in the first 5 games I don't think he could have played much worse. He had 1 interception and a blocked field goal against IND, but looked better in coverage (though still not great) and actually attempted to tackle people and come in for big hits this entire segment. The coaches must have lit a fire under his butt. If he continues to play like this next year I have no problem keeping him.

    2. Stewart looked much better as well. I ragged on him hard in the last post. He actually is the only guy that switched from trash to treasure in this segment. Looked great in run blocking. Looked great in pass blocking. Still had a couple penalties, but no where near the amount earlier in the season. Actually the entire line looked way better, even the subs. Otto came in vs IND and completely stonewalled Freeney for the entire game. I don't even think Freeney had a QB pressure. Lutui started the last 2 games as well and looked very competent. The entire line actually opened holes and pass blocked very well. The only exception to this was Hutchinson. Got pushed around way too much. Major liability in the run game and not too good at pass game as well. Most improved unit goes to them.

    3. Hasselbeck played better, but still was not very good. Lots of dinks and dunks. Any pass he attempted over 20 yds had a near 0% completion rating. Locker played the final game of the segment vs MIA and I think that shoulder really bothered him. This is the first game I actually detected accuracy issues. Didn't seem to step into his throws as much as I think he was worried to get hit in that shoulder. I feel this was the reason for his declining play at the end of the season. Should be better after surgery. Locker threw under 50% with 2td 0int. He ran the ball very well in this game as well.

    4. Our pass defense was still awful. Half way through the segment Sensabaugh took over Mouton in the Nickel and I think this really helped. In those games (IND, CHI, MIA) our pass defense really improved, but was still not great. Mouton was really good in run support, but I don't think he could cover a HS receiver at this point. Glad he's gone. Sensabaugh looked really good in coverage. I think he made more plays in the pass game in 3 games than Mouton did in the previous 6. The soft zone still pissed me off. Everyone would drop out and short receivers would be open all day. McCourty did look very good though with 2 int and a couple deflections. Babineaux was non existent.

    5. Morgan really impressed. In fact the entire pass rush improved. Morgan and Wimbley brought the pressure very consistently with Morgan being slightly better than Wimbley. The thing that surprised me was this did not affect his run defense. Even though we got a lot of pressure, it did not translate into a lot of sacks. Because we played such a soft zone, every time we got close the QB had a wide open safety receiver. I think the pressure would have resulted in way more sacks if we played tighter coverage on the outside, which it looks like we are doing. I was very happy with our pass rush even though a lot of people are talking trash I think it was one of our better units. Morgan is really starting to look like a 1st round pick. After Casey really impressed me in the first segment I really didn't notice him that much in the 2nd one.

    6. The emergence of Zach Brown happened in this segment. Everyone knows how good he is in pass coverage, but I was really surprised by his run support. Really all of the LBs are very good in run support. Ayers played very well in this segment. It seemed that every time I noticed him at DE he brought some good pressure. Pass D needs some work, but his tackling is great. Lastly McCarthy. This is a different run D when he is out. I noticed this first in the IND game. We shut down the run game for almost 3 quarters with him in. He got hurt for two series and Shaw came in and they ran it down middle very effectively. McCarthy came back in and we stonewalled them up the middle again. He needs to stay healthy. He didn't really affect the pass game as much though.

    7. No receiver really looked that good. Washington really fell off from the start of the season. This could have been because of the emergence of Britt and Wright. Both of them looked really solid, but neither really dominated a game. I suppose that's because they had noodle arm Hass throwing the ball. Cook was a non factor in this segment. Made a couple big plays, but was otherwise invisible. D. Williams is not going anywhere. Very reliable in 3rd down situations and makes a few plays whenever he gets a chance to get out there. Very solid depth.

    8. Special teams really settled down in this segment. Not a lot of big plays at all, yet very few bad plays either. Instead of Reynaud being a bright spot on the team like he was in the first segment. He just kind of blended in and was very average. We did block a FG, but also had one of our punts blocked so they really evened out. Kern has a boot, and Bironas missed 1 FG from distance but was otherwise very solid.

    9. CJ looked very good as well. Was decisive hitting the hole and actually lowered his shoulder to pick up a couple more yards. With the o line playing 1000x better, CJ played 1000x better. Looked very elusive and still has elite speed. Jump cuts just make the D look silly.

I think the Locker accuracy issues are a bit over blown, I'm more worried about his decision making.

Free Agent Analysis - Remember this is indicative of only one game and is not the story of the season.

    Bills
Wilson - Didn't really notice him much in the game. Kind of had a Babineaux feeling where I would see him around the ball, but never really made a play on the ball.

Fitzpatrick - Looked very good, but wouldn't read into it that much. Every QB looked really good against us up to that point. Reminds me of a younger Hasselbeck. Not elite arm strength. Lots of dinks and dunks. Has a better deep ball though.

Levitre - This guy is the real deal. We got no pressure in the pass game from the guy he was blocking and they ran behind him almost the whole game and gashed us. Excited to have this guy.

    Colts
Freeney - He was working on Otto all day with Roos out with appendicitis and was stoned cold all day long. Yes, you read that right MIKE FREAKING OTTO. I don't even think he had one qb pressure. I'll pass on this one.

    Bears
Idonije -Looked solid until an injury in the 2nd quarter knocked him out of the game. Good in run defense, but didn't really notice his pass rush. Wouldn't mind picking him up.

He did look very inaccurate vs MIA. Lots of overthrows and a couple just plain off the mark. Seemed tentative to step into his throws and that's where accuracy comes from. I really think that had a lot to do with his shoulder as he didn't really want to step up in the pocket in fear of getting drilled directly in the shoulder. He looked very good before the injury, and I know its only been 1 game after the injury but he looks like a different QB.
