New Titans safety Bernard Pollard is fresh off a Super Bowl title with Baltimore, played the last two seasons with Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, and has been on a team with a winning record for four straight years.

So it’s clear that part of the reason the Titans signed him was to bring an infusion of both leadership and attitude to the defense.

But even as outspoken and confident as Pollard is, he feels his greatest ability to lead will be by example – not the spoken word.

“I’ll say a few things, but for the most part, I’m going to go out there and knock the (heck) out of somebody on the field and hopefully you follow,” Pollard said Tuesday. “That’s the mindset that we have to have on this defense. If a guy come across the middle, if a guy comes up to you … if a guy wants to pick a fight, we as a defense, we’re going to fight and ask questions later.

“The guy has the opposite jersey on so we’re going to fight and we’ll beat him down. Then we’ll talk about it afterwards. We’ll laugh and hopefully our team didn’t get beat up.”

Pollard doesn’t want the expectations of leading a team like Lewis or Reed.

“All I can do is what I know how to do,” Pollard said. “I can’t continue to try to bring what Ray Lewis brought to Baltimore. I’m not Ray Lewis. I’m not Ed Reed. Those guys are Hall of Famers. Those guys are legends in Baltimore.

“So I think for the most part I can just lead by example. I’m a guy where I flip that switch on the football field. And all I can do is hope my teammates all got switches because if you don’t, this is the wrong sport you’re in.”

Is it a challenge, Pollard was asked, to get young players to follow that aggressive mindset?

“We can’t give anybody a heart to go out there and be somebody he’s not,” Pollard said. “We can’t. That’s up to the front office, up to the coaches, to know what they’re doing in the draft. So I hope they know what they drafted.

“The guys that are here, I hope everyone knows how to hit. I hope everyone has that switch. I hope that everyone wants to knock the (heck) out of somebody else. That’s what is going to keep those seats full and (keep us) winning games and that’s what is going to keep us going to the playoffs.”

If you think Pollard is the kind of guy who might hit it off with new Titans senior assistant/defense Gregg Williams, you’d be accurate.

“Coach Williams is a character. He really is. He reminds me a lot of (former Titans linebackers coach) Gunther Cunningham, who I had in Kansas City,” Pollard said. “Coach Williams is very passionate about what he’s out here doing. He’s not out here for no reason.

“Coach Williams and (defensive coordinator Jerry Gray), they’re trying to (produce a playoff team). When it’s all said and done, we’re going to go out and play football. It’s smack you in the mouth football, fight you football and straight to the point. There’s no hiding. You can’t hide in this defense, man, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

If you watch his Pollards interview it makes me think Griffin isn't going to like this at all. Pollard says he wants people who will hit hard and not worry about the consequences. Griffin has come out 5 times and said "im not making hits that could possibly be fine-worthy, dis my money i gotta feed my kids". Can we clone Pollard and toss Griffin in a river?

This mentality will be contagious. That's what we need. I like the sound of the force behind this defense tho. Pollard on the field, Williams on the side line. He's gonna bring that difference. It'll effect the offense as well seeing how fired up he gets. Then munchak will still sit there calm. Or maybe Williams will rub off in munch as well. Give him some damn personality lol

Pollard needs to start every practice by smacking Griffin in the face ... maybe that will fire him up.

that was music to my ears , im so tired of that non aggressive sissy no personality defense, we used to be the Tyrants!! Griffin better find that "switch" fast, I just wish we had a mean corner , maybe one will emerge, dam i miss Finny. Pollard seems like the perfect pick up tho, GO TITANS!!!!!! EVEN MUNCH IS GONNA TURN MEAN!!!

I am sure that if Griffin goes to break a pass up and then holds back like he has in the past Pollard will chew his ass out. Griffin definitely has it in him to lay the wood but he has clearly been holding back.

I think Pollard has become my favorite off season pick up. You can already tell his personality and play on the field is going to be contagious and he seems like a true leader that we haven't had on defense in years.
