    Strait from the horses mouth:

    Jerry Gray

Looks like we'll be showing much more looks this year. People who have been clamoring for the 3-4 will finally get their wish. While I don't want to switch to a base 3-4, I'm very much an advocate of multiple looks on D, really keeps the offense guessing. It will also really allow us to use all those new bodies we got.

I also don't think this is just 'all talk' like last year with that buzz around Tommie actually playing. I know Gregg is going to make sure we keep it interesting, so yeah, I'm excited there.

If our offense can move the ball a bit and not turn it over a lot, I know our fresh and new look D will do their part.

Yea I heard all that and smiled, but then I remembered who we're dealing with here. Jerry Gray has always talk to a good game, but come time to implement what he's talking about, it never happens. So Ill hold off on jumping for joy til I see us in a 3-4

I think it is a given they can have Ayers and Wimbley both on the ends in passing situations and either can come on the rush or drop back into coverage. Wimbley might be better as an OLB in a 3-4 than he is a straight DE and Ayers would be a perfect 3-4 OLB. The problem has always been 1. they didn't have the beef up front and 2. with McCarthy being injured they didn't have depth at ILB. So they sign what they think is a quality ILB (also considered drafting one early) and some beef up front. They also drafted Zach Brown last season. They also went after man cover CBs and another LB who can cover people. So finally they might have the parts they need to run more three man fronts and disguise who the other one or two pass rushers are going to be.

Oh, also add that they have had very poor SSs and went out and got two. Pollard can give them options they never had before because he is like an additional LB out there (has the size to play Will). So that gives them another guy to help stop the run when they are in a three man front, blitz or cover TEs and RBs.

I agree completely. Greg Williams ran a hybrid D in New Orleans and expected him to do the same here. I think this is why they have been so focused on signing big D linemen. Excited to see how they use Ayers. He could be pro bowl this year.

Switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 can be tricky. 3-4 can be a great base defense if done correctly, but will be horrible if not done well. It makes me a bit nervous after watching UT switch to a 3-4 last season, only to give up the most yards in school history. (Dating back to 1890 lol) Hopefully our professionals can get it done.

New Orleans didn't exactly have the greatest defense the past few seasons with G Williams but hey, he's better than Gray at least.

I rematches the Super Bowl against the colts... They actually played a good amount of off man... It'll be interesting to see how he implements the press coverage.

I'd say we need to learn how to execute the defense we've been trying to run before we start talking about any additional schemes...especially one that is much more complex than what we have right now.

I'd much rather hear Gray talk about better execution from his defense rather than changing schemes. I don't care wether we run a 3-4 or a 4-3...just figure out what you want to do and execute it.

100% true. Gray has been talking about putting guys in a position to succeed for three years. It's "show me" time.

But again, in Gray's defense we had multiple holes with our personnel. Remember, in Gray's first season we had Ruud starting, Jones was a DE, Smith was a DT and McCarthy, Ayers, Casey and Klug were all rookies. The next year we added Brown and Martin. But we still had holes at NB and SS. Building basically the whole defense from scratch less just a few players like McCourty and Griffin has been the problem. We had to rebuild the whole DL and LB core. Now the pieces are starting to come together and we have more depth (injuries have been part of the problem as well).

As for "putting people in position to succeed" I think we can say Brown is a good example of that working. I think Ayers is another guy Gray would like to be more active in making plays but injuries have forced Ayers to be more of a cover guy and less of an attacker which I think is his strong point.
