Best war films...Memorial day special..

    A discussion of this kind begins with "Lawrence of Arabia" which is obviously a war film and i believe the best film ever made. Based on a real man and a real story that was actually more spectacular than the film. The film and the story from ww 1 was an epiphany for me.

    The bridge on the river Kwai- is starting right now on tcm. David Lean's previous film to Lawrence this certainly would have to be on anybody's top ten list.

    The dirty dozen-another personal favorite.


    Patton-Biopic of a very successful but eccentric general with an obsession with history.

    Saving private Ryan
    Braveheart
    Battleground




    More of my favorites in a genre i really love.



    Many more to talk about of course. I personally prefer films about infantry, cavalry and special ops. Films about naval operations are filmed in a studio and films about air operations are simulated so i do not normally like those as much.

    Good thread and should get some fun responses :)

    My absolute favorite is Apocalypse Now. The redux in particular was cool. Ended up feeling like a whole new movie. So many big stars. Some of them, like Laurence Fishburne, were in the film long before they were big names.



    A movie that had a hard time getting made, and turned out amazing, was Gettysburg.

    In the less known category is Four Feathers. Staring the late Heath Ledger and based off an old British novel. It is about the British war against the Mahdi in Sudan in the late 1800s. A war that has some eerie similarities to some wars being fought this century by Western countries in the Middle East.

    A Russian film from a few years back Taras Bulba is another one I love. It is about a Zaporozhian Cossack (Ukrainian) chieftain during the foolish Polish invasion of the Russian Empire. For those who do not like subtitles there is a Hollywood version from 1962.

    Based off a novel from 1938 about World War I is Johnny Got His Gun. The movie is from 1971 and is low budget. I pretty twisted story about an American soldier who in the war becomes a basket case (loses both arms and legs) and loses his mouth, ears and nose. The novel was the inspiration for the Metalica song One. And scenes from the film were used in the video:

    I highly suggest this to anyone with an interest in todays war and what we are doing wrong over there. I have also yet to see a capture of what attitudes are like in the military. This basically nails it.

    Restrepo
    Its a documentary guaranteed to bring some tears. Watch at your own risk.

    Band of Brothers - It should be named while it was a TV mini series. It felt like a long movie, and surely looked like one

    The longest day was on AMC yesterday afternoon and it is a fine and interesting film. It is about D-day from all the different perspectives. British, American, French commandos and the Germans.

    Has an all star cast but no one actor actually stars in the film. Henry Fonda plays Teddy Roosevelt's son who despite his rank wants to be one of the first to hit the beach. John Wayne plays the leader of the 82nd airborne. Robert Mitchum leads a squad onto the beach but for some reason never has a gun in his hand.

    It's the reference point for Saving private Ryan. The German generals are depicted as smart men who are trying to do what is best for their side of the war not just blood thirsty Jew haters. The French commandos take a town and fight with great bravery.

    Looking at the responses it brings up the issue of war films that basically have a anti war message. Almost all the Vietnam films are like that and usually those are not my favorites though i am basically anti war in my views.

    I don't consider born on the 4th of July or Coming home war films. And i do refer war films with a well defined mission or goal against a real enemy and as a result i do prefer WW2 films.

    One film that is shown a lot on cable and is shown every memorial day is The green berets. A very mediocre and overrated film.
