Markelle Martin wants to prove to the Titans he’s a competitor, and a solid option at the safety position.

During his first 14 months on the job, however, he’s spent most his time as a spectator.

Martin, a six-round draft pick in 2012, isn’t taking part in this week’s minicamp because of a groin injury he suffered earlier this offseason. Martin spent his rookie season on the physically unable to perform list because of a knee injury.

“It is definitely frustrating,’’ Martin said. “You feel like you are halfway in and kind of halfway out as far as being on the field. But I keep myself into it mentally as far as going over plays and talking to the guys.”

Coach Mike Munchak said on Tuesday he expects Martin to be back for training camp. Safety Robert Johnson is also sitting out the three-day minicamp following surgery at the end of last season.

Martin said he suffered his most recent injury while running less than full speed. He’s been rehabbing ever since.

“I understand you have your ups and your downs, but I understand it is a blessing to be here,’’ Martin said. “When I am fully healthy, I will be able to go full speed and compete.”

I'm tired of this kid not being out on the field and if the guy gets hurt going less than full speed how the heck is he going to really play? He might hurt his pinky or something making a tackle.

At this point I'm not sure where they are going to put him. I thought he might have a chance to be Griff's backup with nothing behind Griff but semi-pro level material or CBs. At least he was only a 6th round pick but it would be nice if some of these 5th (RJ) and 6th round guys could actually surprise us and at least be solid depth.

He wasn't anything newsworthy even when healthy.

But knew he'd be hurt constantly. Was in college.
