Thinking about going next year for diving at Cancun and a tour.

Is Mexico City/Cancun and Central America cheap and safe to visit.

Most of it will be with a tour so I'm not worried about the safety there. It's more doing Mexico (City and Cancun) & Costa Rica ourselves.

I lived in Monterrey for a while. Most dangerous part of the country but also a major business hub. Down south where you are looking to go it is not too bad. Just stay away from drugs and you should be okay. I have a friend who lives in Cancun now and it is safe there. She moved there to avoid kidnapping from the cartel that was extorting her father.

In Central America Costa Rica is very safe. Panama is pretty safe too. Though you may want to resist the urge to go to the Darien Gap. FARC and the right wing paramilitaries still lurk there. Honduras not so safe. A little further south Colombia has gotten a lot safer in recent years. Margarita Island in Venezuela is very nice and quite safe.

As for cheap. Not terribly. Cheaper than Europe but more expensive than Southeast Asia and Africa. Unless you go to Cuba. Which is dirt cheap.

You live in the deadliest country in the world, Mexico will be a paradise to those 5'6" spiders crawling around Australia.

I have been to Mexico when it was safe and it was great. The truth is that it is not safe now.
    It's not just Juarez..
I work with a group of travelers who have stopped going altogether - even Cancun.
Sad because I really like Mex.
    At your own risk...

I went to Tijuana. Not the safest destination anymore I hear. I enjoyed it for a little day trip, not to stay for an extended period of time.

Those destination spots aren't really a real feel of the country, but they are pretty safe.

I would prefer just staying in the Continental US, Hawaii, or one of the carribean islands.

No. Did not go into any establishments other than little convenience stores and other little trinket shops. I try not to tempt fate. And you know in Tijuana, that someone every 5 minutes is looking to pickpocket you at the very least. There is no way in hell, if I had kids, that I would take them there, but as a single person that is not completely a P#$$%, it wasn't a horrible place to be about 10 years ago. Cannot comment on anything since then.

We're not heading that far South. Only as far as Costa Rica.

Basically we'll do Aztec stuff and Cancun for diving and then a tour from Mexico to Costa Rica and Costa Rica ourselves.
