It's either the scheme or the players and I think it's a little bit of both.

It was preseason and we played a vanilla cover 2 defensive scheme. I can almost guarantee we will not play defense like that come regular season.

It may be just one preseason game, but why talk about press coverage all offseason, and then not use it in a meaningless preseason game in favor of conservative coverage? This should be the time to try different schemes so we know what we have.

Almost every team runs a conservative scheme during preseason mostly so they don't give away what they are going to run during the regular season to early. Hell the Redskins sent 4 man rushes most of the night but Kerrigan and Orakpo were better at beating their guys.

    Exactly.

We have capable safeties now. No need for this conservative coverage.

Yea we need to get our corners familiar in a more aggressive style of play now. Not wait until we play the squeelers in week 1. Hopefully we see something different against the bungles.

Washington's defense was as bad as ours last season. The Texans featured a top 10 defense last season and Philips was bringing the house on most plays against the Vikings the other night. And why not? It's preseason. Aggressive teams are still aggressive.

Orakpo sucked. He did nothing but pin his ears back and go after the QB. He got a sack. He also got an offsides penalty and gave up a huge TD to CJ. That's not what I want to see on our defense.

That's not the point. The point is that every team handle preseason differently and a lot of teams decide to go with a vanilla and simple defense.

Greg Williams has never had a passive defense and I sincerely doubt we brought him in to just ignore any input he has. At least give it until week 3 before you start worrying because anything before that is just pointless hand wringing.

I want to be on the same side as you, but that was the exact same defense we played the entirety of last season. I don't see any guarantees there.
