Head coaches don’t often rave about undrafted free agents, so this Mike Munchak comment on tight end Jack Doyle speaks volumes.

“He just gets it,’’ Munchak said of Doyle. “He has a really good feel for the game. He’s obviously raw in a lot of areas and hasn’t done a lot of things we do. But you can tell him, and he figures out how to do it quickly. He has very good instincts.

“He is an interesting guy, and he has worked hard. And he’s a great kid.”

Doyle, who played at Western Kentucky, is going to play a bunch in Saturday’s preseason game at Cincinnati.

With veteran tight end Delanie Walker still on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform list and with Taylor Thompson sidelined with an injury, Doyle worked with the first team in practices this week, along with veteran Craig Stevens.

Against the Bengals, Doyle will be on the field early, likely with the starters. And he’s pumped about the chance.

“Every single day is an opportunity, and Saturday will be another one. I am just trying to make the most every single day,’’ he said. “I have a blast playing football. This whole experience so far has been great.”

Doyle, who’s 6-6, 258 pounds, has the size to stick around.

In practices, he’s been impressive, though he’s still making his share of mistakes as well, he admits. Along with former Vanderbilt tight end Brandon Barden and free agent Martel Webb, Doyle is trying to prove to coaches he belongs.

Indications are Doyle’s ahead of Barden and Webb in the competition behind the veterans. Barden spent last season on the team’s practice squad, but was called up to the active roster late in the season.

“I just want to keep getting better. (Coaches) tell me “good job” when I do a good, but they’re also the first one to correct when I make mistakes,’’ said Doyle, who totaled 162 catches for 1,769 yards eight touchdowns in 42 games at Western Kentucky. “The key is you never get too high or too low.

“Mentally, that is the hardest transition for rookies, in my opinion. Trying to stay sharp for every meeting and practice, it’s tough. You are exhausted every day at the end of the day and you have to be back on top of it the next morning. That is the biggest part of it, the mental aspect. But I am excited to be here, I know that, and I’m going to keep working at it.”

Munch better quit hyping him up so much, because I believe Doyle goes to the practice squad and I doubt he will be safe there if Munch keeps hyping him up.

You'd be surprised of what other teams know about our players.

I would like for him to stick around on the practice squad, but I think he gets swooped up. So I hope he doesn't show out in the preseason too much.

I could see that being possible, but only if Doyle shows flashes in his time on the field. If he doesn't show anything, then off to the practice squad he goes.

In college he basically knew two routes... Tho he played those two very well and caught nearly everything thrown his way, he was constantly on the right place. He's an underneath type target. Not a seam runner
