Here's my beef with ATV.. he is too slow and too small to play outside against most #2 WRs. You have to have the size and strength to match up to WRs, or you'll get thrown around. Size is crucial when it comes to WR vs CB, more that you guys seem to believe. ATV will get thrown over when covering a tall WR.

Lets take a look at a few match-ups this season:

ATV vs Houston: Andre Johnson (6'3), Lester Jean (6'1), DeVier Posey (6'1), and DeAndre Hopkins (6'1). All of those WRs are 6'1 or taller, strong, and physical.

ATV vs Jacksonville: Justin Blackman (6'1), Cecil Shorts (6'0), Mike Brown (5'11), Ace Sanders (5'7). ATV needs to be inside against Mike Brown and Sanders. Blackman will over power him, and Shorts will blow past him.

ATV vs Indy: Reggie Wayne (6'0), Darrius Heyward-Bey (6'2), TY Hilton (5'9) Wayne would DOMINATE ATV off the line, and DHB would blow right past him. ATV would be a perfect matchup for Hilton in the slot, however.

I can do this for every team, and the result is similar. ATV is not a good match up against most teams 1 and 2 WRs.. he will either get over powered or outran.

ATV excels in the slot, and he's a great playmaker. He is a fantastic slot CB, but putting him outside is not playing to his strengths.

I'd much rather see any of our other 3 CBs: Campbell, Sensabaugh, or BWW. Campbell and BWW are much taller and can hold their own physically against those WRs. Seasabaugh has the athletic ability to keep up with any WR, we just need to get his football IQ up a bit more. One thing is for sure: Campbell won't get dominated at the line like ATV will.

    tl;dr Bottom Line:
If you're gonna have ATV play outside, you can forget ANY AND ALL notions of pressing the WR. It's not an option whatsoever, as ATV will get thrown aside or blown past. So your only hope is to play that Jerry Grey defense and play ATV ten yards off the LoS. But then you take into account that ATV lacks the closing speed to make a play on the ball, so he'll consistently give up plays. I watched this all season long last year. We need to keep ATV inside.

If by some miracle Verner manages to cover the WR, he'll still get thrown over. If you're a QB throwing to a 6'2 WR being covered by a 5'10 CB, throw that b*tch high in the air and there is nothing little Verner could do. Verner's highest point is far lower than a tall WRs highest point. ATV is no Courtland Finnegan. He's a great slot CB, not to be matched up with tall outside WRs like he would be as the #2 CB.

McCourty is far from being a scrub. There are several teams in the NFL who would kill to have him on their roster. He's not the best...however he's average to above average IMO.

We could have Revis or Deion Sanders on this team, but with the huge cushions we give, I highly doubt any CB would look decent in this defense.

Good point. Right now I think it's scheme issue.

Things could be worse...we could still have Andre Woolfork still.

From what I've been told the decision was made because Finnegan had an uncoachable attitude. The staff began to resent him because it made younger players act in a similar manner. So the only person they had left to tag was Griff. I thought it sounded crazy when I heard it, but its the truth. Sad too because Finny was one of my all time favorite Titans.

You're right, everyone just catches balls in front of him and then he makes the tackle.

So what is he paid for? 32 teams desire to have one shut down CB.
