Bironas says timing was off

Titans kicker Rob Bironas says there are probably a few reasons he missed two of three field-goal attempts last Saturday against Cincinnati, but none are related to the sore back he had earlier in camp.

“The back soreness is gone … That’s not an issue,” said Bironas, who missed from 38 and 37 yards after hitting from 44.

“I can always count on (the back flaring up) once or twice during the offseason, once or twice during training camp and once or twice during the season. But we get through it. It’s been that way for eight years. There are no worries there.”

So what were the issues for Bironas against the Bengals?

One may have been rust, as he had missed several training-camp practices and the first preseason contest due to the back soreness.

“You gotta’ realize that’s the first time I’ve been in uniform in eight months,” Bironas said. “Number two, since the end of June, I’ve only had about 27 to 30 kicks — with the snap and the hold – with the team since we’ve been back in.”

Bironas also indicated that his rhythm was off on the misses, saying he needed to do a better job timing his kicks. He doesn’t want to arrive just as holder Brett Kern gets the ball, but doesn’t want to arrive too late and risk a block either.

“I know what the problem was so I can work on it this week,” Bironas said. “I’ve set a high bar over the years and I want to keep that bar high. I want to keep my numbers around 90 percent if I can’t hit 100.”

If he kicks this weekend like he did last weekend then you will see kickers brought in.

He's asking for trouble if he doesn't get this figured out quick.

Yup, can't be a clutch kicker when you miss from 38 and 37, those should be automatic. And I like Bironas, but he's gotta get things worked out.
