It was an eventful night for Alterraun Verner and Tommie Campbell, who are competing for the starting spot opposite Jason McCourty.

Both players were in the starting lineup, as McCourty got the night off.

Verner was beaten deep left on Minnesota’s first drive, surrendering a 28-yard completion to Rodney Smith. He also gave up a nine-yard slant for a first down in the second quarter. Verner responded with his best defensive play of the night, as he stepped up and put a hard hit on receiver Joe Webb, resulting in a 1-yard loss.

Campbell had a couple of tough moments. He missed tackling Joe Banyard following a short pass in the second quarter, allowing Banyard to score on an 11-yard completion. In the third quarter, Campbell was whistled for holding Smith, but Smith still came up with a 24-yard reception.

“I think things went pretty well overall,” Campbell said. “On the (missed tackle), I have to send that guy back toward the inside. It was a tough tackle, but it’s one I’ve got to make.”

Campbell said he tried to undercut a route on the play in which he was penalized, and wound up having to grab hold of Smith.

I try not to be a reactionary idiot but I think after watching last night's game I can safely say that no matter who "wins" this competition at corner we are totally boned. Both Verner and Tommy looked absolutely awful against back ups they should be dominating. Is there any FA out there who can help us at CB or is this just what we got for the year?

I give Verner the nod. I trust him not to make mental mistakes and not to miss tackles. He isn't going to hang with the stud WRs if put in man coverage with no safety help, but he has proven that he can be a playmaker with his great instincts.

Campbell has shown me nothing to make me feel that he can do a better job in shutting down a WR in man coverage

Last nights game was nothing close to the product we're going to put out next Sunday in Pittsburgh.

I know this because no starters played more than 10 plays. The defense you saw last night was the same simple basic vanilla generic lame boring defense all 32 teams were playing last night.

The 4th preseason game is less of a game and more of a formality. Every team runs the ball to run down the clock, every team looks past that weeks opponent because the idea is get in get out alive.

You wont see anyone getting their playmakers dinged up, its just simply not a good game to gauge anything off of.

Now if you came to me and told me 2 weeks ago we're in need of a CB, I'd agree. But dont look at last night game and take anything away from it. There's little there.
