Anyone do any online gambling on sporting events? I'm sitting around with nothing on my agenda today and so I started thinking (..uh oh). This may be a hair-brained idea but here goes.. can one make a good living by betting only on the big favorites.. the ones almost certain to win? If that's ALL you bet on, unless you just have awful luck, you should consistently make money right?

What kind of return can you usually generate on those big types of bets.. 20%.. 30.. 40%?

The big numbers are big because a lot of people are betting on the favored teams, which means the initial number was too low. The more that people put on the favored team the bigger the number.

Vegas always goes against the public because the public is always wrong. Vegas knows. They always know.

Say you put $1000 down on the Broncos to beat the Jags in Denver.. what kind of payout could you expect from that?

Almost nothing. I have done a slight bit of it.. it's not worth it. To make real money you have to be extremely patient, parlay TONS of games together, and mostly, get really lucky. and the more you parlay, the smaller your chances of winning.. because you have to win EVERY bet to win that amount.

If you only bet on the favorites, the risk is not worth it. If you win, you gain very little.. if you lose, you still lose everything. There's a reason gambling is a profitable business.. just not usually for the gamblers.

My advice... spend very little. I put 100 bucks in. Funny money. If you lose it... entertainment expenses. if you win (which you probably won't) then that's great.

Just my guess.. if you bet 100 on the Broncos to win.. you will gain under a dollar. Covering the spread is a different story.. but much more risky. They could beat the jags solidly, and you still lose due to the spread.

But if you only bet on winners and losers, the payout is insignificant enough to where it's not really worth wasting your time on.

My friend (who legitimately thinks he is a genius) thought he had it all figured out. He failed. He thought he was going to live off the winnings. He thought, based on Sagarin ratings, that he could accurately predict winners. The human element is too uncontrollable to predict accurately. He gave up on it. after he lost most of his money he put in. It can be a fun hobby though. I just wouldn't expect to retire off of it. I think it's still technically illegal as well in the USA, that's why they're all based offshore.. but I could be wrong.

I believe they are still illegal. The last one I used was British and would only take 10% of a winner using the spread. I put in about $100 and ended the season with $180 or so betting a whoppin' $20 per Titans game.

may I also add that you generally need to give them a credit card number.. One of the sites decided to double or triple charge his account.. and did not respond to his emails..

He reported it to the bank as fraudulent and got money returned.. but there's almost nothing that stops them from running away with your money. They are not regulated, as they are not even US based.

But I did not get taken.. so play at your own risk.
