Despite multiple supposed first-round grades, McCarron waits

The second round of the 2014 draft could see plenty of quarterbacks taken, from Derek Carr to Jimmy Garoppolo to Aaron Murray to Tom Savage.

Perhaps the most intriguing name to watch is A.J. McCarron.

The former Alabama quarterback recently claimed that “pretty much every” team he visited before the draft told him that he has a first-round grade, and that he could go in the 16-to-35 range.

Seventeen of those 20 picks have been made, with no McCarron being called. The Texans, who regained control of the board after the Vikings leapfrogged them for Teddy Bridgewater, will presumably take a quarterback — unless they trade for Ryan Mallett or Kirk Cousins.

Other hot spots for McCarron will be the Raiders at 36, the Titans at 42, the Cardinals at 52, the Bengals at 55, and the Patriots at 62.

Speaking of the Patriots, rumors have begun to emerge that the franchise notorious for trading down may actually trade up in the round for a shot at McCarron. Such a move would virtually guarantee that Mallett, a third-round pick in 2011 who is entering the final year of his contract, would be traded elsewhere.

I met some Bama fans yesterday, they thought McCarron to the Titans was a good idea. I was less excited by the idea, but we'll just have to see how thing shake out tonight.

I hate wishing for a good QB pick because it seems like such a shallow, 'star player" mentality; I'd rather build a crushing defense....however, our QB position has been SOOOOO bad! Why is it so hard to just get a guy who can read defenses, throw accurately and not take hits?? Is Manning seriously the only one out there in the profession who can do this??

AJ has 4th round written all over him.

Think about it, before the draft, QB needie teams were Texans, Raiders, Vikings, Jags, Titans, and Browns. After the 1st round, 3 of those teams have taken a QB in the 1st round (Jags, Browns, & Vikings), which leaves Raiders, Texans & Titans.

No one would rank AJ ahead of Derek Carr or Jimmy Garopolo. So lets say Texans & Raiders take both of them leaving just the Titans, if the front office is smart, they would look at the other teams and see it is very unlikely AJ goes to any other team unless they are trying to build depth.

Lovie Smith told reporters he thought Glennon was franchise QB, but who really knows if he trusts the job to him, so Buccs are about the only team that might take AJ before the 4th. I think the Titans would be smart to wait until 4th to get any QB if Carr & Garop arent there.

I am still not totally sold Whiz takes any QB in the 2nd no matter who is there. But I did read the Titans had Carr & Garop in for visits, so if they fall to us, it might happen.

Arizona is a sleeper team for QB's, Palmer is getting older and has always been on/off player. Id include them too if I was targeting a QB.
