LOL I remember back in 6th grade my science teacher asked me what causes wind. I went on to say wind is when trees move and touch each other causing a chain reaction that spreads the entire span of the globe.

    He was not impressed.

When it comes to breaking numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones and adding/subtracting them that way, it actually is very handy. I used to use it a lot when messing with huge numbers when I didn't have a calculator or was too lazy to use it. That's a skill most people tend to develop on their own as they get older. Force feeding it to young kids might not be the best idea.

And of course, giving schools a tax break for adopting it is bullsh*t. You're basically forcing it.

For most public school students math is the strongest form of neuroplasticity. So much of the higher math it isn't compulsory in real life to non tech or certain business careers - especially in the keyboard age. That said, NP exercise is what these kids need most.
Utterly stupid to simplify it because it's process of solving itself that is what's most important about math.

No wonder MacDonalds has pictures of hamburgers on their cash register keys.

    totally true.

Although most people use algebra every day but don't think about it as algebra.

Constantly have to figure out how many of this makes that and such.

Yep, we had to learn all the timestables up to 12.
Even had competitions with a ladder of rankings. I was the king of 7 times tables.

These days they probably don't do it and any teacher who would systematically rank students from top to bottom would get every whinging parent calling the school and probably get fired.

I took four years of art in high school. First two years was basic art taught by an ex Black Panther. We spent every minute learning about Martin Luther King.
Third year, which was advanced art taught by a frustrated hippie who taught us about John Waters movies. First assignment though was to sketch a pic of Martin Luther King. It was his favorite joke..
