Zach Mettenberger confident he'd beat out any QB at #2

I mean... it's pretty dumb to suggest he would even be allowed to compete with a QB taken at #2. There would be no real competition.

 

Mariota or Winston would both be day one starters. Any talk of an "open competition" with a 6th rounder from the previous year would be lip service only.

Pretty solid chance they could pick up Petty or another QB in the second or third and open it up though.

All of the rookie QBs from last season had to compete for their jobs. Henne started over Bortles until he got hurt.

IMO unless someone like Curtis Painter is your starting QB, there should be a competition.

Doesn't even have to be a "real" competition. The coaches can have their minds made up and likely would when picking a QB at #2). But a competition will bring the best out of both Mett and the rookie.

And if the rookie sucks in camp, you start the season with Mett out there.

 

Maybe they let the veteran play for a bit, but a player picked in the top 3 picks is always going to "win" the "competition" no matter how bad he looks.

Zero chance of Mettenberger beating out either Winston or Mariota in the long-run even if he outplayed them thoroughly.

 

If they pick a QB at #2 then that tells me that they don't think Mett can be the long term answer do I'd say that Metts chance of beating out the number 2 pick would be slim unless that pick really sucked it up.

With that said, Wizz has already proven he has no problem placing a top pick QB on the bench. Just ask Leinart.

I think this kid's confidence is a bit misplaced. He makes it seem like he was just lighting sh!+ up for us. Did I miss something? Was he great? Because that's not the impression he made on me. I give the guy a ton of credit for coming off of an injury like he did, I don't discount that aspect. I don't however feel like he proved enough to be acting like a big shot.

Confidence is one thing. Being an arrogant little ***** after playing decently on a horribly pathetic offense is quite another.

I like that we're in a really good position to get us a pretty real good QB. Be that by drafting Winston or Mariota #2, trading for a guy like Foles, signing one in FA, taking a guy like Hundley or Petty later in the draft or even if that is rolling with Mett. The fact that we are looking at all options and have some good options to choose from gives me some hope that we can finally get it together.

 

No problem with his comments at all. Reading the article, he doesn't come off cocky imo. He's just answering exactly like he is supposed to be answering.

 

I tend to belive he's right. Id give Winston the nod but Mett is right there with him. Would certainly be fun to see both compete in camp.

But if we go Winston at 2 it's his job IMO. Mett gets the start cause Whiz likes vets, but eventually Winston would be given his shot.
