I had owned and played most of the RTS games that you see listed in the top 10 lists. All the command and conquer games. All the Age of empires games, Warhammer, Company of heroes, Warcraft2 and 3. Played the hell out of COH the last 5 years.

I wanted to go back in time and play a game i had missed. I considered Homeworld a game with a fanatical reputation and a newer HD version. I decided to go with Starcraft.

I wanted the original first then i would go for Starcraft 2 so in December i treated myself to the Starcraft battlechest which was the original game, the Brood war ad on and a prima strategy guide. It was the best $18 i could have spent!

The game was a work of art, looked amazing for a 1998 release. It was also very easy to play. Any RTS vet can get right in there and play easy especially with the Terran race. The units, the maps, the strategies are incredible. You have a nice variety of tech upgrades and a variety of styles you can play. While it is a very easy game to start playing it is incredibly deep. You can play for a lifetime and never master it.

I was amazed that a 17 year old game still had thousands on battlenet playing in north America alone every time i logged in.

In short this may have been the best game i had ever played. The best strategy game anyway. Did the game have some issues with age? Yes there was no way to adjust the difficulty of an AI opponent or team mate. Path finding can be a problem as larger units might turn and go a different route. Also you could only take control of 12 units at a time.

All of these problems remedied by Starcraft 2.

It's a shame a thread this long is going to get no responses.

    Have a sympathy hi-5

Actually I was surprised to hear StarCraft still had tonnes of people playing it. I never played or really heard of it before so any game that old always surprises me when it's still got a strong community.

Imo, Warlords Battlecry series was the best RTS series ever. So sad that they haven't made a new one in 10 years.

The Lord of The Rings RTS back about 8 years ago was pretty good and I've been playing Warhammer 40k since 1993 so the RTS game came naturally to me. I've looked at Star Craft 2 a lot when at Walmart, just can't pull the trigger on it. I wish people still played the Wolfenstein Multiplayer. Loved that game!

Bring back the Mech Commander and Mech Warrior games!!!!!

I know you live on an isolated island in the middle of nowhere, but come on, ever since StarCraft came out it has had a huge following.

    That said, I liked Warcraft 1 & 2 better.

    Responding to Gunny and others...

Starcraft was by far the number one strategy game for Esports. It's now #2 to Starcraft 2. Players play in tournaments all overt the world. WCG championship tournaments in recent years have been in Europe, Seattle, China and Taiwan.

Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are popular all over the world and i think Starcraft is the best selling game of all time.

These are the most popular games in the esports capital of the world, South Korea. They have professional leagues and everything. 80 of the top 100 players in the world are from there and all 16 of the top players are South Korean.

In battlenet there typically are 2.5 million people playing Starcraft 2 daily.

So in short you have a game franchise that has been around since 1998 and is played all over the world by millions.

I don't understand that either, people loved those games. I think the company went out of business but that doesn't mean somebody couldn't buy the rights to it and release a new version.
