    CHARACTER: 1
    Tight End Specific Traits
    SEPARATION SKILLS: 3
A little up right and straight line as a route runner. However, shows very good speed and can get out of his stem well. Good pop out of breaks to run away from defenders. Has room to add some savvy as a route runner. Will round off breaks at times and can do a better job of setting up defenders at the top of his route. Also can do a better job of avoiding contact and show better spatial awareness against zone at times. Avoids traffic well with release out of the backfield or from the wing position.
    BALL SKILLS: 1
Big hands (10 ¼ ') and appears natural plucking away from frame. Above-average height and length (33 ½' arms) provide him with a wide catching radius. Natural snatching the ball on the run without breaking stride. Fast eyes and quick eyes out breaks to locate and secure throws. Adequate body control adjusting to throws on the run.
    BIG PLAY ABILITY: 1
Possesses the top-end speed to threat then vertical seams. Very good runner after the catch. Makes a quick transition after the catch. Flashes the ability to turn short throw into a big gain if locating a seam (See late in National Championship game vs Clemson).
    COMPETITIVENESS: 2
Improved toughness. Much better effort as a run blocker than early in his career. Willing to get physical and fights to sustain and finish blocks. Good focus in traffic securing throws. Competitive runner after the catch.
    BLOCKING: 2
Has improved immensely since early in his career. Added 20 pounds since arriving on campus as a freshman (2013). Still needs refining with technique in terms of hat placement and hand placement. However, he has the size, length and enough strength to cover up defenders and open up running lanes. Moves his feet upon contact to sustain blocks. Serviceable in pass protection. Although will get into trouble when he lunges at times.

TE is such a tough position to gauge as almost all TEs come out of college very raw and Howard is no exception. As it is almost a hybrid of two completely different positions college guys typically do not have time to get good at the two main aspects. The NFL prospects are typically good at one or the other then are drafted and you coach them up on what they are weak on. As such I have a hard time seeing almost any TE as worth a first round grade.

I like Howard but we don't have the luxury of drafting a player in the 1st to be back up to our pro bowler.

You're right, so at least he got some solid experience blocking, and the athleticism is obviously there. I'm going to make the Jared Cook comparison, which won't be popular with most, but he's a breath of fresh air as a GB fan. He's got first round talent, but I'm not seeing first round hands, though he's still a bit of an unknown since they didn't throw his way that often.

If he's there in the 3rd. Yes. First? Nope
