My top two guys were one and two!

In this week’s Thursday 10 we take a look at what we’re calling the “Jabrill Peppers All-Stars,” in honor of the most versatile players in college football.

    Derwin James, Florida State
    Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 211 pounds
    Class: Junior

Peppers carried the defensive Heisman torch last season. Had it not been for a meniscus tear in Week 2, James might’ve received that hype. James turned heads as a freshman in 2015 with 91 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, and even those gaudy numbers don’t tell the whole story.

Florida State employs James, a safety by trade, in a number of ways. James is Peppers-like with his ability to play safety (both safety spots), cornerback, linebacker and even occasionally as an edge rusher. He's also earned some kick return opportunities and lobbied Jimbo Fisherfor offensive touches.

James, a five-star prospect in the 2015 class, is a prime candidate to pick up Peppers’ mantle from a year ago. If healthy, he’ll likely do it better. Expect James to be in the Heisman conversation. He’ll also be a Top 10 pick in next year’s NFL Draft

    Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama
    Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 201 pounds
    Class: Junior

Fitzpatrick’s uncanny versatility often shined through as an underclassman, but never more so than midway through last season when he shifted to safety as Eddie Jackson’s injury replacement. There, Fitzpatrick anchored Alabama’s defense and showcased his ability as both an over-the-top safety net and as a backfield disrupter. But Fitzpatrick is most dangerous with the ball in his hands.

The New Jersey native, also a five-star safety prospect in the 2015 class, finished last season as an All-American after returning four of his six interceptions for touchdowns. He also added 62 tackles, five tackles for loss a sack and a forced fumble.

You won’t see Fitzpatrick come off the edge like James, but he’s versatile enough to play any position in the secondary. Fitzpatrick is the ideal prototype for a flexible and capable defensive back in today's pass-centric game.

As hyped as I am for Derwin next year, I don't think we will be in position to grab him. He's a top 5 talent.
