Pre-Draft Visits

Since when do scouts have to have a medical degree? If the medical staff missed it then that's not on the scout, for all we know JRob was the one who wanted Dodd.

 

Learning an injury history, speaking with his coaches, seeing if there's any sort of area that might become an issue is part of the scouts job. The medical team verifies that, if they didn't have any news on the foot prior to the medical teams job, they could have overlooked it.

I do agree that it's primarily on the medical team to find that. But it's a team effort to pass around information acquired from scouts that might lead to finding those things.

 

I HIGHLY doubt it was JR who had a thing for Dodd.

Almost everyone JR has picked has had multiple years of production in college, Dodd is an exception to that.

What I think happened with Dodd being picked by us was this: OLB is a premier position, it's almost as important as a QB or LT, so due to the importance at the position we looked for a good 3rd option in the unfortunate event that Orakpo or Morgan got hurt. Because without either our defense has been paralyzed.

Remember how Ruston Webster took Lewan when we didnt quite need him at the time? Same deal with Dodd. Teams value having good players on the edges... JR was probably talked into taking a DE/OLB type in the 2nd round because of the value...

 

I'm sorry I forgot scouts are allowed to make the picks in the draft. That goes against everything JRob is, I highly doubt he picks a player with knowing very little about them.

If you think JRob is picking guys based on only his scouts then we have another Webster on our hands. Come on JRob even met with and visited our 7th round picks, I'm sure he did his homework on Dodd.

 

Could have been a coach. Lots of talk earlier this draft season about how coach input mattered to JRob.

 

Honestly, I think you guys are grasping for anything at this point. We are talking about the 33rd overall pick here. Sure he probably valued input from scouts and coaches, but to think JRob made the pick just from there input is flawed logic. Dodd fit most of his traits he was a team guy with a relentless motor. Just lacked a lot of experience but had one really good season of tape. Sure it sucks he hasn't panned out yet but it's only been 1 frickin year, it's not like JRob is going to hit on every prospect. In the end it's his job to turn the card in.

 

This pick is an outlier when considering the experience check mark that basically all of the other picks have maintained. The one year wonder thing does not match up with his other early round picks. It is safe to assume that someone harped on this guys talent, constantly banged the table for this pick, and that person is in the corner with the ****** face on now.

That could have easily been DLB or another DL coach, scout or "trusted" member of the team. Something happened pretty drastically for JRob to alter his normal pick style. Maybe it was a precieved High value pick that happened to be available at 33... something here is different. Let alone the injury situation which makes it appear that we didn't vet the pick enough and that it might have been a split second decision.

This still falls on JRob. Make no mistake, we are just pointing out that it appears after 2 drafts that this pick looks funny in comparison.

 

Who pounded the table for Adoree Jackson in the 1st then? A jack of all trades and a master of now, a raw Cornerback prospect who provides special team capabilities. To me that is outside of JRob norm.

 

Straw man argument.

Look at how many games Adoree has played compared to Dodd. Not "well he's raw" - he's a three year starter, who by all accounts didn't spend any of those off seasons doing football activities.

Coaches expect him to have room to grow.

 

Lol. All of these conspiracy theories. It's not that uncommon for a guy coming from an NFL talent churning machine like Clemson, Ohio State, etc. to have only one year of great production, just as you saw from some OSU players drafted in the first this year. That's not ideal for a top 15 pick, but I'm fine with a pick like that in the second.

The only people who should be punished for the pick is whoever missed out on the foot injury, if it's something which could have in fact been detected prior to the draft. But he'll be a good player in time, if he can actually get out there.
