I'm trying to learn about these lil toys, amd trying to get a good overview. Looks like the Nano, Classic, and Touch are very similar....only difference is size? I'd like to play some music, video, games....and whatever else there may be to do with these toys. Seems like the $150 nano is the best option if you don't need a ton of storage space, right?

Can you dl music from say windows media player to an ipod? Or does it have to be from the Apple Itunes site? I assume games have to come from Apple. What about video or movies?

Any basic info a newb would need is much appreciated :))

Well, I have the first kind of Nano that came out. It's a really nice machine, and I highly recommend it. However, you would have to buy one used.

Basically, the Nano is the basic option. It still plays video but it has a very small capactiy. Basically, if you want a lot of video on your iPod, this isn't the right option for you. It is also the smallest, which makes it a good choice for joggers. The Classic is for those who don't mind the extra size and need a lot of storage. If you have a very large library of music and video, this is the one you need. The Touch is the fanciest, and the one that has the most capability. Basically, it's an iPhone without the phone, and more importantly, without the contract. You can get on the Internet via WiFi, and it has a great display for watching movies (or YouTube videos or web pages). If you want to put on some video and don't have a humongous library, I recommend the Touch. It's way more expensive, but it will make up for it with the web browser and the screen for watching video.

Simply put, no. However, if you had to for some odd reason, if you own the files you can add it to your iTunes library. That's a pain though, and I would just download from iTunes. Video and movies have to come from iTunes, as far as I know.

Another important thing, don't underestimate how much memory you need. It's easy to say but really hard to do. I know 4 GBs lasted me for a couple of years, but now I need a bigger one. You don't want to have to upgrade after only a year. A good general guideline is 250 songs = 1 GB.

  6. Really depends on how much music you have, if you want to watch video, and especially if you want a built in web browser and wifi (with tons of other apps starting in about 2 weeks). If you'd like web access, the touch is like an iPhone with no phone. It's also great for video, but it more expensive and has less storage.

If you have tons of music and/or video the classic may be better suited for you because it has a big hard drive and can hold a lot of data. It does video, but not a full size screen like the touch.

The nano is good if mainly you just are about audio and don't need tons of storage space. It can do video, but the screen is pretty small.

Any songs or movies you buy off the net will have to either come from Apple or somewhere that sells unprotected music (like Amazon). You won't be able to buy them from Microsoft.

iPods come with Apple's iTunes software, which is how most people sync media with their iPod. But there are some options that would allow you to sync with WMP or just a 3rd party program.

the trick is that AAC files purchased from the Apple Music Store can only be played on an iPod
    right?

the Nano is the best value for what you get and what it does
the Classic is the best option if you intend on carrying lots of large files
the Touch is the coolest 'gadget', but imo the 8gb model just is too restrictive

my suggestion is to get something that "will get you by" for now and wait and see what they do with the refresh. with high capacity SSD's becoming more accessible, it may not be long before we see 64gb - 128gb Touch models

there's also talk of new solar LCD powered products on the horizon

*** all 3 models are nearing the end of their "cycles" ...
keep an eye on this if you're in the market for ANY new Apple product :thumb:

  10. Exactly. iTunes purchases only work on an iPod (and other Apple devices).
