    *yawn* @ Ray Rice

He looks like he's running up-hill every time he gets the ball. Like it's a struggle for him.

He is not all those things and being half good at more than one thing doesn't mean crap bobby wade was a versatile guy.

There is not a single back in this league westbrook and LT included that can line up and be a WR and consistently get seperation from a CB or NB. An average WR like brandon jones is going to be better on the outside than CJ. He is a runningback just because he is fast doesn't mean he can play on the outside.

Reggie bush averaged 5.7 yards per reception. You mean a wide receiver like him? Reggie bush touched the ball over 225 times as a runner and receiver and had not one single play go over 40 yards and just 4 plays went over 20 yards. Reggie bush is not an explosive player so why can we assume CJ will be? Is CJ a better prospect than bush was?

Rolltide, I wish you would use some of your obvious passion and football knowledge in more interesting threads. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with this one. I can't believe there's a single member on this site who doesn't know how you feel about the CJ pick... and beyond that... what? I mean, you may be right... but then again you may be wrong. I don't know. I didn't see Chris Johnson or Ray Rice play a single game in college (obviously with such a strong opinion you've seen them both a bunch of times). I'm just hopeful that he can make a significant impact on the offense this fall, but that hope doesn't translate itself into an argument very well; so I'm left searching for some way to respond to your diatribes (this is the best I could come up with).

CJ has the potential to be all of those positions and be very good at them.

CJ has more speed that LT and BW. If you put a NB or CB on CJ, It means that there are only 6 guys in the box. It would open up space for VY or LW to run.
If you motion CJ outta the backfield and a LB picks him up, you have an obvious mismatch, assuming CJ can break the press by the LB.

Reggie Bush was missing Duece this year. Backs like CJ and Bush do much better when they have a complement. CJ is not a every down RB. Neither is Bush. They are playmakers that give you options all over the field. 5.7 yards a catch is not that bad. On first down that makes a 2 and 4. A manageble situation.

    Maximus my man.

CJ doesn't have more speed than those other guys on the football field. Football and track, completely different things.

Tony dorsett was one of the best athletes ever to play RB. In the 70s he once ran a 9.5 100 yard dash almost world class and did it on a concreate track with gym shoes.

When the cowboys got the right to hershal walker in the 80s they tried ti find ways to get he and dorsett both on the field at the same time and tried lining dorsett wide as a WR. Dorsett a hall of fame player could not play WR effectively.

WR and RB are 2 different skill sets and attributes. RB are explosive and powerful and usually built heavier while Wrs are more agile. In the entire history of the nfl there have been maybe 5 guys who could play both effectively. Lenny moore was the only player i know of who was a hall of fame caliber player at both positions. He moved from RB and ?WR for the colts.

Marshall faulk even with his 6800 career yards receiving got that yardage against linebackers, strong safeties nickel and dime backs and never had to go one v one with starting nfl CBs. A whole different game.

Yes it is bad because the other RBs in the league averaged more than 2 yards more. 7.9 ypc was the average. The average WR produced about 12 yards a catch.

Lendale white catching little dump passes averaged 5.7 ypc. Bush allegedly was supposed to be a big play guy.

If this ain't football speed, I don't know what is

The game of football has changed dramatically over the last 10 years. A new position has been invented. Sometimes called a slot back (WR/RB lined up in the slot), Chris Johnson has the skillset to play that position. No one here is arguing that CJ has the skills to be a Randy Moss. He doesn't, probably won't ever.

What CJ will do is create mismatches and force the defense to account for him. Ray Rice would do neither.
What Marshall Faulk did out of the backfield is what CJ will do.
    With this personell,
    QB-Young
    RB-White
    TE-Crumpler
    WR-Gage
    WR-JMac/R.Williams
    RB (out wide)-Chris Johnson
The defense has to make a decision. Go to the nickle and stick the NB on CJ (VY makes read to handoff to White). Running against Nickle would mean running against 6 men in the box
    Or
Stay in the base and stick a LB on CJ (CJ advantage, check to CJ)

That's what CJ does/has the potential to do to a defense
I don't see that with Ray Rice...

RollTide can't stand to not argue. I'd prefer to look on the positive side of things and think about a guy like Westbrook who had 90 receptions last year including 5TDs and a long of 57 yards. Westbrook is the same size as CJ. How do we know CJ isn't the next Westbrook?

How about Willie Parker? Same size as CJ and one of the top RBs in the league.

Julius Jones is about the same size as CJ and there were some who thought we should try and sign him before the draft when he was available.

Joseph Addai is turning out to be one of the best all around RBs in the league. He is listed at 5'11, 214 pounds. Not exactly a monster power back is he?

While Tide like to slam Reggie Bush because of his off year last year maybe we should remember Bush is a very good receiver. He caught 88 passes for 742 yards his rookie year (8.4 average). I'll take that from CJ his rookie year.

Only a real dope would watch CJ's college film and not see he is more than a track guy trying to play football. He has nice balance and vision and tremendous field speed. Keep in mind CJ ran his 10 yard split a whole .1 seconds faster than DeSean Jackson. How that translates on the football field in the NFL is still to be determined however the difference between winning and losing a big football game is often decided on making a few more first downs and converting TDs in the red zone. An occasional kick return for a TD or excellent field position certainly helps as well.
