After running a marathon at these speeds, it is not PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE to run another marathon for approx 2-3 months AT BEST.

Football is undoubtedly some intense exertion, but the next day, barring a significant injury, at least you can walk.

We aren't talking about what sport takes the most energy and is the hardest to do.

You said he was the best athlete in the world.

Running focus' mainly on your legs, which means I'm willing to bet this guy isn't benching much over 200 if that. Not impressive. You have to look at the big picture, hes an amazing athlete, but best overall? emphasis on the overall.

Well, I understand and I will elaborate. I've run 5 marathons, and I'm currently training to run 2 this year. San Antonio in Nov and Houston in January. My best time is 3:29:57. That works out to 8 min/mile. The average marathoner (myself) averages about 1500 miles during the 5-6 months that they train for a race. I burn through 5 pair of shoes during those 6 months. The shoes when I'm done with them are pretty much worthless for anything other than mowing your grass in. It isn't just about the race, in fact there is a saying among runners that the 26.2 is the easy part. I get up a 3:30 am on saturday to get in a 21 miler before the sun comes up. Remember I'm an average marathoner, I do it for fun. I run about 2 10+ milers during the week at about 5 in the morning and then go to work all day. I weight train 3 days a week and ride a bike and run during my lunch break. These elite marathoners make what I do look like I'm being lazy. They run well over 100+ miles a week. With all the running I do I couldn't hold a sub 5 min pace for longer than about 2 miles. I posted it earlier that Lance Armstrong who won the Tour 7 times in a row said that the Marathon is the hardest most mentally taxing thing he has ever done. He said he couldn't walk straight for a week.

Lack of constant physical pounding? Research was done and it showed that everytime a runners foot hits the ground it is equiv. to 3 times the runners body weight slamming every joint in their body together. Just to put it into perspective a mile is 5280 feet. The average stride is 3 feet that equals,1760 foot falls per mile. That equals 46,112 times in a marathon that a runner would be jolted by a something 3 times bigger than himself. That would be like a 250 lb defensive line man running into a 750 lb offensive line man 46,112 times in a 2 to 6 hour period. Not to mention that is a constant 2 to 6 hours. No breaks!

Also, I bet that most marathoners would be able to go out and play a pick up game of baseball, football, soccer, tennis, etc. They may not be the best out there but I'm sure most could finish a pick up game. Now lets take a guess at how many footballers, soccer players, baseball players, tennis players, etc. could just go out and run a pick up marathon. My guess would be not many if any!

Oh and I'd like to add...I can run further than Keith Bulluck!:ha:

Bryan Clay. Currently at least, I wouldn't say he is greatest ever by any means but there's a reason decathlon winner is generally considered greatest athlete...

    Great post.

And the thing that makes Gebrselaisse so great is that he started out as a 1500m runner. He has run the 1500 in 3m:31s (a time that also would have netted him gold in the Beijing Olympics in this event) and he has been at the top of his sport for 15 years.

I give props to Gebrselaisse as he is undoubtedly incredible in his event. And to maintain world class performance for so long is incredible.

I just think there is discrepency over what the term "athletic" or "athlete" really means. When I ran long distance (I wasn't very good at it) as I've always been a 200m/400m/Javelin man. I didn't 'feel' athletic running distances, but I felt like it takes a huge amount of mental and physical effort and is incredibly hard to do well.

But I consider athletic to also include hand-eye coordination, situational awareness, aptitude for lots of different activities, etc. and runners/marathoners don't require a ton of those skillsets.

Runners and sprinters are both the ultimate specialists, whereas I think the ultimate athlete has to be a generalist.

It sounds to me like sitting on the couch at home produces much less stress on the body. Therefore, it's better for you. Which is why I am a marathon sitter.

Anyone can bench press. I'd say 99% of the people here have the ability to bench press.

99% of the people here couldn't run the distance he ran in ANY time, let alone getting close to how he did it.
