Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky

Haynesworth

Just spoke with our John Clayton who's reporting there is reason for optimism that the Titans could come to an agreement with defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth before the start of free agency on Feb. 27.

Writes Clayton:

Last week, both sides exchanged ideas and the Titans didn't rule out paying Haynesworth's potential $12 million plus a year price considerations. Because he's considered the best impact defensive tackle on the free agent market and could be paid in line with a top defensive end such as Jared Allen. It would be Haynesworth's preference to work out a deal with the Titans, the team that drafted him into the league.

Haynesworth has said all along he'd like to stay and the team has said all along it wants to keep him.
Price was going to be the obstacle and still likely is. But that Allen's name came up and that the idea of paying the tackle something in line with the Kansas City defensive end didn't prompt the Titans to scoff is cause for a bit of relief for Titans faithful.

That doesn't guarantee anything gets done, but it's better than the silence that preceded it.

The Titans should move quickly -- the nearer Haynesworth gets to free agency on Feb. 27, the more tempting it will be for him to dip his toe in the pool. At least one team desperate for a splashy acquisition and a difference maker on defense will be willing to throw crazy money at him, and once that offer arrives the Titans will have lost their chance.

If Tennessee has an opportunity to lock him up, it should pounce.

we've got a shot at bringing back all 11 starters from the second best defense in the league last year, we better do it.

If we do it, I think we're selling out for a one year run next year, then the team really blows up, with KVB and Bulluck up for free agency.

With over 30 million in cap room this offseason, why do you think signing AH automatically means: CAP HELL, OH NOES, TEAM PURGE!?!

Even at 12 million cost per season, that leaves us 18 million to work with. And KVB, Bulluck could receive extended deals next offseason pushing their cap hit back.

Plus 2010, as it stands now, is an uncapped year.

But has Albert ever finished a season. If he gets a big contract do you think he will try harder? I just think it's a big risk. We will have a lot of money sitting on the bench next year.

Well, at least we will have tried something. Better than the money siting in Bud's office.

I agree. I'm a big fan of the University of Tennessees Haynesworth, but that is too much money. Let some other team break their bank signing him. I understand that we have cap space, but at what expense did it cost us? We had to let our core players go to another team to have this cap space. We can not afford to repeat that same process.
If they do sign him, hopefully they will cover themselves by making sure Albert shows up to camp as Albert and not Fat Albert as he did his first couple years. Has he ever finished an entire season? His work ethics got better with a big contract looming in the future. What will he do once he gets the money?

Not when it could have been spent better. We need to cut the dead weight off this team and take a chance on some other people.

But if it were my decesion to make I would try to keep him too. It's kind of like an x-girlfriend. You don't want her but you don't want anybody else to either.
