I was trying to decide whether to put this here, or in other sports, so feel free to move it if you disapprove, mods.

Last summer I bought a very cheap used driver, two irons, and a wedge. Total, I'm pretty sure I spent less than $120. I went to the driving range with a buddy of mine a few times, and enjoyed it enough that I think I'd like to get an actual set. I'm well aware that I will be a terrible golfer, and may never get to the finer points of the game. However, I want a basic set so that if one of my friends who actually plays golf invites me to go along, I can show up with a set of clubs and not embarass my friend. Any suggestions on where to find a good deal on a basic set, or things for me to weigh as I look at sets? I've been out to the giant golf place in cool springs, and to dicks sporting goods, but I know NOTHING about the brands, so I don't know what's reliable, and what looks like kiddie plastic to actual golfers. I'm not looking to drop $600, because I don't think it would be worth it for me. If I really enjoy golf that much, I'll get a really good set in 4-5 years, once I see that I'm actually going to do it, and learn enough to get clubs that suit me the next time around. Whatever I get, I'm going to have to get them lengthened because I'm tall. I THINK that what I want is an all inclusive set, but I'm not really settled on anything at this point. How much do I need to spend to get decent quality? What's important?

    I welcome any advice, thanks.

What I'd do is go to that massive golf store in Cool Springs and swing some. They have a place in the back for you to hack around with. Find what you like and then get on Craig's List to find something similar in the same brand but much cheaper.

Depending on just how much you're wanting to spend, I get amazing deals on top brand clubs.
And I've got a guy that customizes them for a small price too, if need be.

Are you new to golf? It's been forever since I've played, but my uncle who happens to be a golf god has recently been suggesting people to start golfing left-handed if they're new. At least driving left-handed.

I think the concept is that a right-hander's swing is controlled by the person's left side, so if that person were to play left-handed then their swing would be controlled their naturally dominant side. I believe Phil Mickelson is actually right-handed.

I agree with TitanJeff's idea, by the way, on how to find a great deal. I did have a good set of Armour irons that hit beautifully for sale for $50, but I found a buyer about a month ago.

Well if anything it would improve my golf swing. I'm horrible either way.

I've looked around in the giant stores. My problem is that I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I'm looking for recommendations on things to look for in a quality set of clubs. Obviously, not top end, but things that distinguish a decent set of clubs from a cheap set of clubs.

Go check Target. They have some nice sets for pretty decent prices.

Hmmm... Maybe I'll try a different approach to this...

Here are three sets that I'm considering, any thoughts on why one would be better than the others?

I'm not familiar with the brands, or why having 2 woods and 2 hybrids might be more useful than having 1 wood and 3 hybrids. One of my friends said that as a new golfer, I'll get more use out of hybrids because they are easier to use. Is there some other factor in considering these? Is there significant value for me (as a terrible golfer) if I spend another hundred dollars?

I'd buy used, but with the little knowledge that I have, I'd have very little criteria to work with in choosing a set. I don't really even have a swing yet, so I'm not looking for anything in particular. I want a decent basic set that I can use while I learn the game and develop my swing.

If you don't have a swing, then I would invest my first chunk of money on hiring an instructor. They often have clubs you can borrow for lessons. Or borrow a friends. That will go a long way towards giving you an ideas of what you may need.

Right now, you may as well buy the cheapest thing you can off of Craig's List or borrow a set.
