I'd stay away from those you have listed. You can get more for your money. Try finding a good set of forgiving irons (not blades). You should be able to get decent deals on brands like Taylor Made, Adams, Ben Hogan, maybe even Callaway. I found my first irons at Sam's for $199. They were Lynx and I didn't need to upgrade for several years (don't think they make these anymore). You want to invest more in your irons, because you will keep these longer.

You'll find that drivers and woods are the clubs that you will change the most, so buy these used. To begin, you only need a driver and a 3-wood. Look on Craigslist, at pro-shops, and smaller golf stores for good deals on used clubs. Or, if you are planning on being in Myrtle Beach anytime soon, Martin's is a great place to find good used clubs.

Yeah. Basically. He says that since your power comes from your stronger arm/side of your body, you're limiting yourself on drives if you swing right handed because you're actually swinging LEFT handed.
To me, it'd probably be too hard to get used to. Due to playing baseball half my life and golf for 3 years swinging traditionally.
Baseball kills your golf swing anyway.

TGW.com has the best prices for quality gear.

The Tiger Shark set for 300 is getting pretty good reviews.
As is the TopFlight set you had linked above.

If anyone is interested, I can get a set of Callaway X-22 irons for $500. And Callaway Big Bertha (2008) i-Brid set of irons for 530. Just about anything for 40% off what you'll find in any store.

(if that's against forum rules, just erase it or let me know)

I agree with Tuckfro that you should definitely avoid blade irons and go with cavity backs. I disagree though about only needing a driver and 3-wood, as I would not be comfortable without having a 5-wood in my bag. As far as hybrids go, I would say anytime that you can get hybrids in place of your 3, 4, and possibly 5 irons you want to do that, as well.

I'll have to check the inventory on woods. It was a pretty thin selection not too long ago, but typically we get just about everything. Almost makes me want to golf again just to show off the sets and acquire a few buyers. I'm not a good salesman though. Could mark them up a lot, but usually just take a 50 dollar profit on single clubs and 100 on sets. Sounds good, but I could easily up that a lot like the stores do.

I know we've got Ping G 10s. I'll have to dig a bit to find out what else there is.

I'm not saying he won't need a 5 wood eventually, just not starting off. He can always pick up a new or used 5 for very little money once he gets his swing and distance down.

As for hybrids, I can't stand them. Feels like the orthopedic shoes of golf clubs. The guy who taught me the game drilled it into my head that "it's not the club, it's the guy swinging them." So, I guess I have an aversion to gimmicky clubs because of that. However, some people do really like hybrids.

My understanding was that hybrids are easier to use, and since I have no formal training, I'm looking for easy.

I have no desire to be a great golfer. I have a large desire to be able to go golfing with my buddies and have an acceptable set of clubs, and to be able to play with them without embarassing them or slowing them down. I'm not all about the sport. I'm all about my friends, the outdoors, and daytime drinking.

To each their own, but I find the hybrids to be borderline amazing. My 3 and 4 irons were easily the weakest clubs in my bag, but since I switched to hybrids they are almost like my scoring clubs. I wouldn't have believed the difference until I tried it.
