HPD has a bit of a different cult following than some of the other Clint westerns because of the ambiguity of the revenge angle being played out in the flick. Some folks call it a ghost story. Leone's westerns are straight up masterpieces though..

We can't underestimate the star power of Eastwood perhaps the most universally popular actor of all time who has ben making films for 40+ years. I think clint is the reason more people like "the good the bad and the ugly" more than "once upon a time in the west" because Eastwood obviously was not in that later film.

When leone did his first western "Fistful of dollars" he wanted Henry Fonda in the man with no name role and charles Bronson in the Ramone role but he couldn't afford them seeing that he only had a budget of $250,000 for the film. Of course both are the stars of Once upon a time in america and awesome in it.

Did you notice how Eastwood's role diminishes a bit in each Leone film he did? In fistful he was the central character. In "A few dollars more" he shares the main stage with Lee Van Cleef and in GBU he is one of three main characters with Eli wallach and Lee Van Cleef and is really upstaged by Wallach tuco charater.

Clint's first few westerns post Leone were inferior to what Leone was doing hang em high and 2 mules for sister sarah. WTF? But he made some great westerns after that and HPD and "Unforgiven" are classic.
