Titans Routed in Big D 30-10

SUMMARY: Both the Tennessee Titans starting offense and defense sputtered on the way to a 30-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Titans were only able to generate 78 yards of offense while the Cowboys had 249 yards. "Overall it was not one of our better efforts," Coach Jeff Fisher said. "We need to do a better job offensively. We couldn't get a first down. … We didn't do some things we are capable of doing." The highlights for the Titans was a 17-yard TD from Kerry Collins to Justin Gage and the play of rookie Javon Ringer. Ringer rushed five times for 33 yards and had a 17-yard touchdown run nullified by a penalty. He showed good hands as a receiver, catching two passes, including a one-handed grab. He also proved to be a force on special teams, averaging 34 yards on two kickoff returns.

Losing and winning doesn't matter in the preseason. Anyone remember the preseason game against the Pats in '07? Scoreboard said we won, but I didn't feel like we did. That's the only game I feel like that about in recent memory. We got beat up even worse than this by Atlanta in our third preseason game last year. We looked bad? THIS is what preseason is for. To give every team chance to get in tune. All you can take from preseason is player performance, and even that can change over the course of four or five games.

The cowboys weren't going to look bad in their new stadium, especially after being owned by Oakland a week before.

IMO the 07' Pats pre-season game we showed that both our lines could battle with anyone. They roughed our QB and we roughed up and intercepted their QB! We proved that we could play with anyone but we also showed that our offense was missing explosive players and we needed a bigger threat at RB. If I remember correctly, Lendale didn't play in that game and we had Chris Henry starting at tailback. But we battled in that game.

Now beforehand this Cowboys game had the makings of the same kind of game. Unfortunately I didn't leave this game with the same kind of feeling. I left it feeling that:
    1. We really missed big Stewart at tackle.
    2. That Lendale and Ringer will need to play a big role this year!
    3. We will not get pressure on the elite teams with 4 down linemen.
    4. That without Haynesworth in the lineup, we will be run on and we will not scare good offensive teams.
    5. Our young DB's will need to grow up quick.
    6. We will need to find a way to get off the field on 3rd downs.
    7. We still do not have a Punt returner. We must find one in these last 2 Pre Season games.

We are who I thought we were! Alot of people believed we wouldn't miss a beat losing Haynesworth. I tend to believe that we will not be as strong defensively against the Better Olines. No one demands a double team so teams will handle our DL with their 5. We will have to send LB's and stunt all while exposing our secondary. This will force us to try and score more points on Offense.

We're still not equipped to win shootouts and we will have to find our running game in the interim. The focus will again be on our OL and our QB and WR's will be called upon to make more plays. These next two games will not give us the same test we faced on Friday. But they will give us time to get back to the basics of running the football and winning on 3rd down on both sides of the ball.

Undoubtedly, the most important factor in last night's game was the fact that the Cowboys had game-planned. Whereas, the Titans simply lined up. Jerry and Wade were making certain to have an impressive stadium debut. Also, because it was the inaugural game for that stadium, the 'boys had emotional momentum on their side. Despite these facts, our starting defense held them to one TD. Our offense was sluggish, and disappointing, yes. But, I tend to agree with Fisher, and some of the other posters here: it's not really a concern unless it continues into the regular season. Don't read too much into what is primarily an evaluative process>:\

FanSince.. If that sh*t carries into the regular season then this season will be a complete waste of talent. Fisher needs to get it fixed yesterday, if it carries over it's too late.

For veteran solidified starters, nothing carries over except for injuries.

we will be fine, playing in the new stadium was like a field trip for the titans. they were there to see the place and be part of the night more than playing to win.

    Cowboys fan here.

I've read the entire thread up to and after gameday and I just want to set some things straight.

    1. Our HD screen meets league requirements. Either the NFL needs to raise those requirements or punters need to try not to hit it. *wink*

    2. The Cowboys did no more gameplanning for this game than the Titans did. Of course we wanted to win it, why wouldn't we?

    3. Very concerned about the lack of credit from the Titan fan base.

    Have a nice day.

Fannypack, I think the Titans and the Cowboys had different approaches to the game. First, you guys did look good, there is no doubt about that. Lots of screens and Witten looks tough. I just think you guys coaches felt they HAD to win this game, where the Titans would like to have won it, but more so wanted to evaluate the talent on our roster. In doing this, our team presented a more VANILLA scheme than your team who, again, was probably pressured by ownership to look good in your Stadium opener. You guys have potential to be a good team, but I think it would be a different game had this been regualr season.
